big's line bobbed ever-the-slightest. despite his fisherman mastery, which bestowed upon him the ability to excel at catching quote unquote 'fish pokemon', he didn't notice.
he instead noticed a riolu coming up to him. he'd never seen the pokemon, but he figured it had to be a pokemon with the lack of evidence that a 2 foot tall thief-masked person with thick hips was randomly approaching him. you had to go to specific places to find that very niche content, he figured, whereas pokemon were everywhere, uninvited, all the time.
wingull continued to fly in concentric circles, mastering a flight pattern that was useless and unnoticeable except to betray that, for a small bird, it had some grasp on elementary geometry.
big's bobber bobbed as bobbers were liable to do, but he was occupied by turning to look at the man that backed up the bluish creature.
i'm a fucking dumbass hung in the air, hundreds of facsimiles in his head, handed out like fliers or mixtapes outside of record stores.
this red-haired man was being very kind. offering a pick-me up. surely that riolu didn't have an opinion one way or another and this was what might be called an 'ice breaker.' you see someone down on their luck and you're just a little too pessimistic to be that optimistic, kind person that lifts them up. you point to your pokemon. you say that your pokemon says a good thing about them. its awkward, maybe, but it adds something to the compliment. you're not trying too hard to pick someone up, you're just being a bridge between you and your pokemon.
wingull squawked. though wingull was not a member of the fisherman class, it was able to detect that there was a pokemon on the line.
"wow, bit of a controversial take but thank you. my wingull says you don't seem like too big of a dumbass yourself." he didn't mean it like that.
a burst of water. a humanoid bug burst from the water, its scythes flourishing. big was jump-scared less in the jump-to-your-feet way and more in the impromptu-trust-fall-into-the-dirt kind of way. big's fishing rod flew from his hands, landing a good seven feet behind him closer to miles than it was himself. he quickly scrambled to his knees and hands, coming to his senses just in time to witness the scyther land a quick attack on his wingull in the air.
wingull did not immediately react, being swatted out of the air by the strangely-water-dwelling mantis pokemon.
"wingull, hit him with that air cutter!" he pointed a pointer-finger at the wild scyther, to which the scyther responded by glancing his way, twitching in an unsettling, alien way as if calibrating how exactly it was going to vivisect the fisherman. or else, that's what he imagined was going through it head.
big put his head down into the short grass, covering the top of his head with his hands. seasoned grade school vets might recognize this as tornado drill procedure. this stance was immediately rewarding, at least in the short term, as wingull took flight with a couple flaps of its wings and then, on the third, released a razor sharp gust that blasted the scyther back into the water with another massive splash. it was lost to the water for a moment, during which big nervously got to his feet.
scyther's rapid wings sounded like a motorboat, and then a helicopter, and then a dragonfly flying too near your ear as it ascended up from the water with a fresh coating of water and scratches. big, out of breath, reached up to pull his cap down more atop his head.
"name's big, by the way. aspiring poet-" big once more ducked out of the way as a vacuum wave blasted overhead -- not close enough to clip him but close enough to make him damn well feel like it could've taken his head off -- and struck his wingull. he should've stayed close to the fucking ground.
"- and resident dumbass. wingull, use water gun!" wingull was weak, desperately underpaid for this type of labor, and not exactly used to combat, but responded to the vacuum wave in kind with a water gun. the scyther evaded to the right effortlessly.
