★ I've got that lightnin' inside me.

The night was young and still tinged with the remnants of the day in the sky. A large mansion stood out among all the rest. For it was lit up beautifully with string lights along its wrap-around porch and all the lights inside were on as well. The grounds around it glowed with the light that pushed away the oncoming darkness. Along with the laughter and chatter that could be heard inside.

Along the backside of the home was the beach and the faint glow of grills could be seen. The smell of food permeated the air along with all the noise. It was the place to be tonight for drinks and company.

Though that wasn't really why Vash was here. His mother of all people had told him to go. Said they needed to keep a good relationship with the host which owned a chain of grocery stores that sold their products. Oddly enough he came a little overdressed for the supposed ball. It was more like a shindig than a ball really. All he did was take off his overcoat leaving it behind in the rental car.

"Well hello there," a man greeted him at the door with a big hug. "Been too long Vash."

"A pleasure to see you again as well Mr. Madison," Vash said greeting the host who had a drink in hand.

"Bah, Roger is fine for tonight. It's a party loosen up," he patted Vash on the shoulder ushering him inside before greeting the next people through the door.

Vash supposed he should find his nook for the night as he wandered the house a moment. His hand grabbing a cooler as he passed by the kitchen before heading into the game room. A couple games of pool were going on and in the background, four guys were playing head to head in a football game. A few arcade machines sat off to one side; a few gathered around them to play. Then there was a sliding door with the curtain pulled back out on the deck was two ping pong tables one of which was being used for beer pong at the moment.

"Mind if I join in next set," Vash said walking up to one of the pool tables. He was content watching the game for now but the night would go faster with something to do. He'd probably play some pool then head down to the barbeque before relaxing out on the porch. Unless he was drunk by then, then his plans were bound to go haywire.

V alerie had come and gone from Asagi City during her youth multiple times, most often accompanying a pack of relatives in shipping off their latest work to a foreign collector. It had felt strange to go of her own accord, to see familiar sights without the family around. It was actually a little thrilling, truth be told.

Winding up on the porch of the mansion hadn't been part of her plans that morning, but Valerie had opted to go along with the flow; it involved a dance practice on the beach nearby and an inebriated group of young people begging her to go along with them to a nearby party that night. The loose group of twenty somethings had taken to calling her 'Butterfly' without even asking her name and the young woman had yet to correct them.

She wore her usual modified kimono, which drew eyes to her like moths to a flame when nearly everyone else had opted for beach casual for the night. It added to her mystery, or at least that was what Valerie hoped for. She didn't feel completely out of place in the mansion setting, laughing along with the jokes of the group who'd heralded her inside. Her family wasn't poor or even working class by any means thanks to their level of fame in traditional fashion, yet the amount of wealth the mansion spoke of made the whole family operation back in Enju seem modest by comparison. Grandmother would've loved the thought, of that Valerie was certain. She excused herself from the group who had enfolded her and grown into a swell with a laugh, promising a dance or poem later if they behaved themselves.

At least it bought her time away from them, though she was hardly inconspicuous as it were. Some people would focus on the material possessions that reeked of wealth scattered around the mansion or the smell of food but Valerie's favorite pastime in that kind of scenario, people watching, suited her far better. Her wide grey eyes scanned the swell of bodies moving about the place, sarongs and half open shirts and light casual fabrics as far as she could see until finally she settled on someone else who appeared overdressed simply by the merit of his shoes and the cut of his clothes. He was lurking by the pool tables, probably waiting for the next game.

The game room would have hardly been Valerie's first choice of place to lurk, but to each their own. She noted the arcade games, her thinly plucked eyebrow dancing upwards when one of the guys playing one missed a shot as she passed. She suppressed a giggle at the sight, drawing one of her voluminous sleeves in front of her face. As she neared the man in the dress shirt though, another woman in the game room, possibly the girlfriend of the guy who just missed his shoot, began to talk overly loud.

"Like, who let a freak like that into the party?" The overly tanned young woman was wearing a designer blouse loosely over a bathing suit, and her sandals were studded with stones that if they were real would've cost most than the material of her entire outfit. "Do you like, see her? And she's even trying to snag a guy now." The girl's laugh was brash and loud, "If I were a gold digger I'd at least try to look the part."

Valerie's approach stopped short of the pool table and her eyes flickered to the side where the group stood. She turned, her sleeve in front of her mouth; it was a mannerism she'd picked up from spending so much time around the kimono girls as a child. "I suppose you already know how to look the part, don't you darling?"

The arcade game group fell silent before one of the men started howling with laughter which set the group off. Even underneath her tan, Valerie's critic burned hot with shame. She felt a pang of remorse for her critic, mostly because the "friends" she was with were so quick to turn on her when it was convenient.

Vash's attention was turned away from the pool tables as the place became deathly quiet at a young woman's retort. She was dressed in a kimono which was an odd dress for the evening. Though then again so was he. He pondered what to do the woman she had shamed was burning red so there was no need to back her up really.

"I do believe that is the current trend for beauty," Vash said in response partially defending the critic though she started it. It just wouldn't feel right to gang up on her though he had to agree. She was too fake both in appearance and attitude. Vash reached out for the girl in the kimono offering to escort her away from the room. Something told him it wouldn't be wise to stay.

Not just because of possible bickering but he knew women all too well. His mother and sister showed him the worst side growing up. He knew the catty nature of those who put beauty above all else. It would be best to prevent a fight now rather than let it go on.

"It's pointless to fight," Vash said regardless if she let him escort her away or not.

His plan to play pool was a bit ruined but he didn't really mind. Parties weren't really his scene and he wouldn't have even been here if not for his mother's command. Even after leaving the house he feared her wrath even though the worse she could do was call and shout at him for three hours straight. He didn't even dare hang up on her in case she showed up at his door. The thought a chilling one.

"Vash Parker," he said introducing himself to the woman. The cut of her kimono reminded him of the kimono girls. It was definitely high quality not something a machine could produce. There was no need for this woman to be a gold digger she was already rich by her clothes alone.

When Frederick learned of the ball that was to take place while he happened to be in Asagi he immediately made plans to attend. It was for reasons exactly like this that he always traveled in with his nice clothes, as one could never be sure when he would have an opportunity to dress up nice. Yet upon arrival he would find that he was in fact very overdressed for the occasion, as the party seemed to be far more casual than he expected. Fortunately it wasn't hard to shift into his normal style. He simply put his white gloves and bowtie in his pocket and stashed his jacket and vest in the closet, which essentially left him with his usual clothing anyway.

Despite not being invited to the festivities Frederick would quickly make himself at home, chatting it up with fellow party goers at the beach and blending right in. He had to be careful to dodge questions regarding who he knew here or who invited him, but it was nothing he wasn't used to. Luckily by the time he arrived the crowd was generally just inebriated enough to make them just a bit more pliable. The uninvited ranger planted himself near the grills, making casual conversation with anyone who happened to pass by. While the people themselves weren't too interesting to the man the whole event at least served as a good way to sharpen his social skills.

An uproar of laughter would catch the man's attention, peering through the window into the room. There he would see a familiar face addressing the crowd, causing the man's yellow eyes to widen with excitement. The dark skinned ranger abruptly excused himself from his current conversation and started to make his way toward Vash. He had to brush through the crowd, uttering polite yet insincere apologies as he forced his way through. Eyes lingered on a certain heavily tanned girl whose cheeks were still burning bright red, his lips curling into an amused smile as he looked away and continued forward.

It wasn't long before he would find himself standing directly behind Vash and Valerie, revealing his presence with the soft laugh that slipped through his lips. "Well well. It seems you two have made quite the impression on the crowd here. Very nice." The man looked down at shorter pair, his clothes smelling strongly of the barbecue he was previously loitering near. "And such striking appearances! Surely you two are the most interesting people in this whole party. I knew I would regret not greeting you two, so I decided to rush over and make your acquaintance." He shot a knowing glance toward Vash, his eyes lingering there for a moment before turning to look at Val. Frederick had only seen pictures of the man, but he was well aware of Vash Parker and the role he would play in the future.

"Now tell me. To whom do I owe the pleasure?"

T he tall man she'd been so curious about offered a small defense for the girl who picked the fight, though by his tone Valerie guessed he was merely trying to avoid any more theatrics between the two. When he offered to escort her outside, mentioning the futility of a fight, Valerie had to agree to it mentally, following him away from the rabble and the roar of laughter. She mused on his earlier statement briefly, "Current trends are always changing, and beauty's subject to the eye of beholder, wouldn't you say?"

He introduced himself as Vash Parker and the name struck her suddenly, but before she could truly react another man approached them, commenting on their impact on the party thus far. This dark skinned stranger was older than Valerie and Vash, taller too. She couldn't help but offer him a coy smile, halfway between some act of politeness and genuine intrigue. Unlike her detractor earlier, this man could at least recognize the cut of her cloth, even if the designs she implemented in her daily wear transformed the kimono into something a cosplayer from Kogane City might wear in the fashion districts.

She'd leave introducing himself to the other man to Vash, though she owed both her name. Valerie was always hesitant to throw around her family name, considering some of the weight it carried to those with a finger on the pulse of the fashion world. Still, in that moment the girl didn't feel comfortable omitting it in the off chance more people would assume she was merely there to bag a man like some common trollop. The giggle that escaped her mouth may have had a tinge of nerves, but the thrill of the night's events still clung to her. Besides, she was speaking with the son of one of her family's more valued foreign clients after all. Tall, dark, and handsome over there was just a bonus.

"Well gentleman, I've been trying to remain a little mysterious tonight but you've got me." She offered a small formal bow, practiced from her time with the kimono girls during her childhood. "Valerie Shimizu, granddaughter of Enki and member of the House of Shimizu."

The Shimizu Household was considered a national treasure by some Johto elitists for their traditional kimono production and ability to innovate and craft the classical garments in the modern era. The fact that Valerie bore a Kalosian first name was a bit odd, to be true, but she'd handled the family's social media accounts to help the design house remain in the spotlight of the fashion world long enough for people to be at least aware of her father's contributions to them. A foreigner marrying into the family and bringing new techniques had seemed sacrilege for some, but the combination of Valerie's parents as a design team had sold multiple kimono to the elite of the world, including Vash's mother over the years. Though her grandparents insisted on investing in the business and living a modest lifestyle on the family's estate that housed the workshop, the share of the money her parents received had allowed them ample funds for a side business in Kogane real estate that kept the bank accounts flush regardless of the fashion season's whims.

She'd struck out on her own for the journey to escape a bit of the family's austerity, purposely avoiding using her last name in her personal social media where she'd been trying to strike up a fan base for her design work and performances. Valerie couldn't deny her upbringing with her family had allowed her to grow as an artist, but she wanted to prove her mettle and merit on her own without the weight of her name. It was perhaps something that Vash could relate to?

Vash had to agree the current trend wasn't to his taste at all. Though his tastes and beauty didn't always go hand in hand. He was about to respond to her inquiry when he was suddenly startled. The laugh right behind them making his heart pound just a bit though he didn't visibly jump.

Did he know this man? It seemed like his gaze lingered a bit too much. Though then again he probably had just caught onto the fact he startled him and was amused. Just a bit embarrassing to say the least.

"Vash Parker," Vash said after Valerie looking at the man. "I thought the cut was similar but not the same. My mother uses the Shimizu family whenever she does traditional weddings." Ah, it wouldn't be fair for her to reveal all while leaving himself in the dark.

It seemed odd to run into another household his mother tried to keep good relations with. Which meant he had to be on his best behavior not only to keep relations with the grocery store owner but the Shimizu family as well. The party was certainly turning into a chore for him. Part of him wishing she had sent his sister though he just knew that would have been ten times worse.

"Third son to the Parker family who currently runs Five Star Orchards. My mother is a wedding planner," Vash explained before looking to the man who'd asked their names. He was handsome and smelled of food which wasn't exactly unpleasant. A beautiful girl, a handsome man, and him needless to say he was sure they stuck out like a sore thumb.

So, the stunning young lady was of the Shimizu family. That certainly explained her exquisite attire. As a man who took great interest in the fashion world, even if he often chose not to dress the part, was most certainly familiar with the family. Though his personal style wasn't quite as traditional as the designs they produced he couldn't deny the talent and beauty that encompassed their pieces. "It's an honor to meet you Ms. Shimizu. His tone was more respectful and genuine than flirtatious, but he would still toss a playful wink to the young lady. This was a party, after all.

Attention would turn to Vash, a man that he was already all too familiar with. Yet he would feign ignorance, his brows raising as he bobbed his head in acknowledgement. "My, I never expected to find myself in the company of such distinguished families. Truly this is a humbling experience." Frederick would offer Vash a bow as well, his shoulders shaking slightly as he silently chuckled to himself. It truly was interesting to rub shoulders with influential families of the region, especially considering his humble beginnings. It was funny just to think about how different his upbringing must have been compared to the other two. "It truly is an honor and a pleasure to meet the both of you. Come, let us grab drinks so you can tell me more about yourselves. Surely you both have-"

A distant scream interrupted the ranger's words, causing him to quickly spin on his heels and face the source of the noise. It didn't take long to assess the situation and spot one of the first krabby to reveal themselves. One after another the crustations would make themselves known, pincers clicking together as they frothed at their mouths and went about wreaking havoc on the party. "Drinks will have to wait." There was a hint of irritation in the man's voice as he reached for his belt, the relaxation fading from his joy as a a mixture of joy and intensity took over his features. It seemed that someone was disturbing the peace.And the man was foolish enough to let himself be known.

Frederick flicked his wrist to unleash his ampharos, the pokemon immediately scanning the party with a distant and haughty expression. "Wooly, clear the way of krabbys. We're going to pay the Krabman a visit." Golden eyes shot back to Vash and Valerie, his gaze lingering on the other ranger for a moment before moving to the girl. "I need you to minimize the damage if possible. If Ms. Shimizu doesn't have pokemon of her own then it's up to you to protect her." With that the ranger would sprint off toward the beach, an arm shooting out to snatch a ladle from one of the punch bowls along his path to the beach. Wooly would move to keep in front of him.

Along the way a particularly crabby krabby would jump at the pair, aiming to grab the trainer in it's vice grip. However the weaker pokemon was too slow for the ampharos, would would quickly discharge a thundershock into the water type, immediately causing it to fall back and lay unconscious on the ground. Frederick didn't even bat an eye at this, his gaze locked firmly on the Krabman that seemed to be the source of all this havoc. Unfortunately there was still a ways between himself and his target, so the dark skinned ranger would have to stay alert of his surroundings in case any surprises decided to show their ugly heads.
