Route 39 had been wrought with conflict. Battles had come one after another and down Madeline and Hiero both. So, when they set foot on Route 38 she made it her goal to try and avoid them as well as possible. They needed a breather, she figured, and beyond that Hiero was still beaten up a little from the previous day's events. A good night's sleep, facilitated by the gracious owners of Moomoo Farm, had helped ease some of his soreness but on the whole he was still reluctant to fight. Reluctant enough that he took up residence on her shoulder today (as he had the previous morning, and as he'd refused to by the afternoon). "We don't have any repels, so we just need to tread lightly," she spoke to Hiero in a matter-of-fact tone, "The beaten paths of the routes were designed with safety in mind, as long as we stay on this one I imagine we'll be fine." Yet, even as she spoke a doubtful thought wheedled its way into a place of prominence in her mind. Most of the battles on the previous route had taken place on the beaten path, in fact, all of them had involved pokemon from outside of it making attacks across its borders. Thinking like this led her to stop moving to reconsider some twenty minutes into their excursion. "Can you keep watch while I do a reading?" she asked Hiero, eyebrows knit together. The Sableye simply stared back in response. While the expressiveness in his eyes was limited the pause he took before hopping to the ground made his feelings on the matter clear. He wasn't usually one for disobedience, but reluctance was a constant in situations where orders directly conflicted with desires for inaction. Madeline thanked him (despite his hesitation), before taking up a cross-legged position on the ground. She moved her backpack from her shoulders to her lap and, after a bit of rummaging, pulled out an oak card case. The housing for her tarot. Before getting to work she dug around in her backpack for an extra moment. When she had what she wanted in hand she pulled it from the bag: a potion. She beckoned Hiero over and spritzed him once he was in range. If he was going to go on guard duty she figured it would be for the best that he was in good shape and spirits. "I shouldn't be but a minute," she commented, gently lifting the lid before pulling out and beginning to shuffle the cards. She just needed to see if there were any ill omens from the reading she'd done on the outset of her journey sticking around a day later.

Although the girl was loathe to admit it, she had no natural sense of direction. All of this would be fixed by actually sitting down to read a map, but April had other things on her mind. She had set out from Enju City bright and early, freshly stocked on items and with her new Cyndaquil in tow. She'd meant to find a quiet place to paint but all she found were endless winding paths to nowhere. A few houses dotted the landscape, and she heard the rustling of wild pokemon from the thick bushes lining her pathway. Tension showed plainly on her face as she trudged forward. [break][break]
Atop her shoulder sat Nero, apparently unconcerned as he dozed in the waning daylight. The young pokemon had been fed a rare candy before the duo set out for their ill-fated journey. A small smile tugged at the corner's of April's lips as she recalled how greedily he'd gobbled up the treat. Rare candies were supposed to make pokemon stronger, but if it had worked or not was unknown to the rookie trainer. [break][break]
Suddenly there was a snap in the distance. Something heavy had broken a branch in the underbrush. A small noise of fear escaped the trainer as her pace quickened. The small, winding pathways she followed were well off the main trail and as the sunlight began to fade from the sky April's heart sank. "This is it. It's really going to end on day 1, isn't it? I'm going to die out here with the raticates and it's all just so unfair," she mumbled to herself, pushing her way through a particularly ferocious bush in the center of her path. "Come on, get out of my way!" she yelped, rousing Nero from his slumber. The cyndaquil scrambled onto her head and held on for dear life as his trainer lurched forward through the bush. "AHH, WATCH OUT!" she cried, stumbling and nearly colliding with a sitting girl and her sableye. April came to an ungraceful halt a few feet away from the pair, stopping to catch her breath and calm her nerves. "Wait, is this the main path?" Laying out the cards was an automatic reflex. Once they were shuffled and she was comfortable on the ground it was simply a matter of following muscle memory. Strength once again took center stage, the vision of the Pyroar brought low by a gentle hand a comforting sight at this time. The cards that she'd reveal after would relate to it; the test of her resolve it represented. Or at least they would have. Her reaching for the first card was interrupted by shouting, which was followed shortly by the sight of a bike hurtling in her direction (its rider only barely keeping it steady). In one wide gesture she gathered up the cards before throwing herself forward down the path in an attempt to avoid being run over. She rolled once through the dirt, covering her jacket and skirt with a dusty coating of the stuff, before rising to her feet (her deck of cards held together just barely in her right hand). With careful pats she aligned the tarot before slipping them in the waist of her skirt, which she then carefully beat with her hands to try and remove as much of the filth from the path as possible. She did it all slowly and deliberately. She had moved onto her jacket, removing it to give it a few good shakes, when the stranger asked about the path. She ignored them. Only once her clothes looked suitably dusted and were returned to their proper positions did she deign to give the random her attention, and even then Madeline regarded her with narrowed eyes. She did not take kindly to having a reading interrupted, even less to be interrupted by a runaway bike, and even less to having it all be on account of seeming neglect to basic reason and self-control. "This is the main path," she finally answered in a dry tone, "How you got off it I'll never --" the sound of rustling in the grass stopped whatever words Madeline had picked for this ridiculous occasion and pulled her attention (quite readily) to its source. A couple of pokemon walked boldly from the grass, a Clefairy and a Snubbull, and neither looked especially happy. Considering they were coming from the direction of the stranger's calamitous entrance Madeline imagined she knew why. It was with a great deal of irritation that she realized whatever trouble was brewing would inevitably involve her. "Hiero, get ready," the words were a formality, Hiero was in position before she got more than his name out. Neither of the wild pokemon seemed daunted by his presence, in fact the Clefairy seemed tickled at his inclusion. It stepped forward and, with all the presence of a performer on a stage, made the first move. A cry, shrill and short, assailed the ears of all who would listen. Its disarming voice left Hiero reeling, and all at once both he and Madeline understood the situation. Fairy types, of course they were fairy types. "Hiero, confuse them and then let's back off towards the stranger," she was already acting on her orders as she gave them, and Hiero was soon close behind. The Sableye aimed a stare at the Clefairy, and when it looked his way his eyes began to flash. A confuse ray, landed dead on. Hopefully enough of an edge that the rest of the fight could at least feel even. Yet as one foe struggled to grasp the situation the other stepped forward. The wild Snubbull bared its teeth dangerously, a scary face that added apprehension to Hiero's backwards steps. "We're going to need your help over here, crash," she looked over her shoulder at the woman with the Cyndaquil and prayed she was someone dependable for the good of them both, "I think focusing down the Clefairy while it's impaired is probably our best bet."

One was a fluffy pink fairy and the other some sort of magical dog thing. Neither seemed very menacing (or very big), and all April could do was utter a string of profanity. "THAT'S what made the noise? Pokemon are strange," a relieved laugh escaped her lips as she pried Nero off her head and set him on the ground. To his credit, the Cyndaquil was wide awake now, head tilted curiously at the new pokemon. "Looks like we're battling," she shot Madeline a curious glance, and saw nothing but irritation on the woman's face. She ran a hand through her short black hair nervously and turned her attention to the two intruders. [break][break]
Clefairy was as dazed as April, twirling around in the grass wiggling her stubby arms wildly. If she'd have been alone April would have squealed like a toddler and declared the Clefairy the cutest thing she'd ever seen, but the pressure was on. She felt Madeline's icy glare on her back as she tried to steady the tone of her voice. "Nero, let's try a flamethrower, yeah? Wait, do you know flamethrower? What the heck do you know?" one of her hands slipped inside the orange canvas bag dangling at her side, rummaging through it's contents for the sheet of paper with Nero's information printed on it. [break][break]
Her first guess had been correct however, and the flames on Cyndaquil's back roared to life. A few sprigs of grass under him were set ablaze as his body heated up. Letting out a low growl he unleashed a rope of blazing fire at Clefairy, nailing the puzzled pokemon directly to the face. April glanced up from her bag just in time to see one opponent get roasted, and for once in her life the girl was at a loss for words. She clutched the sheet of paper in one hand and let the bag fall with a thud back to her side. [break][break]
Everything was quiet for what seemed like an eternity. April could vaguely hear the sounds of birds chirping and cooing in the distance, and everything felt surreal. The flames finally died down, and the once-pink pokemon was charred around the edges. Fur had been singed off in patches all along her belly, giving a slightly dappled appearance. April bit her lip and tried not to laugh at the unfortunate sight. Clefairy continued to flail, drained of energy and still confused, and finally collapsed into a slightly blackened heap on the ground. "Good job! Now, let's use swi-" [break][break]
Before she could get the words out, she noticed Snubbull starting to move. It all seemed to happen in slow motion. The ruffled dog lumbered forward with a surpsing amount of grace for such a ridiculous looking creature, and sank his fangs into Nero. A shrill cry pierced the silence, and it wasn't from Cyndaquil. Furious and without thinking, April dashed forward, kicking at Snubbull with her thick hiking boots. "GET OFF HIM! LET GO!" she shrieked, hysterical. It wasn't often that Madeline admitted she'd made a mistake (from her point of view that was because she didn't make them often), but watching the woman step forward confidently with her pokemon at her side she was more than ready to swallow her pride and admit she'd misjudged her. She was ready to, but in the end unnecessarily so. The stranger fumbled at the first hurdle, getting confused about her pokemon's abilities and ultimately taking out their opponent by chance. It was an impressive display by her Cyndaquil -- it seemed strong despite its master's scattered nature -- but it seemed clear to her that it was just that: by her Cyndaquil, and it alone. This only grew clearer as the move found itself the be all and end all of the pair's contribution. Without any, even uncertain, direction to follow the Cyndaquil sat still as the Clefairy mercifully knocked itself unconscious and Madeline watched as the other woman's focus drifted from the remaining opponent to holding back laughter. The delay had a predictable result. Sitting duck that it was, Cyndaquil was quickly made the victim of the remaining opponent. The Snubbull showed no mercy clamping its teeth down on the poor thing's side. It seemed even at a disadvantage Hiero would have to bring this to a close. "I know you're still shaken, but --" Madeline had her order cut off by the other trainer's . . . shrieking? It caught her off guard, startling her from her thoughts in a way few things could manage, and yet somehow it wasn't the most shocking thing. That went to the woman's subsequent running towards the Snubbull to fight it herself. She really hadn't misjudged the woman. She was an idiot. A lost, mentally unsound idiot. "Hiero, this is asking more than I usually would, but try and break up the Cyndaquil and Snubbull without hurting this dolt. Can you manage?" Madeline asked, and Hiero responded. A curt nod before carefully approaching at an even pace. The scary face and the woman's proximity meant he couldn't rush in the way he usually would have, but the slower approach had its desired effect. When he was in range for a shadow claw he leaped forward and towards the ground. His empowered hand reached out and under the woman's barrage of kicks, and then swept upwards towards the Snubbull's jaw. The hope was that he'd be able to sever the connection between Cyndaquil and its aggressor without hurting either of his allies. It proved a success in at least one way as Snubbull half leaped and half fell backwards, the fire pokemon no longer in its teeth. "Keep going!" Madeline called from the back lines. Now free of friendly obstacles Hiero moved in on the Snubbull more quickly. The hope was to swipe it with another shadow claw before it had a chance to respond. Instead the Snubbull turned on him as he advanced, closing the distance quickly and latching onto Hiero's right arm with another bite. The Sableye grit his teeth, but pushed on. With his free arm he prepared another shadow claw, and at this intimate spacing there was no way he could miss. The blow separated broke the Snubbull's grip just as it had the last time but this time it hit the ground, and hard. It stayed down as Hiero rubbed at his fresh wound.

Everything seemed to happen in a flash. April hardly had time to process what had happened. One moment her precious Cyndaquil was being assaulted by a very bratty pup, and the next it lay unresponsive in the dirt. "Nero! Are you ok?" she crouched down, beckoning Nero closer and reaching into her bag for a potion. Although he hadn't been hurt too badly, he still welcomed the spritz of soothing medicine April sprayed on his bite mark. As she stood back up to discard the empty bottle, she noticed another pair of pokemon advancing on them. [break][break]
"Let me guess, you don't want to be friends either?" she mumbled under her breath. April stole a glance at the other trainer but couldn't read the cold expression on her face. She felt Nero's warm body curling around her ankle defensively, and he rumbled with a growl. They were both Hoenn natives, not commonly seen around these parts, and April wasn't very familiar with them. "Nero, split them apart so we can take them one at a time. Go after the..." she hesitated. Their species names escaped her, and she rubbed her arm anxiously. "...the pink rabbit." [break][break]
Although he was chubby, Nero was surprisingly nimble. He darted forward, positioning himself between April and Whismur and waited for a command. "Use rollout!" April called. To be perfectly honest, she had no idea what rollout was going to do, but it sounded pretty cool. [break][break]
They'd found the main foot path, but there still wasn't a lot of room to move around. Thick bushes and long grass made it difficult to achieve maximum speed, but Nero was determined to try. He curled his body into a tight ball and began to roll faster and faster toward Whismur. Panic showed on Whismur's face and it tried to dodge but Nero slammed into its chest sending it flying backwards. Whismur steadied its footing, ready to retailiate. Tiny pink hands balled into fists, it struck Nero on his second pass, knocking Cyndaquil out of his attack.

"No!" that had been a bust. Both pokemon seemed hurt, but the inexperienced girl couldn't tell which was worse. "Flamethrower! Try to hit it hard!" out of the corner of her eye she noticed the other pokemon starting to take interest in the battle. April shivered, pulling her jacket tighter around herself. She wasn't sure if it was from cold or nerves, but she took a deep breath to attempt to steady herself.

Nero noticed Zigzagoon staring him down, too. He bared his teeth at the other pokemon and let out a warning hiss. Then he turned his attention back to his real foe. The flames on his back flickered as his body heated. Before he could unleash his flamethrower, Whismur let out a piercing cry. He hesitated, cringing at the noise. Above his head he could see birds fleeing the scene, roused from their perches in the treetops by Whismur's echoed voice.

"What the," April's hands clamped over her ears and she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the shrill noise. It was like nails on a chalkboard times a thousand. "ROAST IT! NOW!" she hadn't meant to yell, but the words came out louder than she expected. Without missing a beat, Nero fired his attack. Flames circled Whismur, burning white-hot. The rabbit was obscured from view for a few moments as the fire continued to pass over his body, and April watched with a clenched jaw. She just hoped it would be enough.

Afer the flames subsided Nero stood over Whismur's unconscious form, chest heaving. Repeated flamethrowers took a lot of energy from the young Cyndaquil. Exhausted, he limped back to the safety of his trainer's shadow.

Madeline couldn't hold back the sigh that followed the arrival of more pokemon. On the other route the constant flow of wild opponents hadn't been an issue, but after the hit from that Clefairy? She wasn't as sure moving forward. If there were more fairy types on the route they'd be backed into a corner more quickly than was comfortable and the ally they'd found by chance didn't exactly fill Madeline with confidence. And yet the stranger seemed gungho to get back to it. The new arrivals weren't here for more than a few seconds before the Cyndaquil was charging forward. "Well, they've picked their target," she commented more to herself than Hiero as she took in the situation. Before the display of power from the Cyndaquil earlier Madeline would have insisted on bursting down the same opponent together, but now she felt more inclined to let the stranger do her own thing. The Cyndaquil was more than capable of handling itself and its trainer's battling style was inconsistent and unorthodox. The more she considered fighting back to back with the woman the worse the idea seemed. She didn't want to be put in another position that required risky play making. "Leave them to their own thing, let's focus on the runt," she spoke with a wry grin. The Zigzagoon was just up their alley. Normal-type, and at its apparent level unlikely to have anything that could so much as scratch Hiero. It posed a great opportunity to stretch after the embarrassing struggle they'd just overcome. The battle would be easy and fast, all the more so for the pokemon's distraction. While it stared at the other battle taking place, probably considering jumping in itself, Hiero came in hard and fast on its left. A hand wave in front of its face prompted it to jump back straight into a hard kick to its underbelly. Feint attack laid it out quick. In a daze it let out an ineffectual growl in Hiero's direction. "Let it know it's outclassed," despite the still lingering grin on Madeline's face her tone was mirthless. The excitement that came with an opportunity to flex a little was quickly waning, replaced by the boredom of a fight hardly fought. Hiero seemed to share this energy as he moved up, recycling his moves. A right hook to the Zigzagoon's snout was cancelled halfway in favor of an uppercut with the opposite hand. A second feint attack with a similar result to the first. The Zigzagoon rolled around feebly on the ground for a moment before going limp. It fell just in time for Hiero and Madeline both to be distracted by the Whismur's shrieking. While the Sableye stood deadpan, unaffected, Madeline couldn't help but cup a hand around the ear facing the pokemon's direction. She wondered how long it would carry on like that until a burst of heat washed over her right side. Another powerful flamethrower, it was becoming somewhat of a signature for the duo. Perhaps an issue, judging by how much of a toll they seemed to take on the little fire starter. "You're better than I thought you'd be," she offered the compliment plainly as she approached the duo, and while one might expect she'd be delivering it to the woman she instead spoke with her eyes firmly on the Cyndaquil. It was an impressive little thing. Full of potential in the right hands. But so long as the right hands were the subject on her mind, she turned her attention to the stranger. "You, on the other hand, could use some help, Crash," the woman was unimpressive on all fronts. Scatterbrained, unsure of herself and her partner, with no knowledge of her pokemon's strengths (its moves even). She would say it was disappointing if it weren't exactly what she'd expected the moment she came barreling in on her bicycle.

Crash? A bushy black eyebrow raised at the other trainer's words. "Why do you keep calling me Crash? The name's April!" voice was cheerful as always as she extended a friendly hand to Madeline. An awkward silence fell as April struggled to find something to say. "Uhm... what were you doing with those cards? It looked interesting," she said finally, feeling Nero's familiar brush against her leg. Compliments made him cocky, and little tendrils of smoke spiraled from his nostrils as he puffed out his chest in an attempt to look tough. [break][break]
Slinking away from the trainers, Nero scampered into the bushes just slightly off the path. They were thorned with small flower buds and would be covered with edible berries in another month or two. He felt invincible and let out another puff of smoke as he batted at stray vines viciously. He wandered through the brambles, sniffing interesting flowers and rocks here and there, until he came upon a particularly strange rock. It was slightly oblong and white, with blue and red markings. Nero sniffed it carefully, circling it a few times. Suddenly it made a noise. Tumbling backwards in surprise, Nero managed to steady himself as what he thought was a rock sprouted a spikey head and two chubby feet. [break][break]
He was very aware of the fact he was separated from April and he turned to flee the scene of the crime. As he did so, he heard two sets of footfalls trailing him. It was tough to keep a level head as he found his way out of the thick overgrown bushes and straight into April's shadow. The trainer hadn't even noticed he'd left, too busy awkwardly chatting with Madeline about the intricacies of fly fishing. "And sometimes a really big magikarp takes the bait and you have to reel it in really hard and your muscles start to ache and it's just-" a twig snapped, and April's attention was mercifully diverted from her chosen subject. "The heck was that?" her eyes scanned the horizon and saw two pokemon rapidly advancing on them. From his place between her feet Nero let out a hiss, lowering himself closer to the ground. [break][break]
They'd barely had a chance to recover from the last battle, but April shrugged. "I guess we'll have to take them on. I hope you're ready for round three," she glanced at Madeline and offered a goofy grin. Dark eyes shifted back to her foes and she got a good look at the two. One appeared to be some sort of deformed whoopie cushion and the other was a half-hatched egg. Letting out an absurdly loud laugh, April clapped her hands together at the sight of Togepi's stubby legs and precious face. "Oh my GOD it's the cutest thing I've ever seen! I... I need it! Nero, open with smokescreen to separate the pair!" there it was. Full girl mode. Any attempts at being suave and cool were abandoned entirely, the Togepi causing her to drop her facade. [break][break]
Feeling more confident now that April was around, Nero took a few steps forward. Smoke curled from his slightly open mouth, and the flames on his back flickered. It was a different kind of fire though, and plumes of smoke gushed from his back and swirled around the pair of pokemon. Igglybuff and Togepi were isolated in the thick smoke. Growling came from the cloud of dark gray smoke, and Cyndaquil knew it was from Togepi. Its babyish voice was slightly lower-pitched than Igglybuff, and he committed it to memory. [break][break]
"Great! Now use swift to find your target!" April was on complete autopilot, thinking of all the cute clothes she'd dress her new precious Togepi in instead of focusing on the battle. It was probably for the best-- for once her commands made sense. Nero obliged his spacey trainer. Small stars sparked from his flames, swirling around in the air before seeking their target. It was an attack that rarely missed, and even through the hazy battlefield they found their mark. Togepi was struck hard in the chest and toppled over backwards. It cried out, tears soaking the grass where it lay. Its body glowed a dull brown and stones around it lifted into the air. All Nero could see was the smokescreen he'd created, and as he stole a glance at his trainer he didn't notice the stones flying at him. Pelted by psychically charged rocks, Nero attempted to dodge. His chubby form rolled this way and that, using a nearby stump as leverage to jump further. [break][break]
"Flamethrower! Focus on the crying!" came the order. April's hands swayed nervously at her sides, anxiety suddenly gripping her. What if Nero failed? What if the baby escaped? What if Madeline didn't like her? What if...? [break][break]
Steadying himself, Nero's fur bristled with excitement as he summoned all his fire energy. He did as April asked, closing his eyes to determine the exact location of Togepi in the smoke-filled battlefield. The early summer winds had already started to dissipate some of it, which helped, but he still didn't have totally clear vision. Making his best guess, he fired a massive stream of flames where he thought the fairy-type was. Cries intensified and Nero grinned, knowing he'd struck his target. "That's enough! Let me throw one of these!" April's fingers curled around a spare pokeball in her bag, and she took a deep breath to steady herself before lobbing it at Togepi. She'd only caught one other pokemon, but she really hoped this one would stay inside.
