Sometimes the stomach couldn't wait. No matter how iron the will, no matter how resolute the heart, the starving gut won in the end. But it was a defeat Cooper did not mind. If it meant delighting in more of Darcy's cooking, Cooper would wholeheartedly assume the role of a gluttonous jobber.[break][break]

"Been awhile since I had a good hike." Cooper said, settling on the grass. They had already started a fire in the pit, a pot of Darcy's meal peeking slyly from the worn iron lid. "Any luck with that café?"[break][break]

With a satisfied sigh, he wiped the sweat from his brow. Although there was no wind, the steady sound of the nearby river current was enough to cool the senses. Cooper could imagine the stream lightly misting his flushed face.[break][break]

"Starting to smell good, y'know..." Cooper chuckled, his deep voice rumbling. "I'm an old man. Can't move much anymore. Give me a spoonful, would ya?"[break][break]

Opening his mouth expectantly, Cooper waited patiently—but in the corner of his eye he detected suspicious movement stirring in gaussian blurs.

The pit of Darcy's neck, peeking just above the slight v-cut of his undershirt, was slick with sweat. He hadn't really thought about just how far the pair might trek when he messaged Cooper about the hike a few days prior; the young man regretted ever deciding that the light green button up shirt would be a good idea. Sure, it brought out the green flecks in his eyes in just the right lighting and didn't clash with the basic ass khakis he'd opted for convenience sake as well, but after dropping his pack to the dirt and the messenger bag to rifle for his ingredients and get to cooking he couldn't fail to notice the sensation of the layered fabric sticking to his skin.

Go out into the middle of the wilderness with another guy. Get sweaty and disgusting. Classic Darcy.

If he could've figured out a way to curl up into a ball then and there to disappear he just may have. Of course with the task of cooking set before him he'd shed his self conscious shell entirely. It was a pretty simple traveler's fare in an old beat up pot to throw the root vegetables and spices together with a bit of preserved meat, but the trick was adding just enough flour to the pot so that the soup would settle like a stew. Campfire cooking was hardly his forte yet his years in a kitchen spoke for themselves by the wafting aroma of the aromatics he'd stuffed into the pot. It was a shame the only meat he'd had to use was a bit of jerky, but sporadic traveling didn't exactly constitute the perfect recipe for transporting perishables easily.

"No luck on the business front. Still don't have enough saved to think about paying rent on a place with a half decent kitchen, let alone buying my own equipment." The brunette mused.

As it finished, Darcy glanced over to Cooper, having pulled out a pair of worn bowls to divvy up the impromptu stew. He could only pray that Cupcake remained satiated in her Pokeball from the morning tribute he paid to her gullet; if she chose to pop out, the man had little doubt his Pokemon partner could swallow the pot in one fell swoop. His cheeks flushed when the spoonful was requested, his heart pounding in his chest. It was stupid, reacting like that. Sure, Cooper was a bit of a silly guy but from the little time they'd known each other he'd been nothing but nice, giving the younger man advice and pointers about where to go in Johto, but Darcy chalked it up to him being a good guy. It didn't mean he was interested or anything.

Besides, with Darcy's luck Cooper wouldn't just be disinterested. He might even be disgusted at the thought; and that, my friends, was enough potential heartbreak to steel our young chef's nerves into a shield unlike any other.

"I think your arms work fine still, Mr. Armstrong." Darcy joked half-heartedly, holding out the bowl in lieu of a spoonful. He even used his cheery customer service voice and everything to make it a tease and an attempt to cover up his own doubts and fears.

During this, Darcy was more than prepared for the faint rustling he heard in the nearby brush. His cooking tended to attract more than it's fair share of wild Pokemon at times; maybe it was a good thing.

cooper received the bowl with both hands and let the warmth toast his palms. as the steam met his face, the aroma billowing up his flared nostrils, he could imagine the taste that rolled like phantoms on the wisps. a brave lip pressed against the bowl, but before cooper could enjoy darcy's fine cookery, he jolted in surprise at the raltz. he pointed at the intruder, gesturing to darcy with his head, before jouncing from a high-pitched exclamation behind him.[break][break]

the bowl rocked in his hands. some soup flew over one side. looking back, cooper saw the spotlight hog modelling on the rock.[break][break]

"no, no. no, no, no, no, no." cooper tossed a ball onto the field. daisy leaped into the fray with a readied bleat and after a hearty slurp from the bowl, cooper quickly shouted: "thunder wave her! she's like the guy who brings a fuckin' guitar to a party. who needs that!"[break][break]

the jigglypuff inhaled deeply. her bright eyes shut in anticipation as she bathed in the imaginary ray of a rose-tinted spotlight. but not today satan. in violent arcs, the electric wave shackled the pink songstress, causing her to drop her fake microphone. it clattered on the face of the rock before plopping pitifully in the grass. through her half-petrified face, like a woman in the middle of a stroke, the jigglypuff expressed a severity of emotion known only to divas and self-entitled customers of retail.[break][break]

"yikes. y'see that? she's not happy." cooper slurped a delicious stream of stew, standing up on his legs as the pokemon tensed up. "move up close and discharge! don't want ya shockin' my friend here."[break][break]

the mareep ran forward. during her charge, the wool's friction inspired brighter, more colourful sparks. finally, at the end of her sprint, she cried out to announce the electrifying headlining act.[break][break]

after the lights flickered away, the frazzled jigglypuff grabbed her pen and escaped the reclaimed venue with offended tears in her eyes.[break][break]

Just as Cooper had the opportunity to taste the stew, he seemed distracted by the sudden appearance from the brush. As he motioned to Darcy to check behind him, the cook couldn't help but notice the Jigglypuff bounce out, but Cooper turned to handle that situation.

Darcy, for his own part, turned just in time to watch his own bowl of soup lift from his hand and overturn itself, almost splattering the hot liquid in his lap if not for a quick dodge. A Ralts stood just at the rim of where the brush and the clearing began, psychic energy flaring about her. He gritted his teeth slightly.

"HEY! I made that!"

The Ralts gave out a mischievous giggle and Darcy shot her daggers. The pokeball at his belt was in his hand in moments and with a flash, Cupcake was on the field. The Munchlax blinked and yawned before staring at the Ralts, noticing the aroma of the spilled stew. If she was lucky, Darcy wouldn't object to her lapping up the good bits from the ground, so she at least had to thank the little psychic type for that. The Ralt's horn flared with psychic power, slapping Cupcake with a Confusion. The Munchlax blinked as she lifted off the ground briefly before being slammed into it with small cry.

"C'mon Cupcake, we know you're better than that wannabe!" Darcy cheered, "Give her the old one-two!"

The Munchlax flopped from the ground, hopping forward with ease and flopping onto the Ralts with a powerful Bodyslam. Now, Darcy had merely hoped his guess was right, but as the Ralts was impacted he watched the look of venom in her eyes fade as she was flattened. A Pokemon with so little defensive power simply couldn't handle even a single full powered Body Slam from his little Cupcake it seemed.

a sharp whistle rang in the air. cooper rallied his mareep back, meaning to reward her efforts with some stew—if it was still there by the end of it. dismay coloured cooper's face as he heard darcy's defensive cry. he breathed sharply when he noticed the glowing horn on their intruder, but it was too late to alert darcy (or cupcake for that matter).[break][break]

but cooper's attention was hastily robbed by a surrounding audience of greedy eyes peering through the grass.[break][break]

"darcy, dangnabbit. why d'ya have to be so gosh darn good at cooking?" cooper cried. "now the whole place thinks it's lunch time."[break][break]

although cooper's heart desired so heavily to feed their gathered intruders, feeding the wild was dangerous. sure, these pokémon were relatively young, harmless—but if that teddiursa was erroneously taught to receive hand outs from just about anyone, what would happen when that cub turned into a bear? a snubbull busily nosed its way into the main pot much to the dismay of his mareep.[break][break]

"hey! shoo! out!" cooper quickly withdrew the sparking sheep in case of a destructive discharge. instead, he summoned his trapinch which busily munched on air like a wind-up set of plastic teeth. "protect darcy's food, won'tcha?!"[break][break]

cooper rubbed his grumbling stomach. this was as much as a battle for trapinch as it was for him and his suffering gut. as the ant lion approached, the snubbul growled, slobber escaping its lips as her features contorted into a scary face. altair's approach slowed—but cooper cheered him on. already, the rich colours of soup had stained the muzzle of the pink pitbull.[break][break]

"aim for the face." cooper said.[break][break]

the trapinch pressed onward and launched himself, mouth first. a resounding crunch stuck the pokemon on to the flailing dog's bulbous face. for a moment, cooper was satisfied as the snubbull barked—but sparks began to fly from the slight slits between altair's teeth. the snubbull had bitten (thunder fang) the trapinch inside its mouth. altair's legs wiggled around in shock, but he did not relent.[break][break]

"y'alright?! hit 'em up with a bulldoze! carefully now!" cooper shouted.[break][break]

altair angled himself appropriately for his legs to slam back and forth against the snubbull's body. the dog shook from the sudden vibrations caused by the trapinch's battery. while the snubbull struggled to flee, its vision hindered by the inside of a trapinch's endless cave of a mouth, the overwhelming quakes rendered the dog limp in submission.[break][break]

the trapinch let go. snapping back to cooper. cooper looked around, catching darcy's eye. they were the survivors. the surrounding wild pokemon? they were the horde.[break][break]

Just as it seemed like things were finally settling down enough for the two men to resume their meal, they turned to find the pot assailed by a Snubbull. Cooper wasted little time in switching his Pokemon, something Darcy could only envy slightly. His own Pokemon team was sorely lacking in anything other than Cupcake at the moment, and as much as he loved her he knew challenging a Contest or Gym would require more than a spunky Munchlax. He'd half hoped they'd run into something to add to his team during the hike, but the Ralts had been rather disappointing all in all. Imagine Darcy's surprise when, as she lapped the spilled stew from the ground, Cupcake was accosted by another Pokemon.

The Teddiursa waddled over sweetly, eyes brimming with hearts, literally. Darcy wasn't very well versed in all things battling, truth be told, but at the end of the day shooting hearts while fawning over a Pokemon was probably an attack of some sort. Case in point, the little bear slighly Coveted the stew, sucker punching the Munchlax away and scooping some up in his claws. Darcy whistled lightly at the guts the little bear had to so casually step between Cupcake and a meal she was in the middle of; he knew from personal experience that at the end of the day, it was a fool's errand to try.

As the Teddiursa munched away happily, he was a little taken aback when a rolling green orb of flesh slammed into him and sent him flying into the air, landing away from the food area with a heavy thud. He struggled to his feet, eyeing the rolling Munchlax. Darcy hadn't called the attack, and the bear had let his previous experiences with human trained Pokemon leave him vulnerable. Didn't they all wait for the humans to tell them what to do? The bear's eyes watered as he began to wail, releasing some Fake Tears to offset the Munchlax's assault.

Too bad for the Teddiursa it was of little effect in the grand scheme of things, in multiple ways to boot. The bear didn't have a special attack type move to strike the Munchlax with, and Cupcake didn't have a care in the world other than teaching the little food thief a lesson. She slammed into him a second time, and the bear went sailing into the air with a cry. Darcy had to admit that Rollout was a useful little attack the longer a fight went on, gaining power the longer that Cupcake rolled. Two hits to do in the bear was pretty good, wasn't it?

He turned to glance at Cooper with a small sigh and shrug. The fairy dog had managed to stick its ugly little maw into the pot and he didn't feel quite as hungry anymore, even if his stomach grumbled a little.

"At least it's over for now, right?" He called over to the other man, tears practically streaming down his face from the lost food.

altair was withdrawn. cooper exhaled deeply. their meal had been tainted, and darcy's defeated demeanour tugged at his heart. he meandered over to him and rubbed his shoulder firmly.[break][break]

"it's over, but—" cooper poured more stew from the infiltrated pot and into his bowl. "i ain't lettin' some ugly nibbler ruin my chance to eat yer good-ass cookin'."[break][break]

stubbornly and defiantly, cooper drank from the bowl with both hands. he hungrily devoured and grabbed seconds in an attempt to cheer darcy up, overexaggerating noises of content. or was it exaggeration at all? the stew's broth tasted full despite the improvised ingredients.[break][break]

after they had packed their things, they pursued the last stretch of their hike. the sun intensified as the day grew longer, but the cooling effect of the nearby river acentuated their trek across the bridge with a peace.[break][break]

smirking, cooper leaned down and dipped his hand in the river's cold waters. an impish idea stirred in his head and he plunged his hand deeper. the palm cupped, he swiftly drew his hand back up and tossed the water at darcy—but that wasn't all. between his fingers, the tangled zigzag of a marill's tail dangled and as he flung water, the water fairy followed too.[break][break]

"aw SHIT!" cooper exclaimed. the marill made contact and rolled onto the bridge in an agitated crumple. "aw— i'm real sorry, i didn't mean to—"[break][break]

the marill attacked. cooper leaped back and quickly tossed a random ball in defense. out sprung his trapinch once more. the type disadvantage was unfortunate, but cooper was a competent battler—after all, ranch hands needed to know how to improvise.[break][break]

bubbles began to obstruct the path forward, like a delayed field of mines. but trapinch was a creature of force and with his mighty jaw, altair tore through the water-based attack by popping them with his zigzag teeth. awater gun spewed from the marill's pursed lips and cooper sharply told his trapinch to assume a digging position. altair hugged the bridge's ground and narrowly dodged the attack before springing forth like a jack-in-the-box.[break][break]

this time, no clown. only teeth. and after the marill was munched on like a dog's toy, cooper stamped his approval and requested delivery. with a deep grunt, the trapinch complied and tossed the light balloon away. in the distance, it splashed, the only remnant of its existence being the floating orb on the surface of the water.[break][break]

"heh, yikes... that was, that was my bad." cooper scratched his head sheepishly.[break][break]

Darcy had spaced out for a moment after beating the Teddiursa with Cupcake, watching Cooper take delight in the remnants of his stew. He had a small smile playing on his lips, even as the man seemed a little overenthusiastic about the contents of the pot. Though he guessed it was for his benefit more than for hunger, at least the stew wasn't going entirely to waste.

The sun light beating overhead was rather vicious, and it didn't surprise the cook at all when the rancher stopped at the stream, though the playful spray of water that Cooper launched at the younger man did manage to soak the front of his shirt thoroughly. It actually felt pretty nice, though he couldn't help but laugh when the Marill was also dragged along. The fight between the Trapinch and the water-mouse was relatively quick, even with the type disadvantage and Darcy could only whistle. Cooper might not have expressed much interest in battling so far, but he definitely had a way of handling his Pokemon that the other man could only envy.

Darcy peeled the pack from his back and removed his over shirt and the t-shirt beneath it, wringing the water out from it with a small sigh before glancing over at Cooper, post battle. He tied the button up about his waist and tucked the wet t-shirt between the loops of his shorts belt buckle. The last thing he needed on top of his ruined meal was a rash from the friction of wet clothes, after all.

Before he could enter into any meaningful banter with the other man though, a sound from the brush brought his eyes over to see a pink-cow Pokemon hopping down to the stream for a drink. His mouth gaped slightly at the sight of her. Moomoo Milk was a key ingredient in many dishes, human and Pokemon alike, and a valuable resource in the culinary world. Entire farms like Cooper's ran on them, so it always somewhat surprised him to see a Pokemon like that in the wild. The cow drank from the stream, not particularly minding either human, and Darcy approached cautiously. His hand was shifting to the bag at his side, ready to send out Cupcake if need be. After all, they'd had to ward off attacks from wild Pokemon several times in the day already.

The cow chuckled a little at the sight of the shirtless human; they looked so silly without their fake furs on, in her opinion. She mooed jovially, not particularly caring if he tried to attack her or not. It wouldn't be the first time some human tried to fight her, and she doubted it would be the last.

The temptation to challenge her to an outright battle aside, Darcy couldn't resist a different sort of challenge. Miltank were herbivores, drawn to grassy areas and plains for food and comfort in herds with Tauros most often. He reached into his bag, cautiously drawing what he hoped was his trump card.

The poffin was yellow with pink sprinkles, a recipe he'd devised for Cupcake and to try luring Pokemon when need be. He held it out as he approached, letting the Miltank sniff it before watching the cow begin to chew it. The pink bovine gave an appreciative gasp, hearts almost comically fluttering in her eyes at the taste. This wasn't like anything she'd gotten to eat in the wild before. She mooed for more, and Darcy obliged, pulling the whole bag out and holding out a handful of the Poffins as she munched. The cow dug through his bag, looking for more and stumbling upon the Pokeballs. She tilted her head to the side...battling people and winning had been fun, and she hadn't found anyone that could beat her yet. Maybe she'd give being a human's partner a try, if he fed her treats like that.

Which is how one sunny summer day our shirtless, would-be baker extraordinaire captured his first wild Pokemon using nothing more than a Poffin and a bit of charm...
