[attr="class","pwfbody"]"two coffee's please," he said smiling as the woman approached his table, asking for his order. she gave him a sort of puzzling look that lasted for a second before she smiled and left to prepare it. it didn't go unnoticed on the professor. the normal-type lie at his feet snuggled up to and nearly around his ankles. he wore his white lab like coat as he waited. eyes descended upon the allure of the ocean outside. eli, so absorbed in a memory, didn't even notice the waitress had come and gone, two fresh coffee's waiting idly by on the tablecloth.[break][break]
[break][break]
8 months earlier....[break][break]
[break][break]
the two sat at their favorite spot. a ma and pop coffee shop that overlooked the waters edge. above them they could make out the ends of the roof and the endless sky above it. unlike them, it was not confined.[break][break]
"mom says you've almost graduated?" he took a sip of the coffee, his face turning sour as he reached for more sugar.[break][break]
the girl across from him scrunched her face a bit. "yeah, a couple months. it's cool i guess." she was shorter than eli. younger too. a whole decade younger.[break][break]
he read her face and could tell something was up. he could always tell. "woah now, don't sound too excited. what's going on?"[break][break]
she looked at him and sighed. not the sigh of someone horribly depressed or even at her wits end. eli set down his cup. "i dont know.. just want it to be over, y'know? this stuff is lame. i wanna go out there and really get my hands dirty." the girl poured three sugars into her drink, stirring it and taking a sip.[break][break]
elijah laughed, a real, genuine laugh. "oh, yeah, i know. trust me, i just got done with it all myself." he was of course referring to the fact he just graduated with his degree. he was officially a professor now. finally done in school at 26. it was crazy.[break][break]
"i dunno how you did it," she leaned back into her seat looking exhausted. "just thinking about all of that makes me tired." Eli laughed again. "what're you gonna do now, though?"[break][break]
he pondered for a sec, turning his attention to the incoming waves. "not sure. i've thought about it a little. i was thinking of travelling the world, documenting everything i can about pokemon. but I'm not sure yet. 'sides, who's gonna look after you?" he reached over the table and ran his hand annoyingly through her hair. her face said it all and eli laughed.[break][break]
she moved his hand, struggling under his strength. "yea right. you think a future champion needs anyone looking after her?" her smirk clearly showed she had a lot of confidence in herself. "dont answer that either lijah!" she exclaimed revealing her mistake. she was the only person allowed to call him that. her rules.[break][break]
"that reminds me, what did she say?" her confused look was all he got in return. "you know, about the Pokemon?"[break][break]
"oh!" her face looked alive. "mom said i could get one from one of the shelters. and i know which one i want, too!" without even asking him she turned to her phone, devilishly going through her gallery. "the guy said she's a runt of the litter," the small meowth appeared lonelier than the others; smaller, too. "i already named her too. i'm thinking alice. what do you think?"[break][break]
eli smiled soflty and leaned back. "such a sap. after your favorite story no less, too." right as she was about to yell at him for something, he continued. "i think it's a great name though. really fitting."[break][break]
"of course it's fitting! you're looking at the first addition to my team of champions!" she spent the next several moments going through other photos of Pokemon she wanted to catch as well. aside from a question or two, eli didn't interrupt. her passion and drive were one of a kind and elijah loved every second of it.[break][break]
"oh, i almost forgot lijah." rummaging around for a few moments in her purse, she brought out a wrapped box with a bow. "a gift for your graduation!" her smile was infectious.[break][break]
"c'mon, you didn't have to do that." he peered the box over but couldn't remotely tell what it was.[break][break]
"oh just open it already. you know you're dying to see." she too could read him like a book. [break][break]
with eager hands, careful but meticulously he opened the wrapping and undid the bow. lifting the top up he was stunned. inside was a custom made jacket, white, long, and with all the makings of the ones real professionals had. "this it too much, cl-"[break][break]
she interrupted him with a laugh. "nonsense! only the best for my brother." as he stood and unfolded it, she couldn't contain her excitement. "come on, try it on!"[break][break]
elijah did so, one arm through a sleeve at a time. in the reflection of the glass he could see properly there were letters written on the back in a language he didn't understand. half reaching back to touch it, he arched his neck to get a better look.[break][break]
"say cheese!" she snapped a photo and sent it to him.[break][break]
"e-eh? you know i'm not photogenic!" his whine was interrupted by her laugh, and his own smile. "what's it mean anyways? the lettering?"[break][break]
she typed a few things into her phone before showing him the translation. "its our family name. it means gray." [break][break]
"thank you, really. this means a lot. i'll wear it always and think of you, okay?"[break][break]
she sat into her chair the right way again. "oh don't get all sappy on me. you'll enough of me on tv once i become champion." there she went with that infectious smile and energy again.[break][break]
"yeah, and what a sad day that will be for everyone having to tune in." he rolled his eyes playfully, taking another sip of coffee. though he didn't show it, eli was almost impossibly careful not to spill.[break][break]
"wanna say that aga- ugh," she stopped her hand reaching up to her forehead. another headache.[break][break]
"mom also said you've been getting a lot of those lately. everything okay?" he tried to read her face as he asked, concerned like only a big brother would be.[break][break]
"yeah, probably just need to drink more water." she took her hand down and looked around. "wanna bail? dine and ditch?" her voice quieted.[break][break]
eli smiled. still the same old girl he knew. "hm..okay then. on the count of 3, okay?" she nodded. "1... 2...3" she was off like a zubat out of hell. reaching into his pocket he threw a $20 down and raced after her. when he caught up to her he threw his arm over her shoulder.[break][break]
"want some ice cream? i'm buying."[break][break]
"i dont get you sometimes lijah. why do you even need to ask?" their laughter followed them all the way down the street and further.[break][break]
[break][break]
Present day....[break][break]
[break][break]
only a trace amount of cold coffee remained in his cup now, long ago finishing the caffeine induced liquid. across from him, the drink remained untouched other than a few packs of sugar laying next to it -- three, to be exact. he stared at a picture on his phone for a moment before standing to leave, alice quickly on his heel.[break][break]
once out the door the waitress would find a $20 bill sitting in the center of the table.
