"this is the satellitte, er — moon, that you're named after." the professor said, holding his phone out so the small, young grass-type could see it. her large eyes took the picture in, mouth slightly agape. elijah had little doubt she wasn't quite sure what he was talking about, but her keen interest made it all that much cuter. casually, he swiped a few more times to see if there were any better pictures — there wasn't. biting the inside of his lip, he blackened the screen and set it beside him.
elijah sat with his legs crossed in front of him with the bulbasaur nestled in the space between. he'd been neglecting spending adequate time with her and a quiet day among flowers was the perfect opportunity; or so, that was the plan. she closed her eyes and sighed happily, nestling into her own arms atop elijah's legs. beneath the sunlight ariel felt content, and admittedly, elijah did as well. her mood seemed to always be infectious. whether it was her usual tired, groggy-self or the now carefree, satisfied one.
soaking in her lazy enthusiasm, he leaned back on his palms and stared at the clouds as he attempted to discern their shape like a child would.

their lazy afternoon, however pleasant, was soon interrupted. behind the professor the small footsteps of a wild pokemon approached. like the bulbasaur, it too was small; though the thick hide it sported was a far different than the soft, plant like flesh of the grass-type. despite it's non-threatening appearance, elijah knew better than to simply trust it outright. having the unfortunate favor of waking the small starter up, he stood with her in his arms before placing the bulbasaur in front of him. "okay, ariel. you're gonna do great." at first hesitant, a reassuring look from her trainer gave her the confidence she needed to step forward, squaring her small form into place.
elijah's thought processes went to work. while not as nimble as alice, she had the ability to hold her own at medium to long distances. provided a good change of pace. "let's set our selves up first, ariel. use leech seed!"1 her verbal cry of agreement satisfied the professor; at least she respected him enough to listen. in response, the bulb on her back twitched and primed, ariel's center of gravity lowering as she shot out the life sucking pellet. it attached to the ground-type, tiny roots digging into it's thick outer shell. she felt the rejuvenation effects instantly, washing over her like the warm daylight above.
if today was like any of his other days, then the sustainability would prove useful.
angered, the sandshrew retaliated in kind. from it's agape mouth it released small, thin needles.2 too narrow a gap to move, they bombarded the grass-type leaving small, superficial wounds. as the damage transferred, so to did the healing energies. as both parties were surrounded by the green glow of life, ariel's wounds closed while the sandshrew seemed to get some of his own. wasting no time, the haughty bulbasaur took matters into her own hands and in seconds, a series of vines extended themselves from her bulb.3 they pushed outwards, and after a series of quick decisive slaps, ran the ground-type off to be someone elses' problem.
reaching into his pocket, elijah pulled out a congratulatory treat. "good job arie," he said with a smile. the grass-type ate it happily, sinking into the grass where she stood.

unbeknownst to the professor and his pokemon, their disupute had woken a slumbering pokemon. he groaned against the impeding daylight and the loud disruptions that paraded beneath it. emerging from the makeshift hole in the earth it made it's way towards the comfortably camped duo. distracted, the ground-type made it's way unmolsted all the way towards the trainer. raising it's club, cubone brought it down on elijah back, and the professor's voice echoed across the plain.
"what th-" elijah scrambled to his feet, turning around quickly after putting a small distance between himself and the assailant. "what was that for?!" the area between his shoulder blades throbbed, but at least it wasn't his skull cracking into pieces now. the grass-type in his grip struggled, highly vocal and agitated at this unprompted attack. "hey c-calm down ariel," it was no use. she slipped from the mans sweaty grasp and hit the grass with a hoomp. by this point, the two pokemon seemed to be having a verbal debate in their own langaugage. elijah stared dumbfounded, his expression turning sour from the throbbing pain. no doubt a bruise forming with each passing second.
the argument soon escalated before his very eyes. ariel using her vines to emphasize some sort of point, while the cubone's octave rose, his bone club pointed in the distance towards.. something. fed up, the bulbasaur lashed out with her vines and struck the ground-type in the gut1. it doubled over for a moment before regaining it's composure and began rushing the ground type. but ariel was having none of it. her vines wrapped around his torso and began the slow process of lifting him upwards. all the while, it used it's club to wack, throb and smack the appendages2. she winced but held strong.
centering herself, she brought the ground-type back down on his own back and, for a moment, a very tense moment.. he was still. then the cubone stirred. using his bone, he lifted himself back to his feet. grumbling something once more, he walked off haughty and mumbling somtehing to himself, all the while dragging the carbon weapon with him. ariel turned back towards her trainer smiling from ear to ear before rembmering the attack. turning her head, her look of concern and confusion was endearing for elijah.
"thanks, ariel. you're absolutley awesome." he sat down and took time to collect himself.

it was a dream come true, really. he long dreamed of entering the 'illustrious safari' since he arrived in johto. the allure of pokemon rarely seen and the subsequent opportunities to study them.. well what more could you ask for? very despite being done with today.. it was not done with him. elijah's back lie flat on the grass, half heartrendingly groaning. while he suspected nothing was broken, the ache was unimaginable. even worse so, he knew sleeping was going to be rough tonight. "little help arie?" he ached out. the bulbasaur responded in kind, using her vined appendages as wrapping them around his lower torso. in seconds, and with much needed help, elijah stood.
..for all about five seconds, that was.
beneath the foot that held the majority of his weight, something beneath the grass stirred. slowly it rose and, with surprising force, lifted elijah's foot along with it. and his entire body. a hard, groan followed thud later and elijah was back on the ground. this time, writhing in blunt forced trauma agony. and unlike last time, ariel was not having a conversation.
from her bulb she released a small condensed cloud of gas.1 just enough to follow up with her vines, the likes of which soaked them in and covered their exterior with the purple goo. lashing outwards, she struck the ground-type twice on either side of the face.2 noticeable impressions were left in her wake as well as a nasty rash forming on either side — it had been temporarily poisoned.
it responded by lengthening it's body, sticking slightly more out of the earth, and taking on an imposing 'stance'.3 hesitant, ariel took a step back and looked at elijah. by now he had recovered and was watching the ensuing battle with one eye closed. "don't worry. you got this arie." eli's words strengthen her will and she held her ground firm. without hesitation the grass-type struck once more, this time, the force of the blunt force attack on the top of it's head forced the ground-type back into his hole.4 silence followed long enough to determine.. it was gone.
"good job ariel," her trainer said, forcing a smile. all he wanted to do was lay in his bed. but for now.. this was a nice spot. "we'll go home in a second. just.. give me a minute." bulbasaur didn't mind waiting. not at all.
