The air was frigid where it fell against his features, Kevin walking down a flat stretch of rime-crusted ground just beyond the light of the Route 44 cave entrance. A Growlithe, Shoka, padded lightly alongside him. It was quiet. Not unusually so, but he found it eerie, as one accustomed to the sounds of nature. Life, pokemon...
Yet this corridor was bereft of all but the chill of winter, a pervasive sensation that dulled his wits and made him think only of leaving this place soon as he could manage.
But first, he meant to kick up some dust. "Shoka,"
The lesser beast at his side quipped back, "Grou!"
"What can you smell?" His Growlithe simply sniffed at the ground before whining faintly, offering a distraught glance towards its trainer. Her olfactory receptors were rendered all but useless in the dry, numbing atmosphere of the Ice Path. Kevin sighed, striking a pebble with his boot, contemplating just turning back for Chōji Town.
"We'll give it a minute..."
The bite of hoarfrost wore his patience thin.

{ } Derek and his Charmander had yet to run into anyone or anything, causing them to wonder if this perpetual winter had caused even the most formidable of pokemon to abandon house. Personally bundled in layers of clothing, as well as a scarf fastened around both of their necks, they were determined to continue until something showed up. "Zeke, what's that up ahead?" The trainer and his Charmander took notice of a bright orange pokemon, though unfortunately it was accompanied by another trainer. Seemed like they too were having poor luck finding something to pass the time. Finding no use in passing up the opportunity to have a quick chat with somebody who might know better, Derek gestured to his pokemon to follow. "Hello there!" He declared their approach with a typical greeting before getting too close. Turns out the pokemon at their side was a Growlithe, and he had no desire of spooking it by creeping up silently on the two of them. "I'm Derek, and my friend here is Zeke. You two wouldn't have happened to come across any wild pokemon out here, have you?" His eyes and tone were filled with desperate hope. But who wouldn't feel like that after freezing their butt off out here for over an hour with nothing to show for it? "I wanted to capture an ice type pokemon, so-"Suddenly a pile of ice came crashing down from part of the ceiling, causing Derek and his pokemon to jump. Luckily it wasn't close enough to pose any harm to either of them, but it certainly warranted their immediate attention for the time being... MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

Hm? Finally, signs of life in the antechamber, it seemed. A slick, gray-haired trainer and a rather sporty looking Charmander came traipsing down the corridor, waving him down with a brief introduction. His lips twitched into a lopsided grin, raising a hand in mutual acquaintance. Their name was Derek, and the Charmander was Zeke, though he couldn't know if that was shorthand for anything else. His chin dipped in a nod before jabbing a thumb at himself emphatically, "Mine's Kevin, and her name is Shoka," he recited in turn, identifying the Growlithe with a finger directed towards the loyal pooch. She barked once, but remained stationary otherwise. Kevin noted how bundled up they were and pieced together a likely story: Fusube City. They certainly weren't anyone he might've knew from Chouji Town, and they seemed ill at ease in the chill of these caverns, though he wondered if it was fair to judge considering his own grievances with this abominable place... The trailblazing newcomer made an inquiry about wild pokemon, but Kevin could only lower his head and give a curt shake of his head, confirming the negatory with closed eyes that winked back open to lock onto this 'Derek'. "I think they just need some incentive..."There came a racket from the rime-coated stalactites overhead, icy fragments billowing into a cloud of dust as it fell to the ground in a downpour, revealing two pokemon that had somehow collapsed the floor overhead. When the glittering spectacle subsided enough for human eyes to see past, Kevin recognized a Vulpix and a Numel leering at them warily. "Shoka, go-"And yet his Growlithe had already confidently placed itself between the enemy Vulpix and himself, forelegs lowered in a poise that spoke to its agile nature, as if it were preparing to bound forward at breakneck pace on a whim. The wild pokemon, perhaps daunted by this sudden opposition, attempted a disarming flick of its notoriously aesthetic tails ( Tail Whip). Shoka simpered. Shoka's Defense was Lowered! "Use Ember!" By now Kevin was well aware that fighting fire with fire, while not always a sound strategy, was viable if one could exploit the dynamics of it. And yet as the tempered flames scattered across the wild Vulpix, Kevin detected a very familiar aura forming around the fox's figure. It seemed to thrive under the searing assault, rather than succumb, as the pokemon seemed encouraged to strike due to this error. Enemy Vulpix's Flash Fire was activated! There was a moment where Kevin faltered to make a decision that the Vulpix seized, raining a subsequent barrage of embers targeting his Growlithe in that moment, although in just the same way it was futile as Shoka came out undaunted by the scorch. Shoka's Flash Fire was activated! "Try a Bite!" The Ranger would've enjoyed an opportunity to exploit the unnaturally augmented power of Shoka's Ember, but there wasn't a suitable target outside of the Numel, and he was placing his faith in this 'Derek' to handle it for him. So in that moment his attention was fixated on the Vulpix, watching to see how it could fare against his own pokemon. It gave a shrill cry when Shoka clenched its jaws into its foreleg, allowing his Growlithe to throw it to the ground uncontested, the Vulpix shuddering feebly but hardly down for the count. Shoka jumped back just in time for another swoosh of its tails to graze her, tickling at her wet, black nose as she put distance between them. She seemed to sneeze at the sensation distractedly. Shoka's Defense was Lowered! (x2) "Don't let up!" This matchup would have been a stalemate if not for Shoka's advantage with a slightly more diverse move set, so instead of both pokemon exhausting each other until all they could do was thrash about stubbornly, Kevin's Growlithe would simply have to whittle at the enemy until it could bear abuse no longer. The wild Vulpix seemed discontent before its legs staggered beneath its weight, letting out one last feral grunt before toppling over onto its side, its body marred with puncture wounds, its precious fur coat in ruins. Enemy wild Vulpix has fainted! "Shoka, use your powered-up Ember on that ice cluster..." His Growlithe seemed perplexed at the notion, but followed closely to the spot where Kevin pointed; a dense cluster of what could've been solid ice or simply frozen over boulders. In a jiffy the area was kindled with a fierce blaze, revealing the extent of what lie in wait. Perhaps it wasn't much of a hunch, but...Surely the denizens of this place would seek out the harbinger of such flames, and attempt to dissuade them through force. He was beginning to consider that might've been how the Vulpix and Numel came crashing from above; this act should test that theory. Derek Hoffman

{ } Rudely interrupted by the pair of pokemon, Derek was quick to follow up on the other trainer's intent to battle. Pointing his finger towards a certain Numel, the trainer opted for a something other than a head-on offensive. His Charmander's Flamethrower wasn't going to be of use against such a pokemon, after all, meaning it'd be a war of attrition. "Smokescreen!"Within a few brief moments, a dense smog of the Charmander's smoke crept up unto the Numel, presumably causing it's vision to be reduced to nearly nothing. Given that the other pokemon was being 'handled' by the trainer and his Growlithe, Derek wasted no time following up the distraction with an actual attack. "Zeke, use your Slash attack and aim for it's hind legs!"The pokemon, surrounded by a dense haze, used it's Ember attack to try and dissipate the effects, as well as shed a little light in this cave. Charmander, heading straight into the fire, was not very fazed by it at all. He continued onward with his charge, targeting the back legs of the Numel. It seemed to be more effective than whatever pain Charmander had sustained, causing Derek to be quick to order another attack. "Slash again!"The Numel, who'd been slightly disoriented, tried to tackle the pokemon that closed in on it. However, instead of making contact, Derek's Charmander managed to evade the attack and make a lurch down for it's rear legs with an outreached claw. Making good on it's attack once again, the Numel temporarily collapsed from the pain, causing Derek's eyes to gleam with the taste of victory soon to come. "One more time, Zeke! You got this!" However, the Numel was becoming desperate. With the looming Charmander ready to pounce, the wild pokemon gave him a harsh tackle, buying itself some time. As Zeke picked himself up off the ground, Derek nodded when it looked back to him for reassurance. He truly believed in his pokemon, every last one of them...but did they believe in him back? For the moment, that appeared to be the case. Zeke the Charmander shook himself off before pouncing the wild Numel for the final time, giving it a Slash from both of it's extended hands. He even gave out a boisterous "Charrrrgh!" as he did so, causing Derek to feel giddy on the inside. He always loved it when his pokemon showed any ounce of passion - for battle, or otherwise. However, it was sad to say the Numel didn't portray much passion. Instead it seemed to roll over, seemingly out for the count. Derek walked over to the Charmander, motioning for him to make sure. When Zeke realized he'd done well to defeat the Numel, he turned back and flashed the warmest smile he'd made in a long while. Derek reached for the Charmander, scooping it up into his hands and into the air above him. "You did it, buddy!" He tossed the pokemon lightly into the air, catching them and gently bringing them against his chest for a brief hug. They then realized what the other trainer had been up to... "Hey, what's the big idea?! You trying to bring this place crashing down on us, or what?" Although by the looks of it, he was just trying to draw attention to the area they were in. It made him wonder if Kevin was somewhat crazy, or just ballsy? Derek's Charmander, on the other hand, seemed more content on eyeing whatever it was that seemed to be making noise as it approached... "Nah, just trying to spook something out..." Kevin wondered if the other realized that certain paths were only accessible when you knew to punch a hole through the thin sheets of ice separating certain chambers. He supposed the other didn't realize that's how the path originally came to be, either. But Derek was right; it was dangerous to do so brazenly. Yet fortune favored the bold. Or so they often said. Who was 'they', anyway? But more importantly: Why all the fire-type pokemon? As a Ranger, Kevin couldn't help but feel out of touch with his hometown to have such atypical pokemon appearing in the Ice Path unanticipated. A Houndour flanked by a Cyndaquil stepped up to plate against his Growlithe after the embers faded away, and the creature too seemed to be invigorated from the flames. Another prolonged altercation... Except Shoka couldn't hope to beat the other canine if it came down to a contest of biting force. There was a moment where he contemplated sending the wild Houndour running scared with a Roar, but he didn't come here to play chicken. "Shoka, you've got to keep using Bite: I know it won't seem viable, but it's your best shot!" His Growlithe turned back towards him just as a barrage of embers crashed into its fur coat, which prompted it to face off with the opposing hound. She started after its silhouette in the dim lighting of the alcove, pressing her teeth to its hind leg when it reared, trying to avoid the assault. But it didn't whimper like the Vulpix from earlier, and seemed exponentially less bothered by the wound it suffered. This matchup wasn't nearly as ideal... It wasn't very effective... Shoka's eyes flickered back towards her trainer, questioning the plan of attack while the Houndour loosed a feral cry into the gloam of the cavern. It reverberated down the icy halls, sending a shiver down even Kevin's spine, half expecting a pack of them to spring from the shadows. Perhaps Shoka read into her trainer's emotional response, as she seemed reluctant to press the fight, intimidated by the enemy's defiant outburst. Houndour's Attack was raised! The victory would be unsightly, but Kevin held fast to his current modus operandi, scoping out the Houndour's abilities until something problematic arose. Shoka may have just come out of another previous match, but nothing had yet to bring physical harm upon her. It was a gruelling confrontation to be sure, but nothing that their months spent training as Ranger cadets hadn't conditioned them for. Victory was practically guaranteed.Shoka seemed to grow wearier as round after round passed, and while the Houndour showed no intention of giving up, it still hadn't managed to land a hit on his Growlithe. Regardless, Kevin was beginning to question his own shot calling, despite obvious experience supporting his belief that this fight was a no brainer. Shoka was becoming perceivably slower, and the Houndour seemed to take notice, blitzing the orange canine with renewed vigor. "H-hey, watch out!"Shoka shuddered where she stoof, the wild pokemon barrelling down on her with gusto, but she was steadfat against their charge. With a low grumble, she held her maw agape, incisors poised to clamp as the other pokemon attempted to thrash her into submission. And yet it was this fatalistic mistake that finally exacted its toll on the poor mutt; it had given up all pretense of defense just as Shoka's teeth were upon its meaty jugular, and it cried out regretfully as Kevin's Growlithe crunched with such force as to make the wild Houndour lose its zeal. In fact, as Shoka let its grip loosen on the Houndour, its body slacked against the ground limply. A critical hit! Enemy Houndour has fainted! "I knew you could do it! Good girl," he reinforced her bravura in the face of what appeared to be desperate odds. She whined contentedly as Kevin approached her, both hands dotingly stroking through her flocculent coat. Her tongue draped over the edge of her jaw, and he could feel the contractions of her lungs and the drumming of her heartbeat through his hands. Kevin knelt beside her, knowing better than to press his luck. Off to his side, Derek was purportedly managing the Cyndaquil. "How's it going? Everything swell?" Derek Hoffman

{ } It really was bizarre how many fire type pokemon were here in the ice path. If he didn't know any better, Derek would say they were taking over this turf for good. But after recalling the bit in the news about how the weather has affected the region, he knew better than to suspect anything of the sort. It was just an odd coincidence that'd be overlooked... With the Houndour occupied, Derek and his Charmander quickly took to confronting the rogue Cyndaquil that stood before them. "Quick, use your Smokescreen!" As another plume of smoke erupted from Zeke's maw, the Cyndaquil was swift to go on the offensive. Charging forward, he dared to tackle the Charmander with all his might. Only, he didn't. With the smoke in his face, the wild pokemon didn't demonstrate the dscipline to see things through. Instead Zeke, the Charmander, was able to narrowly escape the attack and go on the counter-offensive as his traienr soon commanded. "Great job, now give it your best Slash attack! Aim for it's big nose!"Connecting with it's mark soon after, the Cyndaquil shuttered from the pain before making something akin to a yell, or roar. They didn't seem to like having his nose made fun of, nor the pain that getting hit there had caused him. In a fit of rage, he tackled the Charmander with every ounce of his might, knocking him down in an instant. Zeke rolled back once before digging a foot and hand into the ground, gaining his composure before taking a stand. Unraveling the scarf from around his neck, Zeke discarded it by throwing it towards Derek, as if to say 'hold this'. It seemed the pokemon decided now was time to give it his all. Derek supposed it was better later than never. "Well, now that you're both serious...give it another taste of your Slash!" With the poor Cyndaquil beginning to lose faith, he hesitated to move out of the way of the attack. Instead, what took place was a considerably pathetic attempt to roll out of the way, which didn't produce any desired results for the pokemon. The Charmander's attack was a clean hit, causing said Cyndaquil to writhe in pain. Desperate to have his way, he rounded about and aimed to give Derek's Charmander another firm tackle. Only, it didn't seem very effective. They were too tuckered out to fight... Zeke, on the other hand, needed no further advice from his trainer. The Cyndaquil, who had practically collapsed before him after the tackle, would be easy prey. Raising his claws up in a dramatic fashion, he let out an equally showy 'Charrghhh!' before bringing down the hammer, so to speak. It was lights out for the little guy. "Pretty good over here...I think."Bringing out a spare pokeball, the trainer couldn't be so sure until the device confirmed that the Cyndaquil was down for the count. He certainly hoped so, giving it a light toss towards the target to figure out. Cyndaquil capture attempt! MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

"Nice catch. Cyndaquil are pretty rare, I think," he sounded off, though somewhat disinterested by the tone he struck with Derek. It wasn't Derek's fault though, and Kevin was genuinely delighted at their turnout. There were definitely some interesting pokemon making an appearance in the Ice Path. He counted his good graces that there weren't a plethora of Rock and Ground types rampaging in the absence of their frigid cohabitants. A distressed whinnying cascaded down the frozen path, giving wake to a regal horse of greater bearing than the previous feral creatures he'd dispatched; a Ponyta with a billowing mane that cast an orange glow across the cavern's walls. It would be a standoff another, then..."Shoka, can you still fight?" The mutt promptly barked an affirmative, body worn but spirit unyielding. She shifted herself between Kevin and the Ponyta, the wild pokemon neighing a hellish sound, a flurry of hooves striking forward as it reared on its hind legs. Shoka's Attack was lowered! "If it does that again, go for its back legs!" His Growlithe seemed to catch on, but was running out of stamina, and decided to loose an unprovoked Ember at the wild equine creature before him. Yet ultimately it proved in vain as the scorching mane of the beast seemed only to intensify, scattering a likewise ineffective barrage of blazing soot in their direction. This was such a pain in the ass. If he was going to take anything away from this little forray, it would be that he needed more pokemon, especially of a diverse range of types. "You have to bite it!" Shoka seemed reluctant, winded from its previous battles, but strived to meet Kevin's expectations. As she bounded forward and lunged for a foreleg, the Ponyta swung around and slapped the brunt of its tail in Shoka's face, disrupting the attack. Shoka's Defense was lowered! In that moment however, her teeth were to its haunch, piercing its hide and eviscerating the fleshy membranes beneath to let the ooze inside trickle out. The Ponyta thrashed with a shrill cry, agonized by the incisors digging into her, but adapted to the situation remarkably: A swift kick with her rear legs landed squarely on Shoka, sending her backwards but ripping the wound agape under the traumatic forces. SHOKA!Kevin took a step forward on impulse, the Ponyta eyeing him suspiciously, but he bowed away when he noticed a tuft of beige fur hobble over a pile of rubble. The wild pokemon seemed to show a level of astonishment, kicking up the dust at its feet, whinnying in distress. Shoka approached slowly, a rumbling escaping her chest in a low snarl. Kevin felt admiration, but also a deep rooted concern for his companion's well-being. Shoka...Kevin could feel the temperature rising as the Ponyta's mane swelled in size, its desperation mounting, compelling it to blindly pursue her target. And yet as her forward march came bearing down upon Shoka, Kevin's Growlithe bounced to the side as to make it a grazing pass, and instead found purchase in the scrawny foreleg that so flailed past him. Once more the beast screeched in anguish, thrashing in the hopes of dislodging the Growlithe's jaws. It raised itself upright, Shoka dropping low to the ground. This was the final confrontation. The Ponyta brought its bearing upwards just to come crashing down upon the canine where it fell, and yet in this moment as Shoka descended to the ground, she was as a magnet drawn to metal; her teeth to its rear leg came swiftly, catching the pokemon by its flank as it had so willingly exposed it, offering it little reprieve from the fangs which ripped and crunched. The pale beast jolted at the sensation, slumping over on its side with a thud. Enemy wild Ponyta has fainted! "You... you did it! Sh-Shoka," he tried to praise the Growlithe, but in her ardor she was snarling as she wrenched at the leg still caught in her jaws. His footfalls clambered throughout the chamber as he rushed to his pokemon, dropping low to the ground and trying to place a hand on her comfortingly, but she resisted his pull out of hysteria. "SHOKA! Listen to me," he hollered. The leg fell limp from its mouth, and the Growlithe whined exhaustedly, laying her head low against Kevin's lap. Kevin combed his fingers through the fur on her head and over her back tenderly, trying to work out the stress. "I'm sorry, Shoka. I shouldn't have pushed you so hard..." Another distorted whine, although it almost sounded as if it meant to disapprove his sentiment, but quickly melted into lively panting as she caught her breath. "You were awesome, y'know."
From his prone position Kevin could see Derek was preparing to leave, although he wondered which way that might be. Suppose he was indeed from Fusube: He would ought to head back, right? Or perhaps they were beginning a little journey of their own; it was impossible for him to know. And so he resolved to ask them. "Hey; Derek, right? Where ya headin' next?" Kevin scooped up his Growlithe, cradling it against his chest as he rose to his feet, finding a foothold on the dusty bedrock beneath them. The Ranger crept over to the other trainer, hoping to accompany them if they shared a common destination, for there was a certain safety in numbers. "Chouji Town or Fusube City?" He waited. [nospaces] [attr="class","Vgentempbox"] [attr="class","Vgentemptitle"]approved! [attr="class","Vgentempdiv"] A little vicious there at the end, don't you think? But lets just say Shoka got caught up in the moment and this was a fluke. Certainly not the budding of something serious! On your way out, you found an especially ripe bushel of berries!~ - x3 Sitrus Berry
- x2 Pecha berry
- x2 Cherri Berry
- x1 Super Potion
