[attr="class","smdbody"] to say she was tired would make for a severe understatement. both her body and mind had been put under an immense amount of strain these past few months due to her own intense desire to improve upon herself. she was preparing for the gyms - for LORE - and for the family whom refused to acknowledge her. ash envied her brother for the ease in which he lived, for he had very little to concern himself with in comparison.
'but i have a purpose.'
she had the potential to become great - but the road ahead wasn't an easy one. ash had fought for what she had earned thus far, and had gained a respectable team as a result. but they were only that; respectable. both the girl and her team had to become much more if they were to aid in conquering and potentially dismantling the league. the pokemon currently within her possession would be tested both mentally and physically as soon as she began to take the steps necessary to challenge the league.
'just gotta figure out where i'll start.'
ash anticipated taking on the innumerable obstacles set before her, and some portion of her feared failure, but she refused to be cowed. 'failure' wasn't an option, especially since her future was potentially at risk. the novice didn't want to be considered a 'mediocre' trainer - no - she wanted to be one of the best of her generation.
"heh."
'easier said than done.'
the girl adjusted the straps of her back as she continued to march up hill, the muscles in her legs beginning to feel the burn as she pushed onward with an admittedly worried expression upon her face.
'but i gotta do what i gotta do.'

[attr="class","smdbody"] the rapidash made for a welcomed distracted from her own poisonous thoughts. she had crossed paths with it, and it had immediately leveled her with a pointed glare. its nostrils would flare and the flames of its mane would increase in size, the powerful creature standing within her path and planting itself there.
'does it expect me to turn around?'
ash met its gaze, her lips twisting into a tight frown as they both eyed one another with apparent disapproval.
"let me pass."
the fire-type merely pawed at the ground, snorted and tossed its head.
'of course.'
she gritted her teeth in mild frustration.
"fine," she spat. "i'm really not in the mood but what the fuck ever, right?"
ash wrenched bishop's capsule from her belt and gave it a toss. the hefty pokemon, once released, would eye the much taller rapidash. his expression was one of absolute calm, which sharply contrasted with his mistress's look of agitation as she continued to glare at the fire-type.
"let's get this over with, bishop. it won't move so we'll just make it."
the rapidash bowed its head, presenting the pointed tip of its horn as it began to glow an ominous shade of purple.
"defense curl!"
bishop furled tightly into a nearly impenetrable ball as his foe rushed forward and rammed into the ground-type with 'poison jab'. the damage inflicted was minimal, and the poison that secreted from the rapidash managed not to adversely effect the donphan.
"rollout!"
taking advantage of their close proximity and his own previously curled form, bishop harshly slammed into the equine by use of 'rollout'. it was forced back, but managed to remain balanced upon its hooves before it spat out a gout of flame that encircled the donphan entirely.
'that's 'fire spin'.'
ash squinted her eyes before shouting an order.
"double edge!"
despite the flames that had licked at his tough hide, bishop would obediently lunge forward, his form remaining tightly curled as he did so. he left a trail of yellow energy in his wake as he roughly impacted the rapidash's lean form. it reeled, releasing a whinny that pierced the air and caused ash to wince.
"finish it with 'bulldoze'!"
the earth trembled and rippled, but to ash's surprise, the power behind it bypassed what was to be expected. a tidal wave of energy surged forward, overwhelming the fire-type the moment it struck. its legs would fail to support it as its consciousness slipped away, and it would collapse before them with a harsh exhale.
"ah..."
the woman blinked dumbly.
"that was..."
her face split into a grin, her mood having improved as a realization struck her suddenly.
'that was 'earthquake'!'
"definitely a far cry from what ya were."
the girl felt only pride, reminded of bishop when he was little more than a phanpy. he had grown considerably since then, and would likely continue to develop into an even greater battler.

[attr="class","smdbody"] ash passed the rapidash by after returning her donphan to his capsule, glancing at the limp form of the equine as she did so. it had put up a half-decent fight, but bishop had proven himself capable of withstanding its powerful strikes and dishing out just as much damage. after the ground-type's victory, her formerly sour mood had become a thing of the past, the young woman now sporting a small smile as she continued on her way.
'he actually learned 'earthquake'.'
there was even a small hop in her step, the woman's grin broadening out as she considered how they could utilize such a move in future battles.
'i really wanna test it out more.'
unfortunately for her, there were no suitable targets in sight. she wouldn't encounter another pokemon for nearly an hour as she walked, but she entertained herself with her own thoughts. it wasn't unusual for her to get lost within the vast confines of her mind, a plethora of potential strategies and rough ideas for training exercises occupying the interior of her skull. her train of thought would eventually be interrupted, brought to a gradual halt as a seated figure entered her line of sight.
"what's that?"
she struggled to properly identify whatever it was at first, and strained her vision somewhat before realizing it was indeed a pokemon.
"ah..."
'that's definitely a magmar.'
ash halted a considerable distance from it, hesitating as she struggled to gauge the possibility of it being aggressive.
'it looks kinda strong.'
there were scars that were etched across its frame, the markings offering an ample amount of evidence regarding its history. intrigued, the girl tentatively stepped closer to get a better look, but was unable to escape the magmar's notice.
"shit," she hissed, flinching back.
the fire-type stood and faced her, its expression undecipherable as it peered at ash through partially lidded eyes. the fighter stared back and held her breath, frozen in place but unwilling to lower her own gaze.
"you're," she breathed. "you're what i'm lookin' for, i think."
this was, without a doubt, a wonderful specimen. everything about it oozed with power - oozed with potential - oozed with experience.
"i'm gonna make you mine."
ash would release her donphan at that moment, and the battle would commence with bishop taking a step forward to close the distance between himself and his foe. the fire-type was remarkably unperturbed by the sight of the elephant, merely releasing a puff of hot flame as it raised a hand to the sky and shot a beam of power toward it.
"what's it doing?"
as soon as the question was presented, it became hot. it wasn't the usual kinda hot, either. it felt as though the sun itself was focusing its rays down upon them, and the breathable air grew astonishingly dry. the already warm weather became borderline intolerable, with both ash and donphan struggling underneath the intensity of it.
"holy shit it's... urgh."
a groan of discomfort escaped her, and she would blink in the direction of the one responsible.
"mag," the fire-type purred, a smirk forming upon her beak.
"bishop, just - just deal with it the best you can and let's get started already."
ash thrust a finger toward the magmar.
"use 'earthquake!'"
it was spectacular to be granted the opportunity to see the move be made use of so soon. the earth would quiver fiercely underneath their feet, and the magmar would stumble, brought to one knee as a pained grimace crossed its features. but such a look would be wiped away as it quickly returned to it feet and exuded a bewildering aura. it was 'confuse ray', the attack causing her donphan to blink dumbly as his mind suddenly grew befuddled. the wild 'mon would grin smugly immediately after, satisfied that its energy-based move had proven successful on the first try as bishop stumbled and released a rumbling moan of discomfort.
"bishop?"
ash had been exposed to such a move only a handful of times beforehand, but she was somewhat familiar with how it worked. and as her donphan tripped over himself, she could do little more than helplessly watch on as the magmar spat out a 'flamethrower', the power of the move made severe as the 'sunny day' bolstered its power.
'not good. not good.'
the 'confuse ray's' averse effects lasted for what felt like an eternity, with the magmar managing to easily dodge the slow and stumbling ground-type as he attempted to obey his mistress's verbal commands. and even when his mind had finally cleared, he still struggled against his foe.
"try 'earthquake' again, boy!"
the fire-type found a 'work around' around the attack, carefully re-positioning itself and making use of its surroundings to minimize the damage inflicted by the strike as much as possible. the outcropping of rocks that covered the route proved useful to the 'mon, whom shot both the brunette and her donphan an infuriatingly smug smile as it executed dodge or softened the blow of bishop's attacks. it wasn't long before ash's pokemon was whittled down to next to nothing, panting harshly and sporting a freshly applied 'burn' as he fell to one knee.
"return, bishop!"
it was a hard decision to return the pokemon, but she felt as though she had little choice in the matter. she feared he was far too slow to properly handle the magmar, and he was already so tired and severely weakened by both this battle and the last that she doubted he'd be able to somehow come out on top.
"alright."
'think. think. think.'
the girl reviewed her choices, and was thankful - and somewhat annoyed - that the arrogant fire-type was willing to wait for the brunette to select another companion.
"courier, get out here!"
her massive bird would appear before her, his gaze settling upon the magmar as he peered past his prominent crest. he then flapped his mighty wings moments later, maintaining a hover several meters abive the dry earth of route forty-five.
"use 'close combat'!"
it felt as though barely a second had come and gone before her staraptor was before the fire-type, delivering blow after blow upon its form. the duck-faced creature would manage to deftly dodge a few strikes - but not all of them. at the attack's end, it would release a 'smokescreen' in her pokemon's face, causing the bird to grimace in disgust as he moved to distance himself somewhat.
"use 'whirlwind' to clear it!"
with several harsh flaps of his wings, courier easily accomplished such a task, and the magmar would eye the bird with a hint of uncertainty that creased at its distinctive features.
"you should be faster than it," ash said. "and we're going to take advantage of that. flank it and use 'take down'"
courier obeyed his mistress as he moved in on his enemy's flank.
"mag!"
before he could land a hit, the magmar released a 'flamethrower', the hot flame threatening to cause a significant amount of harm.
"use 'agility' to dodge it! go skyward!"
with their previous plan quickly discarded in favor of escaping the fire-type's potent attack, courier flew high and out of reach, and the magmar would huff in frustration as he just barely slipped out of range.
"alright!" ash shouted. "'brave bird'!"
courier descended, his wings tucked closely to his form while he dove like a missile toward his target. he left a trail of shimmering blue in his wake - and was absolutely covered by the time he slammed into his foe. but despite his success, the magmar wasn't done, no - it hung on.
"you're so fucking stubborn."
the wild pokemon panted harshly in reply, its form trembling violently as it struggled to remain upright. the 'sunny day' was beginning to fade, the intense heat that formerly saturated the air in a thick blanket growing mild and far more tolerable with each passing moment.
"we're finishing this. courier, 'take down'."
the 'take down' would be met by a 'flamethrower'. though its power had been weakened due to its creator's present state. courier endured the attack, but the magmar was unable to endure his. it finally fell to its knees, and then slammed its clawed hands into the ground in an attempt to not completely fall before the girl and her flying-type.
'let's see if that was enough.'
ash produced an empty 'great ball' before tossing it at the magmar, whom would be sucked inside moments later, the capsule rocking fiercely back and forth as the pokemon within valiantly struggled against its capture.
