He was in close enough proximity to catch sight of the hair standing along the back of the man's neck, and the minor detail offered the scientist a sort of solace. His expression held stern despite the fact, the cautious movement of his hand near his stomach unmet with a kindly gesture in return. His hand lingered decidedly in his pocket, and its opposite never left his side. The offer was denied.[break][break]
The turn brief turn of his eyes and the attempted drop of respect granted his tone were read as reluctant submission. Despite the man's best efforts, Sloane appeared to be unconvinced.[break][break]
His heel found its way back as he allowed for some possible wave of relief to wash over Gray, easing himself a small step back. Sloane's steely gaze had softened, but it remained alert as he continued to fix the grunt with an unwavering, analytic stare. He hadn't answered either of his questions, but with the scientist breathing down his throat, perhaps he found it difficult to speak.[break][break]
Sloane humored him in his own mind as he turned to start back down the trail, silence hanging heavy in the air between them before he spoke up again.[break][break]
❝ I didn't hear the magic word, Grayson, ❞ he chided humorlessly, hand slipping out from his pocket to check the face of his watch as it vibrate against his wrist with an unread text.[break][break]
❝ I'm going to ask again. ❞ The weight of his tone lifted a bit, though it still carried a serious edge. He was expecting an answer. ❝ Do you know why you're here? ❞[break][break]
His finger pressed to the side of his watch, keyboard spanning to life from its surface in a gentle glow.[break][break]
❝ Do you know who I am? ❞ he questioned further, fingers tapping rapidly at the holographic keys hovering in the air. What he may be typing and who it may be to would be difficult to discern from Gray's position.[break][break]
He expected his name to ring a bell.

He'd delivered the line as calmly as he could. He tried to start over. But he was still giving him the run around, and it was starting to piss him off. There wasn't much more that upset Gray than people like Egan who refused to act reasonably. And he was about done taking that from him.[break][break] When Egan began to walk, Gray fell into stride with him. He was finding it a bit difficult to control his emotions around this guy, and he was getting tired of trying. He tried keeping it light, he tried playing nice, and he still wasn't getting anywhere. If anything, Sloane was making Gray's opinion of him worse every time he opened his mouth. Not that he cared, as far as Gray could tell. He damn near bit his tongue to stop from snapping back.[break][break] "Enlighten me," he said simply. Any more and he might have come off as offensive again, and if he went down that path he wasn't sure there was a way back. Not with his temper and not from the looks of Egan and the way he presented himself, either. He watched with his peripheral vision as Egan's wrist began to glow. Probably playing with some sort of technology. Maybe his suit was more advanced than Gray's. Maybe that's why he needed the escort. The shift in his demeanor came in a rush upon the answer. His steps fell quietly to a stop as they reached the gate standing between them and the next route, having reached the end of the first leg of their trip. The squared shoulders of his suit dropped slightly, the tightness of his expression narrowing his eyes easing away as his brows rest gentle over his gaze. He shifted in his place, the sandy path shifting softly under his foot as he met Gray's gaze once again. Disappointment reflected distant in his eyes. It wasn't for the man he was gazing upon.[break][break]
❝ You'll have to wait, ❞ he informed calmly, tension having melting from his tone. His voice was somber and clear. It wasn't the place nor the time to be sharing Virus' secrets, and, as aggravating as the situation was, he had little desire to spin threats or flaunt his position. If the grunt truly wanted to know he would have to take the time to try and piece the situation together himself. Sloane had dropped enough hints by now - advanced technology, access to the team's database, the fact that he needed an escort at all should have been some clue. Gray would be receiving precious little in addtion.[break][break]
His hand reached to settle its fingers about the handle to the door of the waystation, eyes dropping to watch as he twisted the knob to open the door a short ways. Golden eyes rose to rest back on Grayson as he took a step back, drawing the door open to allow the young man to go in ahead of him. The humble gesture looked to be an honest one, hand still tucked in his pocket as he waited patiently for his escort to proceed. [break][break]
❝ What I can tell you, ❞ he began, unafraid of his words being heard by the attendant inside manning the counter. ❝ Is that part of the reason for your being here is to serve as a reminder. ❞[break][break]
