The Proving Grounds, Kikyo’s gym, is as simple and traditional as the city it resides in, making it blend in perfectly. It can be rather difficult to find, as it is located out of the way and doesn’t have any form of signage directing trainers to it. It will take a bit of digging and asking around to find the location, which for some may be a trial in itself. Upon arriving they’ll find a building that looks more like a small hotel than a gym, likely because the building once served that very purpose before Gerard Gentle converted it into what it is now. At any given time trainers are likely to find locals sitting among the park like property in front of the building, either enjoying the beautiful landscaping or mourning the loss of the gym’s previous leader.[break][break]
Upon entering the gym itself trainers may be surprised by it’s unadorned interior. However one can often find the local children playing around in the area despite it's lack of decoration. Hopscotch and dodge ball are local favorites, as well as a bit of soccer using goals that have been painted on opposite walls. If there are children present it's likely that at least one member of the gym leader's pokemon will be there to watch over then and in some cases even join in the fun. Aside from these things the only thing of note is the strange transparent platform where the second floor would have been. The section of floor is supported by thick wooden beams that extend from each of the four walls, suspending it in midair. The platform itself is made up of interlocking clear reinforced polycarbonate segments, allowing pieces to be individually removed and replaced should damage occur.[break][break]
The only way apparent to reach the ‘second floor’ is to take the strangely steep staircase leading up. The building was designed to have high ceilings, so this walk can be exhausting for even people in good physical condition. The stairs lead up to one of the support beams, which the challenger must cross to reach the arena. Across the way is a doorway, suggesting that there may be more to this nearly vacant tower than one may first think.[break][break]
It is here that the gym’s leader can be found, Ania Gentle . After the death of her older brother in the collapse of Madatsubomi Tower, she has taken up the role of gym leader in his stead. She may not have the reputation of her brother, but one should not be mistaken for an armature. She is a talented breeder who was behind each and every one of Gerard’s formidable team. She worked with her brother for many years and learned everything he had to teach her, which when combined with her intimate knowledge of pokemon makes her plenty qualified to take up the role of Gym Leader. If trainers bother to ask around town about her they will hear two conflicting stories. Some people will say that she is a harsh and vain woman who cares only for her reputation. Others will say that she's actually a kind and gentle woman who cares deeply for the community and it's people. But one there is one consistent piece of advise given to potential challenges.[break][break]
Do not mention Gerard.
Like many gyms, Kikyo has requirements before one may attempt to claim a badge, albeit a simple one. Before one may challenge Ania they must dedicate one week of their time to assisting in the Madatsubomi reconstruction efforts. Whether that be clearing out pokemon or helping clean up/rebuild is up to them. If the challenger is not victorious then they must spend one more week working to rebuild the tower before they are allowed a second challenge. In fact refusing to adhere to this requirement could very well lead to her using her influence to prevent the trainer from challenging other gyms. Or at least try to. [break][break]
Kikyo gym battles occur in a very unique format. The challenger selects only two pokemon that will be doing battle simultaneously. However this is not your typical double battle, as it takes place on two separate fronts. First is the second floor battle, which functions like a standard battle between two trainers. There are no special restrictions on this battle aside from typical league regulations. [break][break]
At the same time the other set of pokemon will be battling on the ground floor. However these pokemon are to be completely cut off from their trainers. Meaning they are not allowed to receive any sort of order, encouragement or command. The two will do battle based purely off of their own battle experience and instincts. This is meant to test the trainer's ability not just to raise strong pokemon, but to properly train them on how to fight as well.[break][break]
Should each side win a battle, the two remaining pokemon will fight in a tie-breaker round. However the previous rules stand. If the ground floor pokemon fights in the second round, the trainer is still not allowed to communicate with them. It's also worth noting that the battle is not technically over until after the tie breaker round, meaning healing items are prohibited.
