If I can't evade my fate
[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] Route 29 used to be unremarkable.[break][break] As Jenna peddled her bicycle, catching speed as it cruised down a slope, she wondered why that had changed. With the migration, this place had become dangerous; what was once a haven for young trainers was now oozing with aggressive fighting types. The migration had displaced so many pokemon. It didn't matter the region or the typing–pokemon were congregating in places that they shouldn't.[break][break] Her Rufflet kept a firm grip on her shoulder as she rode. The wind would ruffle the massive crown of feathers that he sported atop his head–though he did not seem to mind. He kept his eyes closed and enjoyed the breeze as his Trainer brought him from place to place. Jenna had been busy. A courier's job was never done. From one delivery to another, the girl had been spinning her wheels as fast as they could go. The more ground she covered, the more money she made.[break][break] Money that would continue to grow, undisturbed. Jenna liked watching it grow, even if she had no interest in it; having a nest egg was a comforting thought. It gave her a sense of security. An understanding that, if there was an emergency, she could take care of herself.[break][break] Jenna just wished there were more jobs to do. After all the biking she had done, the Ranger had finished her last delivery in Yoshino. There was nothing left to do but wait for more work to trickle her way...[break][break] “Alright. Time for a break.” She said aloud, wondering if Sterling would be roused from his slumber. The courier had already parked her bike by the nearest bench, dismounting from her seat. The day was still young, but she had been up since daybreak. It'd be best to sit down, enjoy a lunch, and recuperate. If she was lucky, a few more jobs could arrive and fall into her schedule. If she made enough, maybe she could splurge and buy a hotel room for the night. The last two weeks she had been living out of her tent. It'd be nice to treat herself–just this once.[break][break] The girl took a seat on the bench, snapping off the lid to the tupperware container in her grasp. An assorted lunch awaited her. A sandwich, chips, dried fruit, and mixed nuts–a balanced diet. It was a typical meal. Nothing remarkable or interesting.[break][break] She took a bite into one slice of the PB&J, hoping that the wildlife would choose to leave her alone. Her Rufflet, sensing that their ride had come to a brief pause, gave his tiny wings a small flap as he coasted down to the ground. On the opposite side of things, Lars was back on this side of the region again. After several rather interesting trips he’d taken through the northern half of Johto, he was back in the balmier southern parts, this time on the lookout for something that had completely crossed his mind—a Fighting-type! Knowing my luck whatever I’ll find would be a dual-type again, I mean… look at everyone on my team… he thought to himself as he looked at his current line-up. With one exception, majority of them were split between two Types (well at least most of them in their initial forms, as he knew that Gabriel would eventually become a dual-type when he eventually evolves into a Salamence)—while that initially meant he had more coverage, at the same time he had twice as many weaknesses to consider. One of which was the fact that he didn’t have any method to take down Dark-types—and that needed correcting as soon as possible. Either way, he’d eventually find himself wandering around Route 29 after exiting Yoshino Cherrygrove City, keeping his eyes and ears peeled for anything that would attempt to sneak up on him. He then felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle, before a small yellow blur eventually made its presence known on his left shoulder—it was Kaiju, his Joltik. “Yes, Kai? What is it?” he asked the dual-type, holding up his left hand so the small Pokémon could hop onto it and get a better look around him. “Did you see something?” he continued, before said dual-type hopped off from his hand and landed on the grass and made a beeline towards someone who had taken a break and was in the middle of eating a sandwich. Oh boy… he thought to himself, picking up the pace and calling for his companion. “Kai! Kaiju! What did I tell you about going too far ahead? Please get back here!” he called out, while the Joltik slowly but surely approached the female who was eating a sandwich while accompanied by a Rufflet that was cleaning its feathers. It was the fifth time this week she had to resort to these sandwiches–it had gotten old. Traveling made it difficult to get a wide variety of food. She could only buy what she could carry. Peanut Butter, though she loathed to admit it, was the perfect source of nutrients for a Ranger that was always on the move. But, that didn't mean she had to like it. It was possible to have too much of a good thing.[break][break] Swallowing her bite, Jenna glanced towards Sterling. The Rufflet was content with cleaning himself, paying no attention to the world around him. For a pokemon that was supposed to grow into something formidable, her tiny bird seemed too... docile. Even now, she wondered if he was getting ready to take another nap.[break][break] “You're too easy-going. You slacker.” She said with a joking tone, tossing some of the dried berries his way. He happily paused his preening to snag some of the treats. “I thought I'd have my hands full with you.” Instead, she got a fluffy sweetheart.[break][break] She just hoped he'd remain that way. Growing up could change a pokemon... and the life of a Braviary was wrought with conflict. They were supposed to be aggressive–towards themselves and towards others. The Ranger just hoped that by that point, she'd be strong enough to keep him under control.[break][break] Jenna lifted her gaze as she heard yelling, watching a trainer chase after what she presumed to be his pokemon. At first, she overlooked the Joltik–it had been so small it had blended into the grass as it scurried over. “Hey, little guy.” She said, unable to keep the smile from pulling at her lips. She had an electric spider of her own. They were too cute to resist.[break][break] Maybe it had been the dried fruit that brought it over? She wasn't sure, but she wouldn't offer food to a pokemon that belonged to someone else–that was crossing boundaries.[break][break] “Hi.” She greeted the trainer as arrived to retrieve his companion, privately noting how his spiky blonde hair seemed to match his choice in companions. “I think your pokemon was curious,” and she gave a welcoming smile; a small smile.[break][break] Sterling, now finished with his grooming, gave a hard flap of the wings and soared to his trainer's shoulder, getting ready to take another nap; he didn't react to the new trainer or his bug-type. “Good to see other travelers on the road. I hear most people were spooked by all the muscle-heads running around.”[break][break] Speak of the devil...[break][break] Jenna suddenly averted her attention away from the blonde-haired trainer, making a “tch,” as she saw something sneak out from the tall grass. Two things, actually. “We got company. Sterling, that's your cue.” The Ranger gave him a small poke, coaxing him out from his brief slumber. “Go on, after a good fight you can get back to napping.”[break][break] Sterling, without a word of complaint, flew from Jenna's shoulder and circled the two fighting types that had emerged from the grass. As a lazy pokemon, he was quick to pick out his opponent and swoop in for an attack. Jenna watched the fight, not ushering a single command as it began.[break][break] Singling out the Meditite, he initiated with Brave Bird. With his entire body, he tucked his wings inward and collided against the fighting pokemon; a move that undoubtedly hurt Sterling. But the tiny Rufflet reared himself back, shaking off the damage, as he waited to see what his opponent would retaliate with.[break][break] When the Meditite used Confusion, the Rufflet used his elevation to his advantage. The bird halted the flapping of his wings, dropping toward towards the concussive blast–only to corkscrew to the right, right at the last second.[break][break] The second strike with brave bird finished the job. Jenna stood up from her seat, snapping the lid back on her container. “Hey, that was reckless. Get over here.” She beckoned the dirtied flying type with a finger. “Sheesh, I know your kind is used to fighting but you can't be so flippant–that looked like it could have hurt. You can't be in such a rush to end a fight.” The dirtied bird landed on her outstretched arm.[break][break] “...And right after you did such a good job of cleaning yourself.” She turned to the new trainer and shrugged. “Pokemon. “Sorry about that,” he began once he’d spotted where the small but terrible Kaiju had come to a stop—hovering near where the other person was taking a break and eating a sandwich. “He’s normally well-behaved, but I think you may be right,” he continued, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand. Noticing that the other had a Rufflet who’d chosen to land on the girl’s shoulder to take a nap, he smiled at the sight. For now, he’d left Sora at the nearby Pokémon Center so that the resident medical team could take a better look at the injured wing (and get him on the road to recovery). He was about to ask what she’d mentioned when he heard the scuffling noise. Turning around, he watched as the Meditite—native to his home region—proceeded to battle his companion’s Rufflet. Seeing that he was left to face the other one, the Joltik then hopped over to where he stood, before the Machop began flexing its muscles—reminiscent of how his Marshtomp would do it, only with much more actual muscle to show off. Sui’s going to be very angry if he sees this one… he thought with a grin before the Fighting-type started things off with a Leer status change! Both human and Pokémon cringed at the sight of the Machop’s hideous moue before getting an idea. “Kai, get back at it with a Screech!” he began, before quickly covering his ears with his hands—and as a result, Lars didn’t hear the ear-splitting noise the Joltik emitted, which definitely caught the Machop off-guard at the sudden blast of noise. Seeing that it was temporarily stunned, he then took the opportunity to continue the attack. “Let’s get a Thunder Wave on it!” he continued, and the dual-type then released a small jolt of electricity, catching the Machop just as it came in close for a Low Kick attack. “Whoa, get out of there, Kai! Back over here!” he added a few moments later, watching as the Machop then landed face-first on the dirt. “Okay, let’s be a little more careful out there… use an Electroweb attack on it!”The Joltik then began spinning a web of silk before literally spitting it around the Machop’s legs, skittering around and attempting to immobilize it as much as possible. Of course, the Fighting-type wasn’t going to have any of this, and then quickly uses Fire Punch on the silky strands, burning off the thread in the process and standing up before charging forward with another Fire Punch—this time to attack the Joltik. “Get out of there if you know what’s good for you, Kaiju! Use your Absorb on it, and then get out of there!” he shouted, watching as the Fighting-type then came in close with a flaming fist—only for the Joltik to roll out of the way of where he was supposed to get hit before attempting to drain the other of its energy. “Alright, let’s use Electroweb again!” and out came the silk once more, snagging at the Machop once again as it turned around on the spot in an attempt to hit the little Joltik that was skittering around and safely out of the way of the flaming fists. “Good job, alright, drain it again with another Absorb attack!” he added, and watched as the Joltik then continued to drain the energy from the Machop, slowly recovering from the fatigue creeping up on it. “And another Electroweb!”The Joltik, wanting to impress really bad, spat out another wad of silk and trapping the Machop in place. At the same time, the Paralysis from the earlier Thunder Wave kicked in; making things look really bad for the Machop. “Let’s go, drive it back with Screech!” and with that he quickly covered his ears again. Every round he would have an order at the ready. It was a traditional pokemon battle–pure and simple. It was respectable. She always had a free-form approach to battling: speak when necessary. Some members of her team needed more guidance than others. Some did not. Sometimes, they would talk after a battle concluded. It wasn't her style to be hands-on... but that was why she was a Ranger first and a Trainer second.[break][break] With this guy, she could tell he was a Trainer. She could tell that he enjoyed it, too.[break][break] Sterling, unable to sleep because of the Joltik's occasional screech, disengaged from her shoulder and took to the skies once again–soaring at an even level with the canopy of trees. Maybe he presumed that all of the noise would attract more fighting-types for him to prove himself against.[break][break] That turned out to be the truth. Shortly after the Machop was defeated by the tiny insect, new trouble seemed to arrive from out of the woodwork. “Guess they can't pass up the chance for a good fight.” She remarked to the other trainer, hands calmly tucked into her hoodie.[break][break] Sterling already had his eyes set on the Tyrogue that was approaching them through the tall grass. Just like last time, he initiated the battle by swooping down, claws extended. It was not a wise move. While the Rufflet was fast, he was unaware of the versatility of the fight-type he had selected. Without a moment of hesitation, the Tyrogue had glanced in his direction, recognized the attack, and retaliated with a fast rapid spin–its fists were flying and catching Sterling by the beck, batting him away.[break][break] “Don't let it shake you!” She called out to her pokemon, both hands cupped by her face. “He's faster than the other one! Act accordingly! Bait 'em out!” The Rufflet recovered mid-air, shaking off the pain from being struck multiple times. He seemed to consider Jenna's advice, eventually nodding in agreement. If he wanted to finish this battle quickly, it'd be best to just let his opponent come to him.[break][break] So, he coasted closer to the ground and prepared himself for the next attack. After spinning, the pale fighting-type regained its bearings and initiated another strike–running towards the bird, it launched itself from the ground and extended its leg, performing a high jump kick.[break][break] Rufflet, in a similar fashion to last time, dived around the attack and swept upward, soaring behind the Tyrogue–both talons sank into its shoulders, and with one powerful flap of the wings, ripped it straight upward.[break][break] A grown Braviary was capable of flying with a full-sized automobile clenched in its claws. While Sterling was not yet at that phase, he was undeniably strong; stronger than what anyone would assume on first glance. He ripped upward, dragging the much bigger Tyrogue up through the canopy of the trees, trying to knock it on as many branches as he could.[break][break] And then, when he was up above the trees, he let go; dropping the fighting type at a specific angle so it would, once again, hit every branch on the way down.[break][break] Jenna felt her lips pull into a tight, nervous line. This next battle would prove to be a bit of a problem—mostly because it was going to be two dual-types that were both part-Bug. Either way, it was a challenge that Lars was willing to take. “Kaiju, you got this, right?” he asked the yellow Pokémon, before he heard a skittering noise in reply. “Let’s get this one! Electroweb, trap it! That’s your favorite thing to do, right?” he began, watching as the Joltik then ran around the grass, spitting out electrified silk and catching the approaching Heracross. While not fully-trapped yet, he knew that if the other dual-type got close enough, things could definitely get ugly. “Thunder Wave! Let’s stop it dead in its tracks!” Lars continued, while the Heracross tried to cut itself free of the electric net that it had found itself snagged in. A jolt of electricity then zapped the other dual-type, causing it to panic and flail around more. In retaliation, the Heracross then began to cut and hack away at the electrified net with Megahorn, and the sound of shredding silk reached both their ears. Which was definitely a bad thing.Since the Heracross had size on its side, he knew that his Joltik would have to rely on its Electric-type attacks to stall it and keep the other trapped in place. “Electroweb again!” he added, and another web of electrified silk was spun as quickly as possible around and across the Heracross in another attempt to trap it—only for it to end up getting thrashed apart with an Arm Thrust before charging forward again at the Joltik, intent on squashing it completely. Whoa, that’s scary. But we have to think our way out of this! He thought, before covering his ears again. “Screech, Kaiju! Don’t be intimidated by its sheer size! You’re small but you’re crazy fast!” he encouraged, before a loud noise came from the really tiny Joltik. Thankfully, he had the foresight to cover his ears in order to prevent the loud noise from catching him off-guard (and giving him a headache). As the Screech caught the Heracross off-guard, he continued, “Use your Thunder Wave again! After that, trap it with an Electroweb and stop it in its tracks!” and watched as the Joltik released another jolt of electricity—because for some weird reason the first one didn’t seem to work too much—as the Heracross used Arm Thrust once more in an attempt to smack at the little yellow dual-type. Even if the Joltik had gotten smacked on the second strike, it continued to whip up more electrified silk in order to slow the second dual-type even more. “Keep at it! Let’s drive it back!”The Heracross would try to whip tis way out of the next layer of electrified silk with another attempt at Megahorn to cut itself free but ended up falling face-first on the grass instead. “Screech, one more time! Drive it back!” he added, and another loud noise echoed through the clearing—and this time Lars had forgotten to cover his ears; which left him with a ringing sensation stuck in both his ears. Whoops. Either way, the small but somewhat repetitive way of doing things had eventually caused the Heracross to crawl back the way it had come from. Right away, the Joltik quickly bolted over to hop onto Lars’ left hand, skittering in his direction. “I don’t know… can you still go on?” he asked the dual-type resting on his hand. “Are you sure?” he confirmed, as the Joltik nodded. [attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] “They weren't kidding about this place.” Jenna murmured. Every time a pokemon was defeated, another would quickly rise to take its place. Rufflet didn't have the chance to get comfortable. He sensed that more was coming. After the Tyrogue was dropped through the mess of branches and leaves of the tree canopy, it brought something down with it; a mankey that was now crushed beneath the unconscious pokemon.[break][break] “Oh shit,” Jenna said aloud, knowing this was going to cause a problem. She had dealt with the aggressive pokemon in the past.[break][break] In a rage, the Mankey chucked off the fighting type, sending the Tyrogue back into the tall grass. The vein on its forehead was pulsing. It was enraged from being knocked down from the trees–interrupting its nap in the most unpleasant of fashions. If her Rufflet had chosen a different way of finishing off the Tyrogue, they could have avoided this encounter. “Couldn't you have been more careful?” Jenna asked Sterling, who had already landed on the ground in front of her. The small bird ignored her, scrapping his talons through the dirt in a threatening fashion–as if he were a Tauros preparing to charge.[break][break] But, oddly enough, the mankey did not charge them. It acknowledged the challenge, bringing back its fist and holding itself still–concentrating on her bird's movements.[break][break] “This might be like last time.” She said to Sterling, eyeing the frustrated primate. “Take it slow–” The mankey lunged before she could finish her next statement. It brought down is hand, all fingers extended, in a classic karate chop.[break][break] This time, Sterling was faster. “Aerial Ace!” She called out, taking the reigns in a moment of surprise. Her bird, as he initiated the thunderous speed of the attack, had a moment to glance back at her with a look of acknowledgment; in that split moment, they had been thinking at the same wavelength.[break][break] The two attacks were geared to collide, but Rufflet made contact first. The sharp strike of his talons and his momentum carried him with enough force to blow back the Mankey–it had been a critical hit. The mankey's hand barely brushed by the bird, unable to carry the full force of the attack down upon him. She could sense that her pokemon had hit the perfect spot, just from the clap of the attack striking. It had rung through the route with the same force as the screeches from the Joltik. It had been an explosion of force.[break][break] “Hey. That was freaky. You know that?” Sterling returned, finally able to rest. Had he been in such a rush to end those fights to return to his naps? “I was hoping to actually find some younger ‘mons on this route, but I guess that’s not going to be the case…” Lars trailed off as he saw a literal pig-snouted monkey charge forward and attack his companion. “Where’d all these Fighting-types come from, though? Makes you want to question what that radio report said about migration routes getting all messed up,” he added a few moments later, blinking and watching as another wild Pokémon followed after the Mankey—and it was here he blinked again. There was just… something about this ‘mon that he knew would turn out beneficial in the long run—but with the way the Riolu brought himself, he had a feeling Kaiju wasn’t going to stand a chance. “Kai, get back on my shoulder. I don’t think you can manage this one,” he said, before a small yellow blur hopped back up and skittered across his left arm; eventually settling back on his shoulder. A second flash of red light emerged a few moments later, transforming into a Marshtomp, achieving a two-point landing on his hind legs and staring at the Riolu, before turning back to look at Lars. “Yes, I know, he’s a lot more threatening… Kai can’t take on him, want to fight him? Don’t overdo it, though… I know you and your overdone tendencies, Sui,” he continued to his other dual-type’s direction. In the time the two spent talking, the Riolu then charged forward at them with a Blaze Kick attack! Okay, that’s pretty rude, charging forward without… wait, what?! He thought, blinking a few seconds later before pointing ahead. “Sui! Knock it back with your Hydro Pump! And put that fire out!” he began, shifting into battle mode. Bracing himself, the Marshtomp hunched down before taking a deep breath and releasing a powerful jet of water, meeting the Riolu head-on—and quenching the flames at the same time. “Alright, good start. Rock Throw!” he continued, and the dual-type kicked up a large stone at the Fighting-type’s direction—only for the attack to go swinging backwards at the Marshtomp! The Riolu chuckled, having used Counter to boomerang the incoming Rock Throw back at him—with double the power. The Marshtomp let out a cry of surprise as the projectile smacked him right in the face, before batting it aside as best as he could manage. “Alright that’s a bit dangerous… let’s stick with your Water-type attacks. Whirlpool!” he added, as the Riolu tried coming in close again with another Blaze Kick attack—and while the Fighting-type did manage to close the distance, the fire on its legs went out again; which wasn’t exactly a good thing for it. Instead, it switched to a Quick Attack, closing the distance even more and attempting to close the distance even further so it could land a hit at least on the Marshtomp. “Whoa!” Lars yelped, as the Marshtomp was forced backward and the Whirlpool attack was interrupted. “…Sui, no, we can’t use your Tackle, because you already saw what happened to the Rock Throw earlier! Get your Whirlpool going again!” he went on, and the Marshtomp then released another vortex of water, catching the Riolu by surprise once again as it kicked the ground and was in the middle of reigniting its feet with another Blaze Kick attack. The Fighting-type was getting pretty pissy at this point and decided to charge out of the Whirlpool again and came in for another Quick Attack, catching the Marshtomp off-guard once more. Tch. That’s twice already. And Sui’s not pleased… Lars thought to himself as Sui looked over his shoulder and he then nodded, before the Marshtomp turns back to face the Riolu before taking a deep breath and unloading another Hydro Pump at the Riolu—because it was very much insistent on attacking the Marshtomp again. But Suijin wasn’t going to have any more of that. He’d had enough of being clobbered around by this Riolu—and as the Fighting-type was knocked further away and down the path, Lars chased after it, the Joltik on his shoulder hopping off and giving chase just in case it decided to run away—thankfully, with the way the Water-type attack had drenched it the fight had been knocked out of the Riolu. Seeing that the other had given up at this point, Lars pulled out a blank Pokeball and threw it at the Fighting-type, watching as it got sucked into the red beam of light before it fell to the grass, Joltik and Marshtomp catching up to him and watching the occupied thing shake and wiggle…     (hover for level) Capture attempt on Don Riolu!
