melt away,
Clouds listlessly dragged across the star-blanketed sky above, casting ominous shadows around trees and bushes despite the brightness of the full moon. Though they were sparse, each cloud was full and dark, carrying a chilly breeze through the region as they passed above. Most Pokemon, even the nocturnal ones, had ducked away in the trees, bushes, and underground as the foreboding weather promised a heavy downpour at any moment. All it took was just a couple of the particularly plump clouds to bump into each other, it seemed.
But, this certainly wasn't the first time Leah had poorly judged just how far she could make it in just a few hours. In fact, it had happened so many times now that one would think she had learned her lesson. And yet, here she was, slipping down a particularly steep slope of Route 38 and losing her footing on the uneven, rocky terrain. With a girlish yelp, she fell onto her backside, dress riding up behind her so that her thighs could scrape against the unforgiving ground.
"Stupid rocks..." she grumbled to herself as she started to move onto her knees. Slowly, she eased herself up, hands patting down her dress and flicking away some pebbles that had stuck to her legs.
From behind, her Eevee made a particularly graceful descent down the slope. A few hops and well placed footing had him down and at Leah's side in moments. Large, brown eyes reflected the moonlight as he looked up at her. Are you okay? seemed to be the expression he was going for. Understanding the subtle quirks to his expressions and posture was slowly becoming easier and easier, Leah had noticed.
"Don't worry about me," she announced with a confident grin and even a small thumbs-up gesture. "I'm supposed to be worrying about you. You're my partner; I don't know what I'd do without you."
Norn seemed to smile, as if thinking of some snide remark, and then made a giggle-like noise. He shook his head and then trotted forward a few paces. Ears alert and twitching at distant sounds, he scanned around the area. The coast is clear!
Despite what Leah assumed was a confirmation of their safety, the very moment she took a step forward, a flash of color pierced the darkness just to her left. Startled, Leah took a step backwards, hands held against her chest as she focused in on the approaching threat.
The Eevee shot her a disgruntled glare; Are you stupid? I said not to go!; and then lunged in front of her. Ears high, tail rigid, he watched the bushes and waited for whatever decided to rush out at them. Unlike their first experience alone in the wild, he wasn't interested in letting anything get the jump on them.
