By a small rest stop, various people had gathered.[break][break] Jenna Wright hung close to the shade, sliding coins into a vending machine. It was another balmy summer day. Trainers were sitting on benches, fanning themselves with whatever they had available. Some were pouring cold water over their pokemon, trying to cool them down. The Ranger preferred to keep her team in their capsules on a day like this.[break][break] Making her selection, Jenna had to stand and wait for the machine to dispense her soda...but it didn't. There was a loud chu-chunk, but nothing emerged. Her hand checked the bottom of the machine, only to find nothing. “Are you serious?” Her hand tried to reach up, hoping her soda had bee caught somewhere she could reach it, but it was to no avail.[break][break] “Just took my damn money.” She grumbled, having to pry her hand back. “Anyone else get ripped off?” Some people nodded. “Damn it.” She should have asked before putting in her money. These machines were old. The league had dumped them off on routes years ago to help trainers in case they were in desperate need of a drink, but nobody bothered to look after them.[break][break] She gave the machine a swift kick, but that didn't dislodge the contents. “Seriously?” She just wanted a cold soda. Her kick wasn't strong enough. And yet Zack was stuck with the disobedient fire type scaling his body like it was a tree. Attempts to stop Champ the Chimchar had been resisted with sheer determination by the monkey. Zack was not sure why his Pokemon wanted to climb on him so much, maybe it was because it annoyed the trainer. The cheeky grin on the Chimchar’s face furthered that theory. The easy option would have been to simply put the Chimchar back in its Pokeball, but that felt like admitting defeat. And besides that, Zack never felt comfortable subjecting the little guy to confinement like that. Not on a nice day like this when it was not necessary. But it was mostly because of the not wanting to admit defeat part.
“Stop, I’m gonna get something drink, and I can’t with you on one of my arms,” Zack demanded as he waved his left arm to shake the monkey free. Compared to all the other Pokemon owners here, he looked like some sort of amateur. He tried to his best to ignore the stares and snickering. At the very least, the Chimchar decided to finally comply and dropped to the ground.
“Feel cooler already without a flaming hot fire Pokemon climbing all over me.” He shot Champ a glare but was met with no response except a content smile. Little shit. And as if his mood had not already been soured enough, Zack was met with the sight of a scamming vending machine.
“I didn’t walk all the way here for nothing.” Was all he grumbled before deciding to solve the issue. Moving past the shorter girl who had already made her own attempts.
“The trick is to tip it one way and let gravity do the work.” His arms were wrapped around both sides of the worn-down machine as he began to tip it back before letting go, resulting in a loud thud and clatter as the vending machine landed on its bottom again.
“Does a number on the back though.” Zack held onto his back like an old man, hunching down to grab his prize, a bottle of water. Free of charge.
“I don’t know what you tried to buy but…” He glanced back at the vending machine “Apparently it’s easy to tip a lot of stuff out of those things if you try hard enough so I’m sure you can find something that was worth what you paid for.” One or two people had already spotted and grabbed some of the drinks and food that had gathered at the bottom of the machine after the great tipping by Zack Miles.

[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] Someone came to the rescue.[break][break] Jenna stepped out of the way of the older man, giving him the chance to have a crack at the disorderly vending machine. She had only caught a brief glimpse of his features before his twisted his head; his wild hair obscuring her view. His Chimchar was still clutched onto him as he embraced the machine in a hug to tilt it backward. “I don't think I have the back strength for that.” She laughed, rubbing at the back of her neck before the machine was brought back down. Gravity had done the work, but the sound it made when it clattered down startled some of the people standing around the rest stop.[break][break] Bowing down, Jenna fetched the brand of soda she had paid for, breaking open the seal to listen to the delicious hiss. Pecha Soda was the best on a hot day. The moment people realized what had happened, there were other people that flanked her, trying to retrieve whatever they could–for Jenna, the soda was enough. She had to step away from the machine as more and more people came to see what they could get.[break][break] She took a sip, feeling the carbon fizzle on her tongue. “Thanks. Guess you just fed everyone here,” and she spared the good Samaritan a smile. Little did she know that the sudden clatter had attracted attention.[break][break] From the corner of her eye, the Ranger spied two pokemon emerging from the tall grass. They wanted to see what the commotion was... and judging by their demeanor, they wouldn't hesitate to start a fight. Some trainers seemed hesitant to accept a battle in this heat.[break][break] Jenna knew her pokemon wouldn't have that problem. Taking another long sip of her soda, she stepped forward and fetched one of the pokeballs from her waist. A sharp snap toss sent the pokeball flying, releasing its contents. Azalea the Salandit emerged. She sighed in content the moment the hot sun met her scales. The fire-type would handle the heat just fine; she was made for it.[break][break] “Dragon Rage.” Jenna calmly ordered. The purple lizard turned back to her trainer and gave a polite nod of acknowledgment. The lizard could choose her foe. After a brief moment of contemplation, she went toward the Pikachu, declaring it her opponent.[break][break] Despite preparing to use a move that had the word rage, the Salandit seemed calm. She allowed the energy of the attack to coax through her body, lowering herself to all fours as she prepared the strike. Teeth tightly clenched, she suddenly lunged, catching the small Pikachu by surprise.[break][break] One attack was all it took. The force of the strike and the energy she had mustered was too much for the small electric mouse. “Good job.” Jenna said, gesturing with a finger for her to return. Getting the drinks for those that had paid for it was nice, but the rest of the stuff that had fallen out free of charge? Ah well, they can’t have been collecting the money that often if the vending machines were not being maintained either. At least that was how Zack justified it as he witnessed the group of trainers quench their thirst in the summer heat.
And as it turned out, two wild Pokémon wanted to share in the free food and drinks. Or rather, interrupt it. They must have heard about the statistical fact of vending machines being more likely to kill people than Sharpedo’s, and disapproved of Zack’s reckless vending machine tipping. That was what Zack wanted to believe anyway.
“Do you need help with that- Nevermind.” The calm demeanour of both the Salandit and her trainer answered his question before he could even finish. Chimchar used Zack’s head as a viewing platform for the ensuing battle. A rather swift and one sided one, but interesting to watch nonetheless.
Zack glanced between the stranger and the irritated Shinx. “Oh, uh yeah, sure, sure.” He was a trainer now after all. Needed to live up to the name. Of course, with that quick fight and an audience of other trainers, he felt the pressure was on.
As the Shinx inched closer, Zack retrieved Champ from his mess of hair. Holding the Chimchar in front of him and looking him dead in the eye. “Okay listen here. You’ve gotta work with me so we don’t look like idiots in front of everyone,” he glanced behind the Chimchar to see the Shinx closing the distance further now. “That thing is weak anyway, you can take him no problem, so go!” And with that, Champ was launched through the air above the Shinx, much to its surprise. All the while the fire type seemed to be enjoying the air time.
“Flamethrower!” On cue, fire erupted from the Chimchar’s mouth. Shooting down onto the Shinx below. As Champ landed behind the cub, it charged into him, using tackle. There was no time for Champ to react or Zack to give a command before the Shinx collided.
“Use Fury Swipes while you’re on his face.” Champ did not even hesitate to retaliate against the Pokemon. Letting out an angry cry as his claws tore into the already burnt electric Pokemon.
The flurry of claws was enough to end the clash.
“Not quite as fancy or quick as your battle.” Zack and Champ’s battle was far scrappier by comparison to the Salandit’s powerful display. The Chimchar dusted himself off before going to climb back into Zack’s afro. He would allow it this time.
“I might need to get some tips from you if your Pokemon are strong as that. At least in comparison to mine- Ow!” Champ glared down at Zack as he smacked his small fists against his head. “It wasn’t an insult!”

Her Salandit was not one to accept false praise. She knew where she stood relative to other pokemon. “If you want advice, you might be better off asking another trainer. I'm not an expert. I'm still winging it.” Only a short span of time had passed since she had accepted her first pokemon. Those months had gone fast.
