Charlie calmly walked on the dirt path leading into Route 29, after having arrived in New Bark Town earlier in the day. His destination was Cherrygrove City, a beautiful seaside city that serves as a gateway to Johto for many new Trainers traveling from Kanto or other regions. In Charlie's case, he had arrived from Sinnoh, a distant region, located a protracted ferry ride away from Johto, a journey Charlie had undertaken and just finished. As he walked around in nature, Charlie breathed the air and thought that the air smelled better than in Sinnoh.
Johto was famous for having stuck to many of its old tradition, especially compared other regions like Sinnoh. The relative lack of urbanization and development must have had the benefit of improving air quality, as Charlie felt significantly more calm breathing the faintly sweet, almost sultry summer air. Ruby, Charlie's faithful companion and a trickster of a Sableye, was still in her Pokeball, but Charlie thought that if she did come out, she would likely appreciate the beautiful atmosphere that decorated Route 29. Although as Charlie went further into Route 29, he began to smell freshly cut grass, a rank scent that pervaded Charlie's nostrils.
Charlie did not like the smell of freshly cut grass, and he remembered that the freshly cut grass smell is a distress signal sent by the grass, as they release organic compounds that serve to prevent infection and prevent further damage to the grass. While Charlie was far from an intellectual, he severely disliked the smell of freshly cut grass, and conducted some independent research as to why the odor was released in the first place. Covering with his nose with his shirt sleeves, Charlie started walking faster, attempting to leave the area as quickly as possible, until he heard something move in some of the more overgrown patches of grass near the road.
