The fear of a torturous afterlife did wonders for an audience that knew little about the ill-prepared material of their performer.[break][break] "Yea, I'll try bein' alive. Maybe." Cooper said. "Some day."[break][break] The echoing gurgles seemed to multiply as they bounced and carved back and forth against the tunnel. A large shadow grew from an illuminated section on the cavern wall. The vague peaks and shapes accompanied by the overwhelming grunts sounded like a hellish army ready to drag the two back to the pits of their chthonian district with their twisted claws and teeth.[break][break] But as the shadows shrunk, so did the threat. Two swinub, snorting and sniffing their way to the noise.[break][break] "Roy Case the reborn." Cooper simpered, the title being ludicrous enough to warrant a break in his acting. "Atlas, yer up!" He recalled his Trapinch as his Beldum swung forward like a pendulum in reverse.[break][break] It's hooked end clobbered the oblivious pig, sending it rolling back like a matted ball of cat fur. As the swinub tumbled, its hidden feet collected dirt, compacting it into a hardened ball. Cooper watched the swine shift its weight to its snout, a brief handstand before its bottom end was propelled by the momentum gathered. From its bush of fur, the hardened mud bomb shot forward.[break][break] "Ah shucks!" Cooper said. "Iron Defense!"[break][break] Atlas's metallic skin reclaimed a luster lost from its youth as it toughened its fortifications. The projectile slammed into the beldum, causing him to waver clumsily in the air, but Atlas resisted gravity's draw, floating as if on a disturbed wave.[break][break] "Don't let this demon king down—take that swinub down instead!"[break][break] The beldum's eye rolled. A take down was all that was needed to finish the job. The tuft of brown laying fainted to the side, Asmodeus checked upon his newly rebirthed subject, horns sharp and threatening.[break][break] word count: 337[break]

Roy Case nodded along with the demon's answer. "I've gotta say, I'm a pretty big fan of it myself!" The young man looked through the tunnel, anxiously waiting what his first battle might be upon his spiritual and physical revival. He hopped from one foot to the other in anticipation, finally happy when he saw the two brown tufts of fur sliding across the floor.
"You've got that one? Then this bad boy's mine!" Roy threw out one of his six partners at random, and smiled wide when his donphan made an appearance with a great bellow of her trunk. "Madcap, mangle!" The wild pokémon, startled by Madcap's sudden appearance, let loose a small, snowy flurry that chilled the donphan deep to her bones. "Easy girl, we'll be catching this one," Roy told his partner. "We'll make our first fight a nice one! Natural Gift!"
The Cheri Berry that Madcap held glowed brightly, and from her trunk came a simmering red flame, inspired by the berry's natural properties. The swinub cowered away from the attack, which slightly disappointed Roy. He was kind of hoping the roaring he'd heard earlier meant this creature would be a bit more threatening than the sniveline beast he was currently looking upon. The wild creature kept distance between him and Madcap, firing off another Powder Snow from a ways away.
"Madcap, get out of the way of this one," Roy ordered, and his partner rolled up, easily speeding out of the way of the attack. "Rollout now, but easy on the throttle," the trainer knew well just how quick his partner could go if given the chance. And, though she was disappointed, she obeyed his command, chasing down the retreating swinub with a vengeful fury. Roy's partner barreled over the wild swinub, and he was dazed and confused, stopped momentarily in his tracks.
Upon returning from the dead, the gangster had been hoping for a better challenge to greet his revival, but he wouldn't pass up on the chance to capture a new partner. He lobbed a pokéball towards the scared swinub and crossed his fingers. "How about that, Asmodeus?" Roy addressed the demon, who was wrapping up his own end of the conflict. "I'm already turning over a new leaf!"

"real proud. it's like ya were never dead to begin with!"[break][break] the cowboy had to scrub the sarcasm from his throat before saying that one. scrubbed it until the skin on his fingertips peeled back like a banana.[break][break] "ah, wontcha lookee here." a disjointed cry from a bonsly drew the beldum's attention. the red eye detected malice, the notions of camouflage lost on a creature so young. "guess y'can see the demon king in action without bein' distracted."[break][break] his beldum honed in on its bottom-heavy target. stern eyes surrounded by an alarming yellow followed the floating pokemon as it bounced its knees. the three-pronged head wavered like joysticks assembled by a knock-off brand company. although not as fast as it was due to fatigue, the beldum deftly avoided the other's attacks.[break][break] a low kick was obviously too low, the stone bonsai unable to properly trespass the beldum's space. a rock throw was too telegraphed, unlike the covert maneuvers of a hairy swinub. altas, the beldum, continued to spin circles around the rock at cooper's command and as the bonsly's fake tears flowed into real tears, the beldum sought no mercy.[break][break] first, a swift take down. then a tumbling stone. the nub legs waddled helplessly, like a turtle overturned. although the beldum was intelligent, its potential was stymied by its limited form. atlas wanted to break free. but for now, the relentless battery was enough for him to draw success. another take down was enough to render the bonsly as another still stone among the cavern rocks.[break][break] "we ain't castin no more rituals today, so we should be fine on our way out." cooper clapped his hands together, dusting off the toil of battle. he praised his beldum before summoning him into his ball. Roy Case celebrated the capture of his newest partner with a hoot and collar, fiercely petting Madcap before recalling the partner. Now that he had a second shot at life, Roy was thinking he could be much more productive with his time. Even the investigative mission that had sparked his interest in Union Cave seemed trivial with this change in outlook.
When Asmodeus offered the criminal a chance to look on at his fighting style. The demon's savagery against the wild pokémon was something to behold. Watching the fight reminded Roy of when he would watch gym challenges as a younger man. They inspired him with a wild spark of an idea.
"That was a great fight out there, your unholiness!" Roy complimented the demon with a great big smile. "When we're out of this cave we should try sparring or something, I'd love to see what kind of moves a demon has up their sleeve!" He pulled the map he possessed from his pocket, showing it to Asmodeus. "Now that your servants cleared the cave-in it shouldn't be that difficult."
As Roy realized what leaving the cave meant, he grew a bit melancholy. "Can you really stick around if you're a demon though? Are you gonna stick around on the mortal plane, or will you have to leave to go back to the ninth circle or something?"

"yer a talented battler too, y'know." a compliment. a genuine one, but one meant to edge their conversation in a different direction.[break][break] of course, it failed. his demonic charisma was much too hot to handle. melted the mood like a candle finally sinking lopsided.[break][break] "i have a feelin' you'll see me around." cooper said. he'd introduce the ranch now, but the lie had gone far too deep by now.
