Finding a map becomes out of the question when Jackie begins to notice that they are no longer alone. The Buneary, house-trained and originally meant to be nothing more than a pet, is suddenly aware of the Nidoran nosing through debris along the trail. It sniffs as it pushes sticks and trash aside in an attempt to find something to fill its stomach. As Jackie totters closer, it seems not to notice the clumsy footsteps of a pokemon who has clearly never known life as prey.

Peyton eventually gives up on her search for a map only to find that Jackie is investigating a more important matter. She watches as Jackie looks down at the debris with a look to mild disgust, and then back up at the Nidoran. As she pushes herself up from her place on the trail, she watches as Jackie begins to start tottering back to her trainer when the Nidoran becomes startled. It lashes out, delivering a scratch to Jackie in the process before stepping protectively over its pile of rubbish.

She remembers reading or hearing somewhere that wild pokemon are easily startled, tending to attack when they feel threatened. It would seem that she is being served a chance to learn how these battles operate on a silver platter -- and Peyton is quick to rush to her Buneary's side after throwing her pack back around her shoulders.

"Brush it off, Jackie." Peyton notices the angered look that is tossed over the Buneary's shoulder, but she chooses to dismiss it as she urges the battle to begin. "Use agility, and then follow it up with a dizzy punch." Ideally the move would serve to give Jackie the upper hand, turning the tables back around on the Nidoran in a dizzying flash.

The Buneary zips in a flash to the Nidoran's rear, agility causing her speed to rise just enough to have the edge. A moment later, Jackie's ears come out in a series of dizzying punches meant to disorient the Nidoran. There is no lasting effect, aside from causing the blue creature to stumble over the pile it was protecting so fiercely. In retaliation to the barrage it lashes out again, claws scratching at the Buneary's coat.

"Jump kick." Jackie doesn't outright acknowledge the command, but she obeys by jumping upwards, kicking the Nidoran before landing just behind the creature once again. Disoriented by the movements, the Nidoran lets out a low growl that unsettles Jackie -- but it only causes Peyton to repeat her earlier command. Jackie jumps again, kicking the Nidoran square in the rear-end before landing back in her original spot.

Peyton is quick to lift Jackie up into her arms, grin wind across her face as she looks down at the unconscious Nidoran. It lays over the mound it was so fierce to protect and Peyton thinks it better to leave both untouched, putting a good amount of distance between her team of two and the pokemon.

"An excellent job, Jackie. Really, you came out very far ahead! I'm proud of you!" she says to the wriggling mound in her arms, attempting to find a comfortable position. "Good movement across the field. I liked how you used agility to position yourself." Peyton doesn't know if the pokemon can even understand her words, but speaks them nonetheless. She is rewarded with the bump of a nose to her shoulder, and then the weight of Jackie's head resting in her arms as they make their way further down the Route.

Jackie falls asleep quickly, the lull of being rocked by Peyton's onward trek through the winding route being a perfect chance to doze. As she sleeps Peyton is careful to keep the bumps in the road to a minimum, grazing over rocks and holes in the path with minor error. The water to her left looks as though painted into place, small crests of water turning a blue-white as the wind begins to pick up. She wonders, mildly, if it would be wise to wake Jackie for a chance to enjoy the water.

The thought does not last long before her attention drifts to a Mareep that grazes just beside the waterfront. It chews slowly on the grass as though savoring each bite, and it is at that moment that Peyton nudges Jackie awake. Although the Buneary does not wake kindly (a stern look, something resembling a frown on her otherwise dopey face) she is eager to get back into the throng of action. Peyton's arms act as a platform to leap off of, and before long the Buneary is rushing to blow a charming kiss to the Mareep in question without prompt.

"If you're up to it, Jackie, I suppose we can go for a round two," she calls as she runs into the brush to follow. Thorns scrape at her calves, but they are quickly forgotten upon seeing the Mareep rear up on its hind legs before launching itself towards Jackie. It tackles the Buneary to the ground, causing her to pull her ears close to her head as she rolls momentarily before righting herself once again.

Peyton is quick to yell a, "dizzy punch!" in hopes of confusing the Mareep -- but to no avail. The flurry of strikes from the Buneary's ears land without disorient, and only seem to make the Mareep angrier at the lack of a fleeing audience. The sheep-like pokemon sends out a wave of electricity from its wool, effectively locking Jackie in place for the follow up tackle that sends the Buneary back to the ground. It is enough to make Peyton take a step forward, frowning as the Mareep looks as though it is ready to launch another tackle.

"Get up, Jackie! Try to use jump kick!" Sluggish due to the paralysis, Jackie is not quick to move. She manages to push herself up from the dirt and then runs to face the Mareep, launching herself into the air to perform a jump kick that knocks the Mareep off of its feet. Its wool gives off a jolt of electricity, shocking Jackie with a burst of thunder, but the Buneary remains looming overhead.

Peyton gives the order to punch the Mareep dizzy, and on cue Jackie releases a flurry of punches from her ears. The fight ends as Peyton steps over to where Jackie continues to stand over the Mareep and picks her companion back up into her arms. "I think we'll have to pick up something to handle that paralysis when we get to town." She admits that she is not a fan of her pokemon locking up in battle. She's afraid that if it were to be drawn out any longer, her Buneary would have been tackled into fainting. Or worse.

"We'll get you looked at when we get to the town, too. We should probably try to avoid any more fights." Peyton is accustomed to thinking aloud, letting her thoughts carry to the wind and away. Jackie simply snuggles in close to her arms, pulling her ears close to her head and closing her eyes.

Peyton has half of a mind to leave the Shinx in the route when it stands on the path, blocking her and Jackie from continuing further. At least, for about as large as a small pokemon could black the path -- with it's fur fluffed and its stance wide, the Shinx only wishes to stop them. It sparks out of fury as though Peyton had personally stepped on its home nest, and Peyton has nothing to say to it. She would like to step over it, but Jackie stirs in her arms.

The Buneary makes it abundantly clear that she would like to fight the Shinx, and Peyton does not have the heart to deny her of the request. She merely asks, "are you sure?" Then she sets Jackie onto the dirt path one last time before putting a healthy distance between herself at the battle field. Jackie doesn't wait before running forwards, using her ears to batter the Shinx with a series of dizzying punches that leaves it disoriented and unsure of which direction seems to point up. The Shinx responds by tackling Jackie to the ground, but the Buneary stands moments later and only pauses for a breath.

"Another dizzy punch, Jackie." The Buneary did not need to be told as she was already stepping to the Shinx, angling her head down and letting her ears come out in yet another array of punches. It baffles the Shinx a second time, and instead of sending a shock of electric charge in the direction of Jackie it merely shocks on itself. Jackie follows the shock up with a kick as she jumps up, landing down on her feet while the Shinx remains in a slump on the ground before her.

Peyton picks Jackie up again, mumbles a word of congratulation, and heads toward the exit of the Route. The pokemon center will be the first on her list of places to visit.
