A BRIEF GLINT of light caught Kitten's eye, his gaze rolling slowly toward the source of the flash as his lids fell over his eyes in a slow blink. Posture relaxed, body comfortable in its position pressed against the back of his trainer, there were no signs of excitement as the cause of the refracted light proved to be nothing more interesting than a slumbering Shellder, its polished shell gleaming as it rolled along the waves.[break][break]

Bored as he was, having ridden a few hours upon the Gyarados' back already, the cat moved stealthily to rise in his place, movements quiet so as not to alert the sleeping pokémon as he walked along the dragon-like serpent's spine, closing the distance between himself and his new potential toy.[break][break]

Noelani, all to used to the unannounced departure of the feline, only glanced briefly over her shoulder toward her partner, her gaze falling back toward the water to watch her bobber sail over the swell and flow of the waves.[break][break]

Kitten seated himself near Gyarados' tail, the action drawing the brute's gaze to the corner of his eyes as he narrowed his gaze, massive jaws setting in a weighted line of distaste as the cat made himself comfortable atop his form.[break][break]

The Persian's eyes were steadily fixed on Shellder, paws gathered underneath him as he watched its shell open and close with quiet snores as it rest contentedly upon the waves. Kitten rose his paw into the air slowly, claws extending and ready to strike as he stared toward the creature with a bored gaze. As lazy as the action of readying the attack had seemed, the speed with which he brought down his claws on the pokemon's shell was startling - his paw reaching to lash out at Shellder in a blur of motion.[break][break]

The splash didn't seem to trouble the trainer still resting at Gyarados' head, and the gargantuan pokémon himself didn't seem terribly concerned either - given the Persian's recent shift in position. Shellder, on the other hand, was quite surprised at the unsuspected and rather unwarranted attack, the thin scrapes against his hard shell showing little wear on the pokémon but the sheer shock of having been attacked being enough to keep it from retaliation.[break][break]

Shellder floundered, spinning helplessly in the water as it struggled to gain some sense of control over itself. Kitten merely retracted his paw, a shadowy pulse echoing from the gem at his forehead to strike at the creature still unsure of how to react. In the very instant the cat attacked, Shellder had found its answer, its shell sealing shut to prevent the attack from hitting entirely.[break][break]

Kitten cant his head as his attack wavered harmlessly against the creature's shell. His paw reached tentatively for a second attack, restraining itself until the Shellder peeked open the mouth of its protective case to get a quick glance of his attacker. As its eyes caught sight of the Persian's readied claws it promptly clamped its shell shut again, though the same trick rarely proved to work twice where Kitten was concerned.[break][break]

For all his strength, Shellder's body was too solid for the slice of his claws to leave much of an impact on the pokemon. Heartened, Shellder opened itself up, launching its body up out of the water with an aim to clamp its shell at one of the cat's sensitive whiskers. Kitten merely lifted his head in response, bored gaze locking with the determined eyes of the shellfish as another wave of shadow pulsed from the gem centered at his forehead.[break][break]

Shellder's body was forced back by the pulse of shade, its unconscious form landing in the water with a soft ' plunk '.[break][break]

Noelani, still focused on her task, leaned forward into a slouch, eyes following the gentle bob of the pokéball-shaped bobber dancing along the surface of the waves.

A TRIO OF red lights flashed from under the surface of the water, drawing Noelani's attention toward a steadily growing shadow approaching from beneath the waves.[break][break]

❝ Gyarados, ❞ she warned lightly, turning her eyes toward the hopeful dragon.[break][break]

The change of name signaled the seriousness with which the young woman was taking their newfound situation. The Gyarados twisted his tail against the water, coaxing the Persian still seated toward the end of his body to trot his way back to his trainer's side, paws pressing to his scales as he hopped up to land atop his head.[break][break]

Noelani braced a hand to Gyarados' crest as he lifted his head up from the water, his gaze centering on the figure now racing toward them with only a thin veil of water over its head to disguise its approach. The gems decorating its cap shined brightly as the sun hit them, a long, grey tentacle spiking up abruptly from the surface of the water to stretch out toward Kitten in hopes of swiping the large cat from its place and yanking it from the water.[break][break]

Gyarados was quick to react, rushing a short ways forward before twisting his body and bringing his jaws down upon the extended appendage, clamping down in a crippling bite.[break][break]

Tentacruel withdrew its attempt sharply, locking eyes with Gyarados as it sent a weak shockwave through the air to disorient the water type. The massive pokémon's eyes screwed shut as the sonic vibration rang in his head, Noelani opting to toss her fishing rod away in order to wrap both arms around Kitten's body, its opposite winding itself around one of the spines of the monster's crest to anchor them both to the best of her ability as he head shook harshly from side to side, trying to stop the ringing on the verge of driving the already short-tempered pokémon to the brink of insanity.[break][break]

His jaws opened in a wide roar as he dove toward the pokemon waiting just a short ways under the water, jaws parted wide in eager anticipation of taking a bite out of the pokémon's soft-capped head. Tentacruel was quick to erect a psychic barrier, cushioning the fall of Gyarados teeth as he sailed under the surface of the water, Noelani and Kitten in tow.[break][break]

Kitten, as displeased as he was to be dragged around by his master, simply held his breath as his body broke the surface of the waves, biding his time until it would be his chance to challenge their offender.[break][break]

Oblivious to the trainer and partner still clinging to his crest, Gyarados whipped around sharply in the water, the pass of teeth leaving a clear mark on the monstrous jellyfish. His opponent wasted little time in sending a jet of acid from its dark body, its cap flexing to guide it back through the water in an effort to put some distance between itself and the confused dual-type. The flickering of light filtering through the waves was only serving to drive the pokémon further into its confusion, his gaze darting around quickly before catching a glimpse of his own tail and curling toward it for another bite.[break][break]

He reeled more from his own bite than the attempt of the other pokémon, his wild flailing inspiring the swimmer to cling tighter to his crest. The researcher peeked an eye open to peer toward the glow of the Tentacruel's gems as it hid in against the shadows of the water. As a stream of bubbles came rushing out from its mouth she turned her gaze toward Kitten, the cat forcing his paws against her stomach to free himself of her grip before taking hold of her by the strap of her bikini and moving to drag her back to the surface of the water. Her gaze dropped as her top nearly pulled free, her hand moving casually to hold the fabric modestly to her chest as she freed Gyarados of her grip, following after.[break][break]

Tentacruel took the pair's departure as its chance to attack, racing forward before striking out with its tentacle in an attempt to grab for the trainer. The sudden movement caught Gyarados' attention, and immediately the monster lurched forward to attack, the force of his body rushing forward creating a swell of water to aid in forcing the pair up to break the water's surface.[break][break]

A glint of light reflected from the second psychic barrier erected by the discerning jellyfish, the snap of teeth to its tentacle rendering the spindly arm unusable. Its intense gaze fell to Gyarados as it offered another burst of bubblebeam to dissuade his interference, inciting the very peak of the monster's anger. With the ringing in his head having subsided he locked onto his target, opening his jaws wide and readying himself to retaliate.[break][break]

The ray of light that shot from Gyarados mouth pierced through the water with a bright glow, passing straight through the Tentacruel and putting an end to their battle.[break][break]

Atop the water Kitten shook his head, ears flapping and whiskers whisking from themselves back and forth as he tried to work the water from his plush coat. The cat gave a drawling meow of disapproval as he padded at the water to keep afloat, his silvery fur slicked against his body. For all the trouble he pair had just escaped, both seemed to be calm enough, the brief pulse of light under the water pulling the trainer's attention down below in hopes of catching sight of the battle.[break][break]

Gyarados took care in rising to the surface, positioning his skull just so beneath his trainer and her Persian as he lifted himself from the water to serve once again as their life boat. Noelani looped her arm around his crest as it appeared beside her, gratefully accepting the lift as his tail gave a sharp splash against the waves, flicking her discarded fishing rod to land against his back.[break][break]

With a low, rumbling growl he bowed his head, his eyes turning with careful concern toward his trainer, seawater spilling down his scales.[break][break]

Noelani gave Gyarados a gentle pat, standing atop his head to lean over his crest and look him in the eyes. Her wet hair fell to hamper his vision, but he gave no indication of his disapproval. ❝ Are you hurt? ❞ she questioned, innocence ringing in her tone.

THE RED PUNCTURE toward the end of Gyarados' long body made for an obvious answer to her question, though she failed to notice it until she withdrew from her place leaning over the monster's crest. Bracing a hand against the surface of her scales the woman eased her way down his neck with a careful hop, walking alongside his spine to reach the injury. She slowed a moment as she passed the fishing rod her partner had retrieved for her, drawing it to rest against her shoulder.[break][break]

❝ We're going to head back for today, ❞ she spoke in a gentle voice, her steps guiding her closer to the cracked scales serving as her destination. ❝ It's too dangerous this far out, ❞ she noted, dropping to rest a knee near the massive bite wound as she reached into her bag for a potion.[break][break]

The sound of the plastic container incited a snort from the water serpent, the end of his tail flicking to curl away from her in a clear refusal of treatment.[break][break]

Noelani glanced back over her shoulder, spray bottle still in hand as she watched toward the back of Gyarados' head, uncertain as to why he would turn away the help. Nevertheless, the bottle found its way back to her bag as the scientist rose to her feet, a hand rested at the dufflebag weighing against her shoulder.[break][break]

❝ Let's go, ❞ she instructed, making her way back to climb atop the giant's head. She gave his neck a gentle pat before climbing her way up to a soaked Kitten's side, the Persian working to groom the seawater from his coat.[break][break]

Gyarados turned slowly in the water, the waves offering little resistance to his strength, even with the fatigue beginning to set in his muscles.[break][break]

Pressing her fingers to the zipper of her bag she withdrew her fishing rod from her shoulder, tucking it away for safekeeping. It just as she pulled the tab to close that another challenger made their appearance, a competitive Mantyke surfacing from the water to glide in and guide its winged body to clip against the Gyarados' thick blue scales. With more than enough speed to outmatch the smaller water type, Gyarados was quick to retaliate, his body twisting sharply to knock the little manta off course.[break][break]

Mantyke spun out against the waves, skipping a short ways off before catching itself and driving in to crash its soft head against the towering beast. Gyarados' sneered at the oncoming attack, giving a deep, rumbling growl in warning as he struck out with his injured tail to smash it into the pokemon's side.[break][break]

[break]

The serpent opened his jaws slowly, a clear show of intent to finish the battle the younger of the pokemon had started as it darted to hide itself under the surface of the waves. His eyes followed its shape as it raced under the water, its body spinning around to face Gyarados as it tilted its face up from the sea to send a jet of water for the pseudo-dragon's face. The liquid pulse broke apart in the sudden ray of light shot from the monster's open maw, overpowering the blast to swallow Mantyke's form entirely.[break][break]

The monster's jaws fell shut as his eyes drew back toward the horizon, body snaking along the water as he carried his partners back to the safety of dry land.
