Roy Case wasn't yet satisfied. His last subterranean investigation hadn't yielded any answers, but he hoped that Union Cave would prove to be a bit more insightful. A large earthquake had brought down the power of his home in Kogane, and he was still determined to find some culprits, or figure out a way to fix it. Searching the tower and scouring the city hadn't provided any answers for him.
Simply looking underground might not be the most exact science, but Roy didn't have much else in the way of leads. His thought process, as simple as it sounded, was that looking underground might teach him about the tremors brought on by the fall of Madatsubomi Tower. He'd entered the cave around mid-morning, and hours later he hadn't learned much besides the fact that caves are really boring. Even the few pokémon he'd encountered hadn't been very entertaining for the gangster.
Roy wanted answers, he knew that was true, but he began to think as to whether or not he was just wasting time. The Crew back in Kogane had rejected him pretty soundly. Roy didn't think he was running away from their disapproval, but he wasn't exactly embracing them at every turn either.
He struggled to get all deep and introspective, simply endeavoring to stay on path as he traveled the length of the cave. Roy had received a clear map from some talkative hikers above ground, but now he was sure he made the wrong turn. Before him was supposed to be a clear path through the Union Cave, but instead a wall of earth had fallen to the cave floor, completely impeding his progress forward. The map hadn't led him wrong yet... "What the heck's going on here?!" Roy shouted in frustration, crumpling the map and hawking it at the wall of rock.

"GYAH!" Roy Case inadvertently shouted at the strange, spooky man that had approached him. His figure was huge, and for some reason Roy thought he saw demon's horns on his head. "Oh gosh," the criminal complained, "I haven't died yet, have I?" The trainer leaned against the cave-in behind his back. "Am I under these boulders right now? Are you the devil meant to take me away from this world? I wasn't that bad was I?"
Quickly after his mortal complaints, Roy took note of two identical pokémon approaching the two trainers. "Here, look!" Roy exclaimed, stepping towards the edge of the flaffy's light and readying a pokéball. "What if I take out these pests? Then you don't have to smite me!" And, before waiting for an answer, Roy would summon his drilbur with a burst of light, and the serious pokémon quickly took note of the two arons. "Onslaught, overpower!" Roy shouted, and with his alliterative announcement, his drilbur took position between the trainer and the male aron.
"Don't hold anything back!" the trainer would command, "Use your killer move, Earthquake!" Drilbur's claws would pierce the cave floor and a sudden rumbling would take hold of the surrounding area. The move would almost definitely affect all surrounding pokémon and cave structures. Although the attack would severely hurt the wild pokémon, he would recover just barely, using his Sturday to withstand the strike. The aron would flip over from his back and prepare to retaliate, charging towards Onslaught with his head lowered, and colliding with Roy's partner to emit a terrible metallic sound.
The Iron Head dazed Onslaught for a moment, but Roy didn't feel he needed to dwell on the damage taken. "Rapid Spin, partner! See if you can't finish off this pest in the name of this Lord of Darkness we've got here!" Onslaught didn't really understand the second part of what Roy was on about, but he fully understood the attack command and happily disregarded the rest. Spinning claws dug through the wild aron, and the Steel pokémon was thrown into the darkness of the cave, unconscious and dazed.
"Way to go, buddy!" Roy declared happily. Oblivious to the crumbling cave-in behind him, Roy would then address the demon he thought had arrived. "So, do demons have names?" the trainer would ask. He thought perhaps if he could socialize with the creature, then maybe he could avoid some eternal damnation. "Because mine is Roy Case, rising criminal star of Kogane. It's a pleasure, your unholiness."

"devil... what in arceus' name?" he scoffed underneath his breath. however, the weight on his head became more apparent, and he sighed in realization.[break][break] however, they were cut short by the sudden emergence of conflict.[break][break] "wait, earthquake? are ya insane?!" cooper struggled to maintain his footing as he recalled his flaaffy.[break][break] the cave was cast in a darker hue before being illuminated by a flash of red as cooper's trapinch poured onto the path. cooper sighed in relief once the quaking stopped. so far, so good—and he decided to participate, in case the other decided to ravage the earth again.[break][break] "dig— but a little careful now!"[break][break] the trapinch dutifully complied. a mound of dirt grew on the cave floor as the orange ant lion disappeared into the cave's underground. as their counterparts fought, his trapinch trailblazed through sediment before unearthing himself in a critical strike on the aron's stomach.[break][break] the aron shrieked—but not to the same effect as the other's metal sound. thank the lord. hallejuah. cooper was worried he'd be diagnosed by the early onset of tinnitus after this.[break][break] the aron scuttled on to all fours. she hardened her steel carapace seemed menacing enough—but trapinch had the type advantage. cooper ordered his minion to dig once more, and after the trapinch excavated a path to the nine hells, the aron was quickly condemned to its torturous fate: back in to the darkness from which it came.[break][break] cooper wiped some sweat off his face. the earthquake had boiled his skin red, but everything was okay. everything was fine, besides the crumbling cave-in that had existed prior.[break][break] "So, do demons have names?" [break][break] he decided to play along.[break][break] "well, y'see. yer talkin' to the biggest demon of 'em all. i'm asmodeus, lord of the ninth circle." cooper chuckled, broad chest expanding wide to fill his royal demon lungs. "rising criminal star, hm? tell me, then. what has been yer worst sin?"[break][break] perhaps, other pokemon were around for the infernal confessional.[break][break] word count: 420[break]

Roy's blood ran cold. He had never heard of 'Asmodeus' or the 'ninth circle,' but it all sounded perfectly terrifying to him. It seemed a bit strange to Roy that demons fought with pokémon, but it seemed even denizens of the dark needed pastimes. "My worst sin?" Roy responded to the question, "Well... I guess there was that time I spied on this meeting of these other criminals. Or... there was that time me and the other youngbloods ate from stuff that might have been stolen for us... ah I guess it might be when my pokémon and protected some graffiti artists, but then I stopped them from vandalizing after they did it once."
As Roy thought more deeply about his confession, he was startled at how small the list of crimes he'd committed actually might be. "But, I'm definitely a criminal! I've been a criminal ever since I was taken from Tanba City!" Suddenly, the argument had become that Roy definitely deserved a ticket to the ninth circle after being crushed by boulders. As he thought about this turn of events, even more pokémon seemed to encroach on their position. A massive serpent of earth approached with fury in his eyes. Apparently, Onslaught's Earthquake hadn't earned the pokémon or his trainer very many fans.
"Don't worry, your unholiness," Roy assured the horned devil. "I can take the big one, if it would please you. Onslaught, overpower!" Roy's drilbur took center stage once more with an excited cry. "Try Rapid Spin again!" Onslaught's drills spun against the onix's hard exterior, but the attack was blown away by the wild creature's Tackle. The attack threw drilbur against the wall of rocks that interrupted the tunnel. "Hey! My body is under there! Be careful!" Once Onslaught had recovered, they watched the onix's body shine and sharpen with a Rock Polish. "Hone Claws, let's try to keep up, partner!"
The onix's enhanced speed let him interrupt Onslaught's move, and another Tackle threw him against another wall of Union Cave. Onslaught dutifully stood back up from the attack, breathing heavy, but standing strong. "Mud Slap then!" Roy's partner dug a wave of soft earth that undercut the onix's movements and brought the towering pokémon to the floor of the cave once more causing a widespread tremor.
"Please accept this creature as your sacrifice, Asmodeus!" Roy bowed his head. Onslaught was terribly confused, but begrudgingly complied when Roy clutched his small head and forced him to bow as well. "May we avoid a spot in an afterlife that will be far too hot, my unholiness." Roy didn't have automatic respect for a lot of things, but, he held a lot of belief in myths and legends, and he wasn't about to treat this ninth circle demon with disrespect.

If the other had been a more serious fugitive, perhaps he could have wrangled him up like a Tauros and tossed him to the feds for some dough. Alas, his luck had been trampled on Cooper's dirt path, and it was too late to retrace his steps.[break][break] "Taken? Who took ya?" Cooper said, booming his voice in order to properly assume his new infernal character.[break][break] However, they were interrupted by what appeared to be the stony guardians of the cave. Cooper could see it in their eyes, the shapes of their agitated forms and as Roy confidently pursued the larger one, Cooper voiced his approval.[break][break] "Pleasing me is difficult, imp." Cooper said—and he almost blew a raspberry at the end of his line, fighting back chuckles down his throat.[break][break] He cast his ball, but the pokémon that followed did not hit the ground. Atlas, the beldum, floated calmly in the face of the Geodude's flexing rage.[break][break] "Stay calm now," Cooper said, his drawl becoming more pronounced, "and make sure y'keep out of its paws."[break][break] Chirping in a swing of machine-like noises, the beldum complied, dodging a hammer arm that cracked the hardened earth before him. Beldum weaved in and out of the zone of danger, using his compact anatomy to puzzle the awkward rock pokémon. Frustrated, the geodude continued to slam his fists—and the creatures in the dark seemed to become more and more disturbed by it rather than the earthquake from before. Beldum preemptively hardened his body, and as the iron defense took hold, Cooper withheld the order. The geodude rammed the earth with its fists like a spoiled baby demanding a blanket, and while it's hands were caught in the delay of withdrawal, Cooper shouted:[break][break] "Git 'er done!"[break][break] The beldum smashed into the exposed head of the geodude (iron defense) with a stunning bang. Arms limp, eyes closed, the geodude fainted a little after Roy and Onslaught's triumphant conclusion to their battle.[break][break] Cooper patted Roy's head, his broad palm rustling the hairs like a toy. "You've done well, my servant. And I will think about keepin y'from the melting pot." Cooper cast his trapinch out alongside his beldum, and with a nod of his head, he gestured to the cave in. They began to carefully clear the rocks: a slow, but possible maneuver.[break][break] "Yer a funny one. Roy Case let out a deep breath, absently recalling Onslaught from the battlefield. Figuring he was dead anyways, the criminal took a load off, laying against a cave wall, his eyeline somewhere between the boulders burying his corpse and Asmodeus. "Well, my mom maybe might have left me in Tanba or something? I was kind of young. But, some Coldbloods took me to Kogane after they finished some job, and that's been my life ever since."
Even with all the discordant battling, it seemed there'd be a reprieve from the wild pokémon marching through Union Cave. Roy would be investigating the cave-in to see how to get past it if he wasn't already under it. The young man was kind of scared to see what Asmodeus' two pokémon would find under the rocks. He wasn't excited to discover what his body looked like after a flattening.
"And, as for your question, your unholiness, I've always figured there must be some higher... thing... y'know? Well, of course you know you're a demon you sort of are that higher thing, but you get my point!" Roy brought his voice back to a lower volume, careful not to treat this high ranking demon too casually. "I just wanna think that... there's some thing that moves us all, y'know? Maybe it's one of those big, shiny, mythic pokémon. Or maybe it's like destiny or something," Roy had vaguely considered all the concepts he now discussed, but it was a totally different matter to articulate them. "Yeah, that sounds good. I think everyone's got this trajectory, y'know? We've all got our roads, and maybe we're just stuck to sticking to 'em."
The criminal watched more and more boulders fall away from the cave-in while the two pokémon were at work. "I just didn't think mine would lead me to being the fertilizer of some vertical rock garden." Roy's eyes turned to Asmodeus instead, trying to read the demon's reactions. He tried to gauge what humanity was there behind the horns and the accent and the small pokémon.

Cooper never said he was a saint.[break][break] 'Coldbloods' was new. He surmised it was a gang of sorts. Johto was no stranger to ruffians snaking in its underbelly—or toppling towers.[break][break] "So, y'believe in some sorta higher power guidin' us all?" Cooper reiterated, chuckling as his thumb strummed his hairy chin. "But in a way that we can't control, eh? No way to change yer fate? Yer destiny?"[break][break] The thought scared him. The possibility was there—and perhaps, failures and successes meant little in the grand plot of the path.[break][break] "Y'won't die here." Cooper reassured him. "Maybe destiny brought me here ta tell ya that you'll be given a second shot."[break][break] A sizable pile began to form nearby as his pokémon worked. Roy Case's eyes tightened. He was surprised such a high-level demon (since he was from Hell, would it be 'low-level' instead?) was actually interested in Roy's ruminations.
"Well, yeah. That's how I've always been taught it. If you're a criminal, you can't just become something else. That's just how everyone see us. That's probably why you're here to pick me up and poke me with a pitchfork until forever."
Soon after he spoke, light began passing through the cave-in. The demon's two pokémon hadn't uncovered Roy's body, thankfully, but simply created passage from one end of Union Cave to the other. "What do you mean I'm not gonna die, though?" Roy asked. "Isn't that my body under the boulders? Even all my pokémon are just Ghost types now," Roy complained, looking to the team he was so recently battling with.
"Plus, a second shot would just be wasted on me, your unholiness. I was a criminal in life. But, if I went back to life then I'd still be a rogue. Maybe demons get a little more freedom than us people folk. Take you for example, I bet you got plenty of hobbies outside of damning souls and moving rocks!" Roy thought on it more deeply for a moment, he found it really easy to be honest with this demon. Something about death had become a bit freeing. The criminal wasn't just a criminal anymore. Perhaps those boulders were some strokes of good fortune.

Roy Case's eyes squinted and then his brows furrowed. The first was for the sudden burst of light that had come through, and the second was for the demon's rough hand through his already messy hair. Roy couldn't fully grasp what this demon was doing, but he was surprised his head could be touched by the demon. Maybe demons could just touch ghosts? Was that in the rule book? Was there a rule book?
When Asmodeus walked towards the hole in the cave-in, Roy did the same, stopping short of the boulders. "I'm not sure that's just something I can do. Especially since I'm dead, demon guy."
It was at that realization that Roy came to a sudden thought. Even he knew that malicious spirits relished making deals with others. "But, hey. I bet if I came back to life after getting all this good advice, I'd take everything you're saying straight to heart!" Roy knew it was far-fetched, but he had to do something. "Maybe if you bring me back to life- and all my partners back to life too- then I'd be totally in your debt, y'know! I would be super good and nice if that's what you wanted. Or super evil if that's what you needed too!"
Roy Case still hesitated to step over the boulders that had buried his once lively body. "What say you, your unholiness?" Roy Case extended his hand to the demon, his grin wide and inviting.

Roy Case was both terrified and gleeful when Asmodeus agreed to his proposed bargain. Sure, he'd become the servant to some dark master, but Roy would get to be alive while he did it! The criminal was elated to be given this chance at life once more by the very spirit who had arrived to damn him to hell.
He giggled when the design was traced into his palm, shook with terror when Asmodeus' magic spell was cast, and cheered at the top of his lungs when Asmodeus finally granted him back his mortality. Roy breathed. Real oxygen flowed through his lungs! It wasn't just the ghost exygen he'd been breathing moments earlier, but real, true, living oxygen! Roy wanted to dance but simply hollered some more, over the moon with the news.
"Don't you worry, your unholiness," Roy assured the demon, "I won't waste my chance this time around! You're like that angel from that old holiday special, except evil!" The gangster laughed wholeheartedly at nothing in particular. "Man, mister demon, you should try being alive, I really missed it!"
Soon enough, all the yammering caught the attention of a few equally aggressive pokémon somewhere along the cave system. Their cries of reply to the magic spell and the celebration echoed through the cave until it reached Roy and Asmodeus. But, Roy didn't fear whatever terrible sound was coming his way. "Let's see it, you mortal plane! Throw your best shot at Roy Case the reborn!"
