WITH HER CALM stare directed down to the gentle glow of her phone, Noelani wandered carelessly down the road. Her thumb scrolled leisurely through the data displayed onscreen, lashes falling slow and heavy over her eyes as the noon sun beat down overhead.[break][break]
The trainer didn't travel alone, Magikarp held securely in her arms as the Meowth at her side ventured forward with his arms folded across his chest, a dissatisfied frown pulling the edges of his mouth downward. His eyes followed after a passing gnat as he moved, an irritable snort breaking the otherwise quiet walk as the cat's jealous gaze turned toward the side of the road.[break][break]
Magikarp was tense, whiskers trembling as his empty gaze stared out over the winding path, horrified of what was to come.[break][break]
The fish went rigid as the Alolan slowed to a stop. Her eyes set fixed on her device, fully devoted to picking through the information listed on its screen as she slowly leaned down, the pokemon in her hold only thrashing more wildly at the movement.[break][break]
Magikarp was dropped to the ground with ease, left to flop madly against the dirt.[break][break]
❝ Keep up, ❞ Noelani ordered as she set forward again, her fingers moving swiftly across the displayed keypad to pull up a new screen.[break][break]
The fish wheezed in disapproval, floundering in his place before slapping his tail to the ground to hop along after his trainer, his awkward shuffle leaving a snaking trail in the dust behind them. Kitten's eyes narrowed, his paw lifting to draw itself along his whiskers as he kept his gaze to the towering blades of grass framing the road.[break][break]
❝ You won't be getting help, Magikarp, ❞ she gently reminded, the weight of her words hitting her pokemon like a two ton weight. Magikarp flinched, his eyes screwing themselves shut as he waffled forward a bit more quickly in his fearful determination. ❝ So be careful to listen to my instruction this time. ❞[break][break]
" Khaa! " was the gasping cry in response.[break][break]

The Meowth was careful to keep from alerting his partners, rolling his head back a short way as he stretched his paws in a lazy stretch up into the air before folding them behind his head as a comfortable support.[break][break] Magikarp, unlike his keen-eared companion, had to put an ample amount of effort into keeping up with his trainer's leisurely pace. His muscles coiled and released like a worn spring as he continually launched himself forward, panting weakly all the while. The pair's trainer was equally oblivious, the fish's struggle to breathe drowning what would otherwise be the noisy snout of the dog just a short ways off the marked road.[break][break] ❝ Let me know if you notice anything, Kitten, ❞ she instructed, eyes still turned cluelessly toward the road.[break][break] Preferring to get the trip over with as soon as possible, Kitten slowed to a stop, his face turning slowly toward the grass as he directed his ears toward the pawsteps of the Growlithe nearby. A rolling, lilt of a growl echoed from his throat, easily garnering the green-haired woman's attention.[break][break] Sandaled feet fell to a halt, the fish squirming at her heels giving a single, desperate hop to land just beside them. The university student didn't pay the pokemon any mind as her eyes searched through the stalks of grass bowing gently under the wind, her gaze quickly catching sight of the canine's brightly colored orange and black pelt.[break][break] ❝ Here, ❞ Noelani spoke, her thumb moving sharply to dart across her screen and access the phone's stopwatch.[break][break] ❝ We're fighting Growlithe, ❞ she informed Magikarp, turning her eyes toward him as he rested himself against the ground, his body swelling and shrinking with labored breath.[break][break] ❝ I want you to use your new technique, ❞ she continued, dropping to a knee to assure the pokemon with a gentle hand rested to his fine. Kitten turned a sidelong gaze toward the fish, his head tilting in silent challenge as he stared his teammate down. Whatever success the woman had found in her consoling gesture was quickly lost as the pokémon flailed fearfully in his place, gulping down air at the prospect of a challenge from the Meowth.[break][break] ❝ Do not lose focus, ❞ came the woman's voice as she rose back to her full height, her tone a clear reflection of the certainty with which she'd chosen the fish's opponent.[break][break] Magikarp steeled himself, lids slanting to as dangerous a line the fish could manage as he set his gaping mouth in a determined line. His whiskers gave a quick twitch as he focused himself, his body twisting slightly before launching high into the air - his body sailing to land just beside Growlithe.[break][break] The dog jumped in its place, skittering to one side as the pokemon landed abruptly in the grass just beside it. Eyes wide, the fur along the canine's neck bristled high as it straightened its posture, standing ready for battle. It was more confused than disappointed when it realized just what, exactly, had challenged it.[break][break] ❝ Begin, ❞ Noelani called from her place, her finger tapping to start the timer as she stepped toward the grass to watch the ensuing battle. Kitten rolled his eyes as he reluctantly followed after, careful not to leave his trainer's side.[break][break] GROWLITHE'S INTIMIDATE LOWERED MAGIKARP'S ATTACK! [break] Growlithe bore its teeth as it turned slowly to face Magikarp, the show of fangs eliciting a worried bead of sweat to trail along the fish's face. Magikarp flailed briefly in defiance of his fears, though the growl rumbling from the dog's throat quashed the attempt at resilience.[break][break] The pup opened its jaws when the fish failed to retreat, its speed easily granting it the first attack in the battle. Flames flickered against its tongue as it readied a blast of hot embers, a brief breath drawn through its leathery nose before it breathed the smoldering flames out toward its opponent. Muscles coiled and set to tear, Magikarp put all his focus to attacking rather than attempt to avoid the attack, the momentary sear of the fiery embers only fueling his attack with desperation.[break][break] GROWLITHE used EMBER![break]

Growlithe was hit for minor damage! [break] In exchange for a darkened patch of his opponent scales, the dog was slapped in the face with a slap of he fish's tail. Its round ears drew back as it gave a sharp, assertive bark toward Magikarp, the fish floundering for a moment as it found its way back to the ground with a graceless 'plunk'.[break][break] ❝ Magikarp — ❞ called his trainer's voice from the sidelines, the woman quick to take note as his posture relaxed a bit from the successful hit. ❝ Don't give in! ❞ The pokémon had been chided enough times to know not to remove his gaze from his opponent, his focus renewed as they began their second round of attacks.[break][break] Growlithe darted quickly to circle around the fish, aiming not to take another clap to the muzzle. His lips peeled back as he drew in another breath for a second shot of embers toward his enemy. The water type was less fearful this time, however, attempting to use his flail to skirt the attack and flip his body around to crash his bony skull against that of his combatant.[break][break] GROWLITHE used EMBER![break]

[break] Magikarp's speed wasn't a match for the canine, the hot embers finding their mark with ease to leave another patch of scorched scales - but the burn spurred the fish onward, his head sounding against the Growlithe's with a resounding 'crack' as he struck with all his might.[break][break] Kitten rolled his eyes, his trainer's gaze moving steadily to drop from the battle and analyze with clock ticking away on her phone.[break][break] Growlithe was quickly catching on that the fire wasn't proving terribly effective against its enemy. It shook its head as it took a small step back, wincing mildly from the knock to its head as it watched Magikarp fall back toward the ground, his body flexing to fling him right back into the air in an attempt to keep mobile.[break][break] Paws sounded with a rustle of grass as the dog, raced in sharply with what it hoped would be the final hit. Magikarp was still in the air as the canine bound toward him, slamming his shoulder into the fish's side. His eyes screwed shut from the sheer force of the impact, the collision forcing the air from his lungs and leaving a deepset bruise in his side.[break][break] His eyes snapped open as he whirled his body sharply, twisting around to bat the dog with what little of his strength remained.[break][break] Growlithe used Take down![break]

[break] Before Growlithe's paws could meet the earth, Magikarp's tail came whipping around to meet him, the pain biting at the fish's scales and the fatigue wearing at his muscles fueling a final, desperate attack that sent the pup flying back, its body bouncing limp against the ground before tumbling just a few feet away in the grass - still.[break][break] Magikarp shivered, his body braced against the grass in expectation of his final blow - but it never came. His eyes opened suddenly, gaze darting around wildly in search of his enemy. He blinked as the realization washed over him. The battle had ended. [break][break]wild thread![break]

His strained hearing was met only with the murmur of fabric over skin as she slipped a hand into her trusty red dufflebag, its opposite reaching to join in the search before drawing out a trio of potions.[break][break] ❝ Are you feeling more confident? ❞ Noelani questioned softly, a hand guiding itself to ease its fingers under he thin veneer of his fin, carefully guiding it aside to spray the potion against the nasty bruise darkening the fish's side.[break][break] Magikarp blinked his eyes slowly, relaxing. The breath held in his body eased slowly from his lips as he lay still, the medicinal spray against his scales dulling the throbbing pain pulsing along his battered ribcage. He didn't make any move to answer, remaining quiet as he gazed around, content to let his trainer tend to his wounds.[break][break] Kitten had been pleased enough to keep his place at the sidelines, but as Noelani's efforts persisted he carefully wandered forward, placing himself at the woman's side. His gaze trailed along he fish's body as he assessed the damage, altogether unimpressed with the water type's performance. The cat's eyes turned elsewhere as he lost interest, searching the grass for another opponent for the injured pokemon as he climbed his way to set at the professor-to-be's shoulder.[break][break] ❝ You're getting stronger, ❞ she praised as she withdrew the cluster of empty bottles to her bag, leaving Magikarp restored to fighting shape.[break][break] With his confidence restored, Magikarp gave a single, mighty flop against the ground in wholehearted agreement. [break][break] Noelani used Potion [x3] on Magikarp![break]

Her lashes blinked slowly over her eyes as her gaze trailed toward the pokémon resting at her shoulder, following the line of his arm to set her eyes on a nearby Vulpix basking in the sun nearby.[break][break] ❝ This way, ❞ she spoke softly, inspiring Magikarp onward as she stepped calmly toward the resting fox.[break][break] The red-furred fire type blinked its eyes open at the sound of approaching steps, sleepy eyes turning up toward Noelani as she slowed to a stop only a couple of yards away. The fox seemed far from intimidated, rolling languidly onto its back with a subtle twitch of its six tails as it squared its eyes on the Meowth resting at the woman's shoulder with only the briefest look of passing interest. Its eyes fell shut as it warmed its belly, quite certain its afternoon rest wouldn't be interrupted.[break][break] ❝ The clock is ready. Begin. ❞[break][break] On cue, Magikarp beat his tail to the ground with all of his strength, lips pulled in a grim line as he soared high into the air - sailing right over the head of his trainer to land as a barrier between her and the wild pokémon soon to serve as his opponent. Vulpix nearly jumped out of its skin at the fish's sudden appearance, fur frizzing as it scrambled to its feet to retaliate. Its shock slowly ebbed away however as it set eyes on the determined fish, lids weighing heavy over its eyes as it glanced up toward the trainer in questioning disbelief.[break][break] The fish was quick to make clear that his challenge was no joke, bouncing his body forward to wriggle its fins wildly at the vulpix' face. His speed left much to be desired however, as launching himself in the air gave the fox ample time to shoot a mouthful of blazing embers to scald his hard-scaled form.[break][break] VULPIX USED EMBER![break]

Agile paws guided it in a sharp circle as it swerved around to face its enemy, jaws parting to reveal its sharp rows of teeth as it locked eyes with Magikarp, its gaze flashing a vibrant shade of fuchsia. The gleam didn't go unnoticed by the fish, though hiss resolve failed to waver as it thrust his tail to the ground to propel himself toward the fox in another flail.[break][break] Vulpix used confuse ray![break]

[break] The wear on the water type was beginning to show, his scuffed scales rising and falling with carefully controlled breath as his gaze darted around to pin the location of the opponent that now seemed to spin before his eyes - the confuse ray having effectively thrown him off course. Noelani was silent as she watched on, thumb ready at her timer for the battle to end.[break][break] From the pokémon's perspective, with the world dancing and twisting around him, fire seemed to close in on him from all sides as the Vulpix aimed another ember from its position, teeth drawing apart to spit the small flecks of flame in what appeared to be an undodgable attack. The fish was determined not to lose heart, eyes closing as it launched itself toward where he suspected the fox to be, aiming to crash his body against its skull.[break][break] Vulpix used ember![break]

Vulpix was coming in hot, paws rushing to greet Magikarp with the fox's shoulder in another lightning speed quick attack near as soon as the flames had scattered across his body. The fish's eyes narrowed as he readied himself, catching the ground's tremble under the sharp footfalls of the fox with the sensitive line of his whisker. Vulpix' attack was met with a strong blow to its side as they collided, exchanging their blows.[break][break] Vulpix used quick attack![break]

[break] It was just in time, as the fox used their newfound closed distance to initiate another quick attack, only needing a couple of steps to crash its skull against the fish - landing a critical blow. Magikarp wheezed as the air was forced from his body, screwing his eyes shut as a bead of sweat worked its way down his face. The shift of fabric and the now familiar sound of the plastic tap of a potion bottle drew Magikarp's eyes to his trainer.[break][break] Noelani folded her legs beneath herself carefully, lowering herself to the ground at Magikarp's side to start on his second round of recovery. The bright orange of his scales sported a healthy sheen, a tap of her finger to their surface revealing that their bone-like structure had hardened since his capture. Her fingers moved over his shape carefully, drawing themselves under his fin to roll it in its place, searching for any signs of strain.[break][break] Magikarp, feeling a considerable amount better than he did after his previous better, was content to let his trainer work, his body relaxing under the cool spray of potion being administered to the scales bearing a thin coat of ash from his opponent's embers.[break][break] Kitten, none too enthused with the entire ordeal, turned his eyes toward the fallen Vulpix, slitted gaze checking over its furry body for any signs of wear. The corner of his mouth pulled tight a moment as his focus drifted back toward the fish still under his master's care, watching him carefully.[break][break] ❝ One more, ❞ Noelani spoke, gathering up the pair of emptied potion bottles to stow them away in her bag. Both of the pokemon were surprised when a crinkle of plastic revealed to be a plastic bottle, the woman lifting it a short ways in front of her before snapping the seal of the cap and twisting it open. Kitten's tail moved thoughtfully to one side, watching intently as she brought the drink to her mouth for a small sip.[break][break] His tail twitched as the rim of the bottle was lowered from her lips, her gaze turning toward him as she held the bottle out in quiet offer. He watched her warily a moment before taking the bottle in both hand, tilting it upward to take a few swallows of water before handing it back.[break][break] The trainer couldn't help but smile at the Meowth as he returned his drink to her, but the friendly gesture wasn't enough to inspire any indication of fondness in return. His lips remain set in a bored line as he withdrew his paw from the bottle, well aware of who it would be offered to next.[break][break] Sure enough the woman held the bottle out toward Magikarp, canting her head slightly as she offered him a drink as well. The fish opened its mouth wide in reply, inspiring a fond smile to the woman's expression as she poured the drink into his mouth. [break][break] Noelani used Potion [x2] on Magikarp![break]

Her hand traced a ghosting touch along his side as she rose to her feet, her eyes lifting to cast over the grass in search. Their final opponent was easily found, the flicker of their fiery mane dancing clearly in the distance.[break][break] Screwing the lid onto her water bottle the woman started forward again, Kitten turning to trot lazily at her heels as Magikarp thwacked his tail to the ground, hopping along after the two. He was having a much easier time of following after his trainer, having managed to gain a fair measure of control over his body over the course of their training.[break][break] The water bottle was traded for her phone as she reached into her bag, the group's presence setting the wary young foal on alert as they drew nearer. The horse pawed at the ground in warning as the trainer slowed to a stop, lowering its head in a gesture of caution as the woman's warm green eyes set to her phone. The mare's shot a heavy breath from her leathery nose, tail swatting anxiously at the scent of the small pokémon still disguised from view by the surrounding stalks of tall grass.[break][break] ❝ This one will be faster, ❞ the student warned toward her pokémon, eyes leveling with Ponyta as her finger tapped to the face of her phone, starting the clock. ❝ Start. ❞[break][break] Magikarp shifted against the grass, angling himself before launching himself forward with the strength of his tail, shooting his body to rocket through the grass and strike the Ponyta in its jaw with all the speed and power of a miniature torpedo.[break][break] Magikarp used tackle![break]

Magikarp's attack fell! [break] The horse retaliated with a cautioning rumble that caught the fish off guard, but it did nothing to spare the mare of further assault. Ponyta met the attack with a rear of its hooves, turning to raise its legs in the air and crush Magikarp under its heels.[break][break] Magikarp used tackle![break]

Sucking a deep breath in through its nose, the horse braced itself before spitting a blazing hot mouthful of embers toward the fish, the Magikarp waiting against the ground below to take the hit before launching himself upward to twist and flail against the horse's face in a wild flail.[break][break] Ponyta used ember!

The skin along its shoulders twitched as it took a step back to avoid another flail to its face, eyes narrow as it snorted irritably toward the fish that had shown itself surprisingly capable of putting up a fight.[break][break] Magikarp's eyes followed as Ponyta stepped around his form cautiously, working to plot out its next move, but he took the circling as a chance to attack - tail flicking to the ground to shoot his body toward the horse's ribs, aiming to force the breath from its lungs. Ponyta wasn't quick enough to prevent the attack from hitting its mark, only managing to skip away after impact to blow another stream of embers toward the determined fish.[break][break] MAGIKARP used Tackle![break]

Magikarp was hit for minor damage! [break] The Ponyta may have retreated if not for the fatigue now showing on Magikarp's features. His eyes narrowed as he wheezed heavily through his mouth, flipping in the air to land his fin to the ground in order to throw himself right back into the fray. Ponyta turned to meet the attack with another flurry of hooves - but the tackle proved to be all that was needed to bring the horse down.[break][break] Magikarp used tackle![break]

Ponyta fainted! [break] The horse stumbled to the side, spindly legs collapsing beneath it to send it falling sidelong toward the ground as Magikarp kicked off from its side using his tail.[break][break] The fish huffed, breathing heavily as he slapped his tail against in defiance of the stubborn horse.[break][break] The round after round of battling was taking its toll on the fish's tired muscles, fins twitching slightly as he worked to gather his scarce breath. His gaze never left the horse, even after the fight - it wasn't until he caught the shudder of the grass signalling his trainer's approach that his eyes rolled to meet her, only barely taking note of the Meowth resting at her shoulder.[break][break] Her eyes were soft as she stepped near Magikarp, his training shining through in his posture alone. No words were necessary to convey her praise, her gaze being enough to soften the fish's eyes as they misted over with tears, his lips falling back to a trembling line.[break][break] He was sure of it. He was getting stronger.[break][break]wild thread end![break]
