"rain dance, aqua tail, icy wind, blizzard, ice beam, surf..."
victor eyes the heavy, rock pokemon with a dubious glare before returning to rhydon's pokedex entry. despite its appearance, the pokedex claims that rhydon has the aptitude to use a good mixture of ice and water moves, moves that seem counter intuitive to a pokemon that inherently loaths water. victor still doubts the pokedex, even moreso when his dumb brute of a pokmon skimpers away from the ocean's tide. so much for being able to SURF.
olivine beach is surprisingly empty today. it's a prime opportunity for victor to test out rhyhorn's ability to function on different terrain. water is no exception. the loft, wet sand displaces the impact of rhyhorn's STOMP. any traction rhyhorn is used to is dilluted by the sand sinking underneath shitter's weight. the closer they get to the water the deeper rhyhorn sinks, whimpering as it reapproaches.
the tide comes up and swallow victor's feet, stopping short of his shins. rhyhorn darts away from the rising tide, crying aloud at victor's disregard to being touched by ocean water. "don't be such a pussy," he scolds, "it's just water." having a distinct weakness to an element didn't that it needed to be feared. the difference between tamed and feral pokemon was a trainer's acute assessment of how much their pokemon could handle. being able to disregard rhyhorn's primal fear of water is the first step to being able to bring out its full potential.
little do they know what lurks underneath the ocean's surface. the natural eb and flow of the tide creates the perfect camoflague for any ripples made from movements below. while victor isn't one to be oblivious, he's not particularly afraid of anything that could be found this close to the city. whatever shitter can't handle victor will take care of himself.

it's strong; the heavy, rock pokemon that stands in the water, battling the constant tides of the ocean. she's sat on the sand, under the cover a stray palm tree provides, shielding away the hot rays of the sun. shadows cast over her bare legs, and as the wind blows, causing the trees to sway, so too do the shadows. the beach is seemingly vacant; her eyes only see the two in the water, but yet, there's something that's making her anxious. she's not too sure what, but she's sure there's something. so she keeps her eyes peeled.
the man in the water trains unconventionally, she knows as much. putting a pokemon in an environment where it would be inherently weak in could be seen as tough. maybe even vicious. but the more she thinks about it, the more she starts to realize: conditioning a pokemon against its natural weaknesses only makes it stronger. throw a rhyhorn into the ocean and what fear would it have against a small stream of water?
her hands linger, tracing the outline of the pokeball as she watches. a tide comes in and crashes against the rhyhorn, causing it to dart away from its trainer only to be scolded. was she like this with her cacnea? she rises to her feet and swipes at stray sand on her leg. clad in swimming attire, she strolls down to the beach, eyes mindful of the trainer lurking in the water.
once close enough, she sits down on the wet sand, edging on the border where the waves came in. she's directly behind the two, or in front of, depending on whose perspective. "don't mind me," she calls out, "just watching." and learning. her finger pushes against the single button on the pokeball, calling out her cacnea. the grass-type stretches, blinking as it relishes the strong rays of the sun. she often forgot how much lugh craves sunlight.
"please, continue, darling."

oddities come in threes - remember that.
the first is a woman-- fair on the eyes but harmful to the intuition. the bronze of her skin makes her the finest exotic trophy, shaming the bronzor in name. but the better the looker the harder it is to stay away from judgement. a baboon like victor has no finesse. his years were spent growing in a jungle of steel cells and testosterone. this monkey cannot comprehend that women are no different than men. there's no way ava could be interested in his training. no, only men liked to fight. so what was she interested in?
the second is a pokemon-- it travels not by sea but by air. little does victor expect to see a magnemite on the ocean side, much less the package it has in tow. bronzor is unfamiliar to him but he remembers magnemite's evolution line. he's also aware of how little he knows. his time may have been taken from him but the world went on. it's entirely possible that this a new pokemon. but that doesn't change anything. the solution is all the same. "run it through."
the third is an attitude-- from cuck to cucking, rhyhorn is no longer timid. the presence of another trigger the beast's innate aggression. territory is something set in stone and this rock will not have it. a snarl exhales from shitter's snout as he paws the sand in anticipation. no one is allowed to approach, neither magnemite nor bronzor, neither ava nor cacnea. victor's orders is the only thing that divert's shitter's hostility. he steers it to the wild ones and the rhyhorn charges forward, sharp as a STONE EDGE.
a temper that's rock hard is stil brittle under the pressure of steel. shitter's first contact is met with resistance and his attack is reciprocated with a thunderSHOCKING welcome. a follow up HORN DRILL really drives the welcome home, hurling the conjoined pokemon back and inadvertently closer to the trainers. tossed and tumbled, the duo are left CONFUSED, trying to gather their bearings before rhyhorn starts another charge.

he doesn't respond, which upsets her because it's not what she's used to. she gets what she wants. his attention's drawn away by the magnemite. his eyes glare, fierce with resolve, but it doesn't intimidate her. his words are strict orders, and the rhyhorn obliges to its master. rhyhorn is not to be trifled with, she knows why, and when it charges through with a powerful attack, she understands why. magnemite is no match for rhyhorn; its strength unrivaled, unparalleled. its unpredictability makes it dangerous.
she keeps her distance, soon rising off the sand as she commands her cacnea. "take an attack, then retaliate." she judges him for his strict orders but her words mirrored his. each TACKLE is returned with a PAYBACK. the sound of metal being hit echoes even out in the open air. lugh feels drowsy, and it's then that he realizes he's been set in a HYPNOSIS. his eyes grows weary and it's not long until he's out cold, dozing off in the middle of the hot beach.
ava remains calm because she knows bronzor isn't a serious threat. her eyes are focused on rhyhorn, and how confidently it moves. and how viciously it attacks. a final attack sends the magnemite pummeling into the sand. she takes another step back. lugh wakes up in time to return a PAYBACK, knocking the bronzor into the sand as well. he's smaller, but he's as strong as the beast.
rhyhorn doesn't stop, apparently confused after the battle. her eyes shot over to the trainer. "control your beast." like she said, it's its unpredictability and lack of control that makes it that much more dangerous. in a life or death battle, it'd prove to be useful. it fights like it has nothing to lose, which reflects its trainer. she's normally a good judge of character, and she's certain she has him read.

oh?
a brisk command directs his attention elsewhere. his surprise is evident by the stupefied expression slathered onto his face, dotted by the notched eyebrows raised ever so slightly. he hadn't expected any help, much less for her to join the fray. women were supposed to be repulsed by the sight of conflict, not embrace it. the whole dynamic throws him off, allowing cacnea to swindle away a win from right under his nose.
shitter is the same. the pokemon's one dimensional mind can't comprehend the difference between friend and foe. anyone other than victor is a toy, one made of flesh and meant to be battered. "i can't," victor states plainly. "it's retarded." his apathy toward their situation implies a certain degree of confidence. sure enough, shitter stops in his trap. the abrupt change in velocity causes the pokemon to tumble. whatever caused it to stop was obviously unintentional.
an unearthed aron is tossed into the air and onto the beach. the rock pokemon had been nestled under the sand and ended up tripping rhyhorn up as it ran over it. how much victor knew about the aron's placement was left for her to decide. he wouldn't spare her a word.
"EARTHQUAKE."
shitter's front hooves is brought up. this will be the fixed point of impact, a concentration of all of rhyhorn's potential energy. a single STOMP shatters what little consciousness the aron has. from being tussled from its slumber to being beat into submission, the aron has no chance to fight back. the muffled clang of steel is the last sound heard before rhyhorn FLINGs aron's unconscious body away.
the little bout is a good enough distraction to temper rhyhorn's RAGE. with an exaggerated humph, it waddles over closer to victor. the beast no longer bats an eye at the other human, only wary of her pokemon and the shieldon that approaches.

this is dangerous. she grits her teeth while she watches the rhyhorn battle. it trips over something in the sand, and when it's revealed to be an aron, the trainer wastes no time. "don't—" but it's too late. the rhyhorn raises its hooves and slams it into the ground, causing a strong tremor to echo across the beach. she lowers herself to the ground to help her balance. unfortunately, for her, her cacnea isn't able to do the same, and takes a small portion of the damage. his body is flung into the air, but he soon lands with a solid thud.
when the ground stopped shaking, ava shoots him a glare as she rises to her feet. "you fucking idiot." venom spews from her words as she's left having to assess the situation. thankfully, the rhyhorn's relatively new to battling. if it had been stronger, the damage would be more catastrophic. it makes quick work of the aron, who's been out cold since initial attack. for their sake, she contemplates attacking the rhyhorn. she knows she could take him; she was certain of it.
instead, she turns her attention to the shieldon that waddles over. she doesn't even have to speak. lugh doesn't wait for her orders, and charges in for a PAYBACK, using the damage he had taken from the rhyhorn and turning it into the offensive. it lets out a sharp, piercing METAL SOUND that causes lugh to stumble back, falling victim to a TACKLE. but with every instance of damage he takes, he dishes it out in return, in the form of a PAYBACK.
another NEEDLE ARM, and down the shieldon goes. she turns to the man. "are you as retarded as your rhyhorn? or is it just a coincidence?"

only now does victor have the chance to realize the repercussions of his actions. not that he cares. a nonchalant " eh" is all that he can muster. insults mean little to him and goading him is near impossible. not that he can differentiate between her well deserved anger and jealousy. it's not like it matters. there's more important things to worry about, like the gastly rises from aron's shell. now that's a pokemon he's familiar with. since coming to johto, it's been all new species left and right. ava's cacnea is no exception. however, victor's comfort is short lived. for a gastly to appear, and here of all places, could only mean a few things. the most obvious guess was that he had been too thorough with handling that aron. oops. guess shitter doesn't know his own strength. oh well, if they did it once, they can surely do it again. " shit." ghost pokemon were immune to plain physical attacks. victor knew that much. EARTHQUAKE wouldn't be any better either. just by eyeballing the pokemon, he could assume that ground attacks wouldn't work on a pokemon that's airborne. LEVITATE was such a pesky ability. so what did that leave him? just his pokedex, one that he leisurely scoured as rhyhorn sat there awaiting commands. " SMACK DOWN?" it's a new move but going by what the pokedex said, it's perfect for this situation. imagine his surprise when rhyhorn rushed toward the vengeful ghost, expelling a large rock from its mouth. no MEAN LOOK could SPITE shitter enough to stop the projectile from crushing the gastly, burying it into the sand. from there, shitter could give ava a nice encore of EARTHQUAKE. each impact dug it deeper into the sand, literally BULLDOZING the pokemon deeper into a newly made grave. maybe it'll stay down this time.

from the corpse of the aron rises a gastly, eyes wide and blank, tongue extended at the ready. her eyes immediately shift to the trainer, assessing his actions because she knows his rhyhorn's at a disadvantage. most physical attacks don't work against ghost-types. rhyhorn against gastly is no exception. he pulls out a pokedex before finally coming to a decision. the beast charges forward, and ava knows in that moment that it would be victorious. very little could combat a pokemon with such intensity and strength. a rock emerges and eliminates the ghost-type.
the battle doesn't end there. it just has to continue, much to her dismay. the rhyhorn slams its hooves into the ground yet again, sending shock waves rippling through the ground. the ground splits apart in some areas; causing sand to slowly sink through the gaps, along with it goes the remains of the pokemon the rhyhorn had made quick work of.
ava remains on her feet, just barely, and her cacnea does so, too. she realizes that no amount of words could deter the man; his skin is as thick as his head. the impact sends a wooper flying straight out of the water and onto the sand, only to be smacked away by a strong NEEDLE ARM. he looks to ava, and she understands exactly what he wants.
a nod and a gesture is all it takes. cacnea charges forward, closing the distance in no time. he reels back an arm and sends it swinging, spikes sharp, right into the side of the rhyhorn for a NEEDLE ARM.
she's not an idiot. she understands the implications of her actions, and accepts it. she has various thoughts that justifies her actions in her head, but the one that sticks out the most is that the male is an idiot, and that his actions are dangerous. he needs to be taught a lesson, and she has no qualms about being the one to do so.

that sneaky little bitch! a single side swipe leaves shitter battered, beaten. a distressed cry escapes from a pained exhale, pulling itself up with significant effort. " what the hell?" victor's accusation does little to reassure shitter. it only leave him anxious - afraid. but there's no rest for the wicked. victor anticipates an ENCORE and is already scrutinizing his pokedex for a solution. " grass type? damn." on paper, there's none. victor's left without an answer. " guess you're fucked, rhyhorn." under the current circumstances, victor is nothing but a spectator, isolating himself from responsibility. with his limited knowledge, formulating some brilliant reversal is all but impossible. until he realizes what he's watching. " run away!" in a head to head battle, shitter loses every match up. no matter how they rotate their moves, cacnea has too large of an advantage. the only upside rhyhorn has is its bodily structure. actually, it's cacnea's anatomy that provides them a chance. those tiny, little nubs cacnea calls feet can't hope to catch up to a quadruped's speed. shitter's frantic sprint away buys victor time to question ava's intention. " what do you think you're doing?"

the one glaring weakness of a rhyhorn is its inability to react due to its size. it's no secret that it's slow, but what most people don't realize is how fast it's able to run once given the chance to. cacnea's blow lands as planned, invoking a cry from the beast. the trainer's confusion brings a smile to ava's face, though she masks it well. crossing her arms, she watches as lugh continues his chase. they aren't going to kill it, no, that isn't what she wants: she wants it to fear her.
because what is a predator that's afraid?
a prey.
it runs faster than she expects, than cacnea expects, and manages to steer clear from another attack. she knows it's an unfair battle; rhyhorn is outmatched in almost every aspect. the only option it has is to run. and to keep running. cacnea doesn't give up his chase, falling for the ENCORE.
then, a voice. she doesn't even turn to address him, instead keeping her eyes on the battle that's unfolding in front of them. not much of a battle, but still. "having a little fun." her tone mocks. finally, she turns her head and looks at him, grin prominent on her face. "aren't you?" her question's rhetorical. her glare pierces through the air.
"concede. recall it."

" i don't pick at leftovers." his expression darkens. it's clear that he's annoyed but there's nothing he can do. pride is a terrible vice and one victor won't be caught up in. from his current spot, he tries to recall his rhyhorn. tries. shitter won't stop. he can't stop. it's their only advantage and the rock type knows better than to try and defend from another NEEDLE ARM. a few more meters turns the rhyhorn into a grey oval. one that seems to get smaller as it bleeds into the horizon. victor can't win but that doesn't mean he loses.

he can't recall his rhyhorn. each attempt shoots forth a red beam of light that misses. fight-or-flight. it's the simplest of responses present in most, if not all living things. rhyhorn chooses to run because it can't fight. it knows fighting means death.
he chooses to do neither. his failed attempts at recalling his rhyhorn teaches him enough. so, she makes the choice for him. another red beam shoots forth, hitting the cacnea and recalling him back into his pokeball. with the battle officially over, she expects rhyhorn to stop.
she's had her fun, so she takes her leave.
"see you around, handsome."
