cooper was able to afford a slight break—but he hadn't accounted for the fact that his cruise was aimed at a particular demographic. one that religiously wore sun-visors and were above the age of seventy-five. outside, the briny wind whipped by in ribbons. it carried beads of sea as the sun caught their shape in the light before the ship stopped its course.[break][break]
a karaoke break.[break][break]
inside, the elderly danced in limited fashions. no hips. just flabby arms. the whine of an outdated karaoke system was followed by the sudden drumming of heavily synthesized tracks harking back to an era of dusty ballads. it was nice in a way. a grandmother's gurgled singing reminded him of an earlier life. of a childhood long gone.[break][break]
cooper leaned his bulky frame against the cold white railing of the boat. the paint was beginning to chip off, eroded by the years of saltwater tears. only one other person was present outside—and seemingly, the only other "young" passenger.[break][break]
"hi." cooper said, raising a big paw. "not much of a singer?" on his waist, several vacant pokéballs bobbed alongside the gentle rhythm of waves.[break][break]
the ocean surface was tense with a promise; the path of sunlight on its blue canvas was a show curtain waiting to be peeled.

how ava had even ventured her way onto a cruise targeted at a demographic double her age, she didn't know. she didn't remember. and that was the problem. why didn't she remember? she blamed it on the tour guide she had the decency to call 'friend'. well, 'friend' no more, not after what he set her up with. as she stood on the deck of the ship, listening to outdated music from an era almost forgotten, she couldn't help but reevaluate her life choices in that moment. she took a deep breath, taking in the fresh scent of the ocean that most loved, but she hated, and shut her eyes.[break][break]
why was she here?[break][break]
a voice broke her from her four-second trance, bringing her back to bitter reality as her eyes blinked at the stranger next to her. "not that old of a singer." her eyes glanced down, taking all six feet of him in. her eyebrow arced up. "and you, handsome? you look like a singer." not that singers have a distinct look to them; anyone could be a singer! there was just something about him that exuded his ability to sing. she had a feeling.[break][break]
back inside, the next song on the playlist came on and its beat was much quicker. she worried for the hearts of the old, even feigning a slight frown at them. "what can i call you?" she flicked her gaze back to him.

inflated by the earlier compliments, he avoided a bout of self-deprecation. instead, he returned her gaze with a rustic smile.[break][break]
"and what kind of name does a pretty gal like y'self have?" his sweet tune almost made him sweat, but the adrenaline soon breached other shores.[break][break]

[attr="class","runrunpost"] it was the hat.[break][break] his laugh was infectious, so when he chuckled, which made the boat rock back and forth, she did, too; laugh, not rock back and forth. it became apparent to her in the moment that she was stood there with a ranch boy, which was a noble profession, and one that was integral to society, but it wasn't a profession for her. "coop's horned ranch. i think i've heard of you, yeah." she lied.[break][break] debating whether she should give him her name, or any form of information about her, she was thankfully interrupted by the sudden appearance of two crustacean-pokemon, who both jumped up onto the deck of the ship. somehow. "pardon me, coop." her accent couldn't help but mimic his slightly, though she wasn't mocking him. she retrieved a single pokeball and called out cacnea before pointing at the corphish.[break][break] "easy battle, lugh."[break][break] and sure enough, it was. cacnea had the type-advantage and lugh knew it. an immediate NEEDLE ARM caused the corphish to go flying back, hitting the side of the boat. the boat shook slightly, though not enough to alert the older passengers inside. somehow she doubted they'd ever notice anything that happened. even if the boat were to start sinking, it'd probably take them too long to notice. corphish, in a last-ditch effort, used a BUBBLE BEAM, but was quickly finished off with a second NEEDLE ARM.[break][break] she had forgotten how strong he had become. and in such a short period, too. it was impressive, to say the least, and it made her proud. she was certain that she wanted to continue training, continue battling, and hopefully, one day, challenge the league and claim that top spot. that was what she wanted as of that moment. but with zero badges, her journey was still a long ways ahead.[break][break] her current, and only focus now, was to get off this boat. [attr="class","runrunpost"] [break][break] "you have?" cooper blinked once before straightening his back.[break][break] his stomach turned slightly at the sound of his own voice. it possessed the static of shock, but he quickly recovered his confidence. as if shrugging off the throes of vertigo, he instead, found comfort in the fact that his ranch's reputation had preceded itself in the aftermath of his broken facade.[break][break] if only he knew. if only his hat could discern lies.[break][break] but for now, as the crustaceans clattered on to the boat deck, cooper shifted gears. "no, pardon me."[break][break] tossing a ball in a neat arc, cooper summoned his mareep. the sheep yawned and its striped tail stretched long. he curiously eyed the cacnea as it swung its spiked arms. not to be bested by ava's serene direction, cooper rubbed his hands together while barking out a command. the krabby frothed from its mouth. maddened with bloodlust. or some sort of shellfish strain of rabies.[break][break] "paralyze it, and kick it off-board!" cooper said underneath the beat of the next song.[break][break] daisy bounded side to side, avoiding the furor of the nearby battle. a full bleat brought forth the electricity needed for a thunder wave. as the yellow coils of static crashed onto the krabby, the bubbles that expelled from its flapping jaw popped prematurely. the elderly choir down below assembled their voices for the chorus, the chords propelling themselves into the major key. the krabby was ready to meet his maker—but he offered one last leer as the accompaniment soared to its last verse. the mareep repurposed the lascivious look into a tempting target. quickly, she darted towards the struggling crab before a harsh take down catapulted the creature back into the sea with a splash.[break][break] the singing was drowned by the sound of the ship whirring back to life. while the boat began to pick up speed, cooper wiped some sweat off his brow and brought daisy to his side.[break][break] "ha--- not bad. yer not too bad. yer a trainer?" cooper asked. [attr="class","runrunpost"] some lies needed to be told. the one regarding coop's horned ranch definitely didn't need to be told, but it was a fun one, so she made an exception. she nodded at his question. "yes, i have." she knew how to lie; straight face, calm voice, and not too much information. being a good liar was something she was proud of; it definitely wasn't her best feature, but it wasn't her worst either.[break][break] she watched him start the battle with a swift, clean arc throw of his pokeball. how impressive. she watched on as he commanded his fluffy electric-sheep to combat the krabby. first it paralyzed it, then it rammed it off the side of the ship. her eyes trailed the poor water-type as it was flung overboard, even hitting the railing once before plummeting back down into the ice, cold ocean water.[break][break] "not too bad yourself, handsome." she returned his compliment with a slight smile. he asked for her name and yet again she was left having to decide whether to reveal more of herself to him. as she opened her mouth to respond, she was hit by a stream of water ( WATER PULSE) that came from the side of the ship. somehow, defying logic and physics, tentacool had managed to curve its stream of water past the railing to directly hit her. how unlucky.[break][break] with her outfit now soaked, it now served its intended purpose of being a swimsuit. the boat started to move again, and while she was thankful for that, she was not expecting to get wet. not like that, anyways. she turned to her cacnea and gestured off the ship. [attr="class","runrunpost"] [break][break] cooper winced as the krabby ricocheted off the railing. he hadn't intended for the poor crab to be so... unceremoniously dumped, but his mareep had. daisy certainly had. that crazy bitch.[break][break] "not too bad yourself, handsome."[break][break] there it was again. 'handsome.' cooper refused to become flustered. he fought any semblance of rouge with every cell of his being and doused himself mentally with cold waters. a tough and brazen cowboy could not and should not be done by the simplest of names. and so, he tipped the brim of his hat to cast shadows. the cowboy opened his mouth as a response formed on his tongue— but he was silenced as the dark-haired lady was baptized by the sea. he swallowed his words. instead, he watched as she nonchalantly directed her cacnea overboard.[break][break] an off-screen thwack was enough to alert cooper to the successful stunt. while the boat began to move again, the lady gifted him her name, and he offered a red handkerchief in return.[break][break] "here, ava. y'got a little somethin' somethin'." with a free hand, cooper drew circles above his own face, gesturing to the beads of sea water that graced her pretty face. "and before y'ask, no, I didn't blow my nose on it. i may be a man, but i ain't disgustin'."[break][break] below, the tour guide resumed his constant banter. his narration of the scenery was brisk and filled with jokes, but the boat headed into a slight mist that lightly clouded the nearby features. cooper took a second to realize that his offered handkerchief was lifting up by one corner, and he blurted a strangled noise of surprise. cackling, a gastly materialized into its murky purple smoke. wide eyes staring from a pool of black. his mareep already began to rile herself up, but cooper promptly recalled her. instead, he summoned his trapinch into his arms.[break][break] "alrighty then. this cruise is fucked." cooper's trapinch chomped on the other end of the handkerchief after his owner let go. [break][break] the gastly snickered and continued its game of a tug-of-war. however, its large white eyes widened when it realized he was the only player. the trapinch devoured one half of the cloth before swiftly coming for seconds, chomping (crunch) on the rest and the gastly itself. reeling, the orb of miasma attempted to reel away, swirling its body around in dream-like cycles for a hypnosis, but the taut grip of the trapinch's jaws disturbed the pattern enough for it the effect to be lost.[break][break] instead, like an encroaching zombie, the ant lion slammed its jaws (crunch) upon the ghost once more. the teeth tore through the gases, leaving dark wisps that stained the air black. a pained noise of submission before banishment into the mist. cooper rubbed the trapinch's head and pulled another handkerchief from his pocket.[break][break] "no promises with this one." and he offered his kindness once more.[break][break] word count: 489[break]

"it is. if only there was a way off." her voice trailed near the end as her eyes scoured the ship. maybe it had a lifeboat she could steal.[break][break] while cooper's trapinch was making the gastly its bitch, another pokemon decided to join the fray. a piplup climbed up the side of the ship, somehow, and as it struggled to pull itself up and over, ava called out her cacnea once more and gestured at the water-type. lugh looked, and immediately decided that he needed to help. he trot over with a bounce in his steps, and once he reached the side of the ledge, he bent forward with both hands and pulled the piplup up onto the deck of the ship.[break][break] it was as if there was a temporary truce between them. ava could appreciate the cuteness in that, so she said nothing. she didn't have to say anything. the moment the piplup rose to its feet and nodded at lugh, relaying that it was ready for a battle, lugh charged forward, swooping down low before uppercutting the water-type into oblivion with a NEEDLE ARM. the piplup was sent flying, barely avoiding the metal railings as it soared back into the ocean.[break][break] out of politeness at this point, ava turned and smiled at cooper, taking his offered handkerchief. she had will herself not to sniff it. instead, she tapped it gently against her face. "thanks, coop." she gestured at the trapinch in his arms. "jus' get close to it!"[break][break] water slid off altair's dense frame in tapestries. yet, the trapinch endured the discomfort before meeting the duck eye-to-eye. psyduck quacked—and noticed the antagonistic glint of a hungry trapinch's pupil. hastily, the psyduck whipped around with its tail, the controlled water suddenly dropping on to the deck like popped water balloons.[break][break] the trapinch snapped forward and bug bit the overextended appendage. quacking wildly, the psyduck attempted to free itself, but altair had other plans. dragging the duck closer and closer to the edge of the boat, the trapinch exercised a primal practice—one used in the wild while waiting for prey to fall in his sandy pit. legs scuttled harder and before the psyduck could expel a water gun, altair clenched its powerful jaws, crunching down upon the psyduck with a deafening finality before batting the yellow nuisance off the cruise.[break][break] by now, the karaoke had stopped. the docks neared, and the busy beach that crowned the city had emptied. a lone woman was left there, pulling her sand-encrusted towel behind her like a proud cape as her book balanced precariously on her palm.[break][break] "well, if y'need anythin', i'm live at the ranch." cooper said.
