Ed had spent sometime walking through the area but so far nothing had caught his eye. There had been a few sightings of pokemon but nothing worth catching at least in his mind and as far as battling went well there had been maybe one or two encounters though each time the opponent had fled. That’s why the moment he spotted the green form of a Schyther the trainer decided that he was going to catch it and if not then at least battle it. There were no downs to trying so maybe a bit foolishly he shouted out to catch the wild Pokémon’s attention.

The bug type immediately shifted in an aggressive posture as it turned towards the duo but it still didn’t move from it’s spot. Thinking that it was responding to the challenge Ed began to walk towards it for a more manageable distance to battle ignoring Its clipped cries and the movements of its scythes. Something he would regret almost immediately as if finally crossing some invisible barrier the Schyther blurred forwards in an attempt to take off his head.

Edward could only widen his eyes and instinctively try to lean away but he was just a normal human and thus already a bit too late. The only reason the teenager didn’t find himself one head shorter was the angry form of Quake using Quick Attack and slamming into the side of the bug type to redirect it. Still a thin slice appeared on his neck and as small trickle of blood escaped as Ed’s shocked and somewhat pale face morphed into one of anger and outrage.

Having slammed into the Schyther Quake was unable to dodge the swipe of it’s bladed arm as it used Fury Cutter. Half grimacing half snarling at the sounds of his starter’s cry Ed bit out “Bite on its arm to hold it and slam into the tree with a Flame Charge.” Obeying the command, the Quilava sunk its jaws into the joint of the bug-type as best it could while the flames on its back and head grew in size to enveloped both pokemon. Not taking kindly to being set aflame the Schyther used another Fury Cutter that hit even harder then the first one in an attempt to force the fire-type to let got.

Quake was nothing if stubborn though and held on until he slammed the Schyther right into the tree before finally jumping back. Swiping a hand to the side Ed barked out another command almost immediately “Finish it with Flame Wheel.” And the moment Quake landed back from his leap he was already moving once more as the he turned int a flaming wheel aimed straight at the Schyther. While the bug type tried to augment its speed with Agility it was still a bit too late in wasting the few precious moments it had left and as such was unable to avoid the attack. Quake slammed into the wild pokemon and kept grinding for a few moments before finally allowing the flames to disperse.

The result was a heavily burned and fainted Schyther. After sneering one last time at the fallen bug the Quilava moved back to it’s trainer. Releasing a breath to calm his nerves Ed patted the head of Quake before muttering “Let’s move on for now eh partner.” He though he knew how to be careful but it seemed he had much more to learn and with that thought stuck in his head the teenager continued to walk through the area alongside his starter.

Quake Level 14 -> 16

After the last encounter things were a bit more peaceful for a while. Something even if he didn’t want to admit to himself Edwards was thankful for. Rubbing a bit at the scratch on his neck he continued to march on with a foul mood in place. Quake was in a similar state so the duo were just a bundle of rainbows and sunshine at the moment. Stopping for a quick lunchbreak to recharge near one of the trees Ed was about to relax when a buzzing invaded his hearing. Almost immediately the flames on Quakes back ignited even if he too hadn’t spotted what was coming.

The possibility of the Schyther somehow recovering and coming back for round two or some other dangerous bug type approaching were just some of the thoughts running through the teenager’s head. That’s why he was more surprised to see the form of a Combee of all things enter his vision. His body slightly relaxed from the sight though not completely. Still he was not in the mood to deal with the wild pokemon and as such ordered Quake “Just chase it off with Swift.”

Annoyance flashing in his own eyes the Quilava opened its mouth and launched a stream of energy stars at the bug-type. Thinking that would be enough to chase it off Ed almost turned away, almost and because of that was able to brace himself better as the angry bug formed a Gust aimed at his starter. Winds lashed around pokemon and trainer for a bit but as soon as it was over Edwards was uttering a command “Enough of this. Quake hit it with Flamethrower.” Flames on his back briefly flaring higher Quake opened his mouth once more but this time flames spewed forth.

The stream of flames hit the wild pokemon head on and blasted it back before it crumbled to the ground. Shaking his head Ed turned to his starter and spoke “Alright let’s just finish eating and go on there still daylight left to burn.”

Quake Level 16 -> 18

Ed had the sneaking suspicion something was watching them ever since they moved from the tree where they had fought the Combee. It was the occasional rustle he heard and just the unconscious itch when someone was staring. Seemed Quake was feeling the same and ever so often would flare his flames at the slightest sound he caught or when spotting some moving shadows. Inwards the teenager was touched by the concern of his starter and was just impressed how much they had bonded already in such a relatively short time. Now if only something wasn’t stalking them it would have been a perfect moment of comradery.

His annoyance reaching its peak Quake angrily launched a Flamethrower into one of the tree where the latest sound of moving had come from. There was no cry of pain but the sound of movement became clearer and a visible purple form appeared meaning the attack had missed but at least had drowned out their opponent. The victory was short lived as suddenly the Quilava glowed signaling that it was affected by some sort of attack. Its own move successful the Venonat skipped from its own hiding place and moved closer to Quake it’s large eyes focused on the flames that were flaring brightly.

Angry at being approached so casually his starter tried once more to use Flamethrower and incinerate the damn bug not knowing it was Disabled but sadly for him only plumes of smoke and heated air came out of his mouth. Letting out a few skittering noises that really sound like snickering the bug-type continued to skip around Quake and marvel at the flames. Amidst this Ed was just confused about what was happening. On one hand the Venonat had been stalking them for more than an hour now but on the other it hadn’t even tried to attack more than defend itself and it looked pretty content to just dance around his starter.

Releasing a heavy sigh Ed turned his eyes to the fire type and began to speak “Okay doesn’t look like he wants to do more then just stare at your flames so just turn them off and let’s move o…” was as far as he got because it seemed Quake didn’t share in his opinion on the matter. Already too angry and being dismissed like that the Quilava was already forming flames when the order to back down came. Blinded by frustration the fire-type ignored the order and instead slammed into the wild pokemon with Flame Wheel.

Letting out a cry of pain as it was burned the Venonat flew back a few feet before firing a Supersonic in the form of a screech directly and unfurling Quilava. Unable to dodge Quake was hit head on became confused wildly turning its head and swaying on the spot as if it was drunk. Panicking he tried a Flame Wheel again only to miss the bug-type completely and slam in a tree. In the effort to do it Quake only managed to hurt himself. Ed was at least thankful that the Venonat was content to just try and recover from the unexpected attack.

Tired of seeing his starter struggle and just all around done with the situation Ed quickly ordered “Don’t try any flashy moves right now Quake instead just stick with Swift.” Head clearer metaphorically at least Quake finally listened to his trainer and just shot out a stream of energy stars in the general direction of the Venonat. A few managed to hit the some what struggling bug and as he watched Ed felt a sense of pity after all he hadn’t meant to battle the pokemon or cause it this much damage. Releasing another heavy sigh and coming to a decision the teenager fished out an empty poke ball and threw it at Venonat in an attempt to capture it. Hopefully it wouldn’t be to sour afterwards when it was introduced to the team.
