Now that he had a sufficient number of Pokémon, Lars was starting to run into a problem: how the hell could he tell them apart by gender? There was a reason why he’d held off on naming some of the other companions he’d been picking up ever since he’d arrived in the region—some of them among his earliest captures. While the most of his ‘first team’ he was pretty set on with their nicknames, it was the rest of his companions that he was having some trouble with. How could he tell male Pokmon apart from their female counterparts, he had no idea at all. But thankfully, he knew someone who could possibly help him out with this little problem of his. After sending a quick message to Leon, which led to a conversation between them, they’d agreed to meet today—when the Breeder wasn’t too busy with heavy work at the Horned Ranch—so that he could get some insights into who was what. Soon, he found his way up Route 39, eventually coming into view of the Horned Ranch grounds proper, before he fished out his phone again and contacted Leon with another message. ‘Hey, are you there? I’m here outside the Horned Ranch. I brought them along with me,’ was what he typed into the message field before hitting ‘Send’ and waiting for a reply. MADE BY ★MEULK

Alright so maybe there had been more embarrassing things in life but Leon couldn't immediately think of them. Who the hell wanted to be seen at work wearing a pair of antlers by a guy who they knew as a decent friend? Granted, Lars would probably be too distracted to care one way or the other, but Leon had a feeling this was going to end up some big huge damn joke. Which, in a way was just fine with him... maybe. He really didn't want to hear Lars make fun of him for the rest of his life because of this. Oh well. As he received the text he let out a sigh and replied back pretty quickly. 'Mmhm yes, I'm here, stop taking so damn long.' he added a few emoji's and set his phone down. What he had learned was that Lars' Pokedex apparently hated him. It didn't tell Lars what Pokemon was what gender so the trainer was having a problem identifying it. So what was Leon doing? Playing nurse, basically. Well, breeder, more like. He'd be explaining to Lars the differences in genders and how he himself differentiated them. What fun. pie

While waiting for Leon, Lars had gone through one round of puffing away on his pipe—as the latest shipment of leaves had only come in a few days previously and he missed it so terribly. Once he was done actually blowing fragrant, vanilla-scented smoke clouds into the air around him, he then looked up and saw the other approaching him. “Sorry for such short notice,” he began with an embarrassed grin on his face. “My stupid Pokédex is apparently an outdated model, and I haven’t gotten around to replacing it yet. So yeah, I figured you’re the best I can ask when it comes to my little problem: how can you tell male Pokémon apart from their female counterparts?” he asked as he pulled out a pouch and slid his pipe into it before stowing it away in his coat pocket. There was a faint scent of vanilla hanging around him, if Leon would notice. “If the PC out here has access to personal storage, I’d deeply appreciate the help. No, like really. I wasn’t aware that some of them have actual, noticeable physical differences…” he continued, looking out at the expanse ranch grounds that Leon worked on. “How’s your boss, by the way? He still around? I wonder if he actually did what I suggested…” he trailed off a few moments later. MADE BY ★MEULK

As Leon made his way out of the Ranch's office, he let out an annoyed sigh and immediately ran his fingers through his hair. It pushed it up and oddly out of his face, but he quickly fixed his bangs and wiped his hands on his pants. It was his way of trying to forget that he had way too many things to make up for now that Cooper was moving on. Honestly, Leon couldn't blame him. Cooper had gotten a better placement for himself. He'd be moving up in the world. Had Leon thought... that there was something? Probably, which was an idiot move on his part. Unfortunately, Leon wasn't frustrated with Cooper, he was frustrated with himself. He knew better. He'd given himself a pain in his heart he didn't deserve all over again because he was an idiot. Vanilla wafting through his nose reminded him this was no time to contemplate the past events and instead he focused on Lars' words. A small smile formed, a sassy one, and it was coupled with a teasing tone. "What would you do without me?" Name a male Pokemon a female name and be ridiculed, probably. "It would solve all of your problems just to get a new Pokedex, you know." But knowing Lars, he'd just come to Leon repeatedly. "Maybe I should confiscate the thing and fix it for you." It was a tease because he was in the mood for a tease. Something. Anything other than the current events. "We have PC access, yeah. Um, as far as Cooper's concerned," there Lars went, asking. "He's doing well. He got a good offer from another region, so he took it." Leon shrugged his shoulders. "Anyway, I'll be the assistant manager of the new ranch, like I was for Cooper, so I won't be changing locations as he did." He clapped his hands together and lifted an eyebrow at Lars. "Let's get to gender identification, shall we?" pie

“Possibly make a fool of myself when it comes to naming my companions only to find out later they’re of the opposite gender. It’s actually happened before,” Lars began, shooting back an equally sassy grin in answer to Leon’s. “I accidentally named a female Swablu a male name and I didn’t realize it until way too late when she evolved into an Altaria,” he shared, scratching the back of his head out of sheer embarrassment. “That was back in Hoenn, before I came here. Anywho… maybe it has something to do with the fact that my Pokédex isn’t exactly Johto-friendly yet. Or maybe it’s just a really old model,” he added a few moments later as he took out the small, dark-red unit he had with him when he’d first arrived in the region. Popping it open, he then sighed—why didn’t he charge the damned thing before coming out here? He was about to remark on a few other things when he’d caught wind of the fact that Leon’s boss, Cooper, had transferred out of the region altogether. What was even more surprising (at least on Lars’ end) was the fact that Leon himself was now the assistant manager of the Ranch—which, in a way, was a level-up in itself? “…guess he did get the hint, then. Hey, being assistant manager isn’t so bad. You just have to find other Breeders to employ here… because I can tell you don’t like being tied down to just one place. I can tell,” he began, before reaching into his jacket and then scooping up five of the six containment units he had with him. “Okay, so…”After popping the first Pokéball to full-size and sending its occupant out, he then tilted his head to the Pawniard that had appeared from the flash of red light. “So… well, I’m not sure if this one here is a girl or a guy…and they’ve been acting pretty agitated and turning almost every single rock they see into rubble. Is there something up with that behavior?” he asked, a very confused look on his face as he explained the situation. MADE BY ★MEULK

At the thought of an Altaria female being named a male name, well, it was comical to say the least. Leon couldn't help but shake his head before smiling at the notion. This was good. This was a good distraction. He could stay behind on work if this distraction continued. Because he'd seriously thought about stopping the whole breeder thing altogether and becoming a trainer again... he still sort of was. "Alright, so, Pawniard is a difficult one to crack when it comes to genders." He began, taking out his Pokeball and tossing out his own Pawniard. "They don't have any physical indicators toward gender. They do, however, battle their same genders in rivalry matches." As Knight came out of his ball, he just shifted to look at the other Pawniard. A female, seemed like, which had him bowing like a gentleman and then staying beside Leon. "Female," Leon pointed out before motioning between the two. "Because otherwise, we'd be in the middle of a Pokemon battle." He shifted on his feet to bend down. "And as far as turning rocks to rubble... that's probably a sharpening stone thing. Pawniard like to claim a sharpening stone as their own. Sometimes you can get them one similar and they'll settle, but it's best to go find the original." He waved toward Knight. "That's what I had to do with him." pie

The moment Leon began explaining, he took out his little black notebook (the one that never seemed to run out of pages) before grabbing his pen and uncapping it as well. Scribbling down the notes as fast as he could in his shorthand, he then blinked before looking down at Leon’s own Pawniard, who bowed in the direction of his own Pawniard before standing beside his owner. “He has manners, I’ll give him that,” he began, quickly adding to the notes before looking down at his own, who then tried to poke him with one of her pointy blade-arms—but decided to elbow him in the shins instead before tilting her head towards the other one. “He’s nice, don’t you think?” he added, chuckling softly as his own Pawniard then hid behind his legs, as if embarrassed about something. “And now she’s all shy. My goodness,” he continued a few moments later, before doing a double-take and then looking down at his notes. Flipping to the next page, he then stopped scribbling the moment he found out that they had dedicated ‘sharpening stones’. “…are you saying that I have to go back into the Safari and find her…her sharpening stone thing?” he asked Leon a few seconds later, another look of incredulity crossing his face. “To stop the shredding of rocks into rubble?”MADE BY ★MEULK

Leon just stared at Lars with an eyebrow lifted. "That's what I'm saying, yes." He solidified. "She's looking for her sharpening stone." He shrugged and got out his phone, flipping through pictures. "I mean, I can show you which one he's got and maybe you two can go granet shopping, but it's not likely she'll bend. They form a sort of obsession or bond with the sharpening stones and typically they're chosen by alphas of their pack, or mothers. So."In short? Good luck with convincing her to part with it. It was like a part of them and finding a replacement was nearly impossible. Oh, Arceus. If that didn't perfectly fit Leon's circumstances nothing ever would. What a damn metaphor. Knight looked to the retreating Pawniard and lifted a brow, shifting toward her slightly as if asking if he'd done something wrong. In his own language, he decided to ask if he'd wronged her, then looked at Leon curiously before eyeing Lars. He then decided to ask if her trainer had treated her badly. Because he'd open up a can of whoop-ass so fast if that were the case. pie

Lars should’ve seen that coming. There was the trademark Leon sass, the kind he’d heard previously. And he was getting a full-on, headfirst blast of it right then and there. He couldn’t help but crack a bit of a grin as Leon finished explaining the importance of said sharpening stone to him, before he felt something attempting to tug at the hemline of his jeans. Looking down, he then saw that his Pawniard was still lurking behind him, apparently very shy upon meeting the male of her species. “Oh. Oh my god,” he spoke up a few moments later, after listening to the ‘conversation’ between both Pawniard. “…I think my Pawniard has a crush on yours?” he guessed, judging from the way his was acting in the presence of Leon’s. Over where the two Pokémon were talking, she’d mentioned something about not getting her favorite stone and how it sucked, and how she’d developed a fear of fire-type attacks. At the same time she’d mentioned that asides from the fact that she was making a fool out of herself in front of the other, she was thankful that he was a male—otherwise they’d be killing each other right now. Or at the very least stabbing one another with their blade-arms. After that, Lars’ Pawniard then continued to hide behind his legs, peeking out from behind them every few moments or so. If she could blush, then there would be one hell of a blush on her features. MADE BY ★MEULK

The breeder left his eyes on the two Pawniard with a smile on his face. Was... it pathetic that his Pawniard was having better luck than he was in the realm of dating? Probably, but who was he to even mention such things in light of the cuteness that was these two Pawniard. "I think so, yeah." Leon commented with a smile. Knight had nodded and listened to the Pawniard and made a few side comments of his own. 'Fire types suck, fighting types are worse, I hope you find your sharpening stone.' Knight's eyes traveled to the trainer and then to the Pawniard behind the trainer's legs. He couldn't help but bow, a solidification that he too was happy that she was of the opposite gender. Not only did they have no hope of killing each other, but she was a fine specimen of a Pawniard and he was happy she was of the opposite gender for the sake of possible mating. With no idea of the boldness of his Pawniard, Leon looked to Lars with a smirk. "Maybe we should breed them, just to see where it goes?" He shrugged, deciding to dismiss the notion as a joke by continuing on. "So, any others you're confused by gender on? Admittedly my Pokedex will probably do most of the work unless they have clear physical indicators, like Pikachus." pie

Now that she was hanging around behind her companion’s legs, Lars looked down when he felt his Pawniard elbowing him again. Honestly, if it was possible, she’d be blushing like hell right now because of how flustered she was getting around the male Pawniard, whose name she didn’t know yet. Whoops.‘What’s your name,’ she asked from somewhere behind Lars’ legs, before suddenly remembering that she didn’t have one yet. Oops. Either way, she then added, ‘I forgot to ask,’ before hiding behind his legs again. Over at where Lars and Leon were talking, he then chuckled at the other’s idea. “That’d still be a long way from now. I’m open to the idea, as long as you’re fine with it, too,” he replied easily. As for Leon’s next question… “…I have quite a bit more… you mind if I let her wander around?” he asked the other, tilting his head down to his Pawniard, who was still trying to hide out of sheer embarrassment due to being around the male of her species. She was extremely flustered right now, and would even get to be more flustered the longer she was around the other. Lars, on the other hand, pulled out a second Pokéball and popped it to full size before sending out the Swinub inside of it. “Now this one, I’m not sure how to tell them apart. Do they like, even have marks that can tell male from female apart? I’m not even sure if this one’s male or female,” he continued, before deciding to send out his Elekid as well. “This Elekid, too. I don’t want to make the Altaria mistake again, and then have my partners hate me for giving them names that don’t match them completely… you know how it is,” he added a few moments later as a small Electric-type then joined the Swinub, who’d begun sniffing around and looking for Berries to eat. 'My trainer dubbed me Knight,' the male Pawniard answered, moving a bit closer and around Leon's legs to get a better look at her. 'Has your trainer named you yet? He seems the nickname type.' Big posh for a Pawniard, but that was Knight in a nutshell. Posh as hell. Leon watched as the Elekid and Swinub came out. With a small smile, he watched as the Swinub started to sniff around, looking for something to eat. Hilariously enough, the Elekid started to help, like the curious little light socket he was. "Honestly, this is Pokedex work. They don't have markings, either of them. Not even different patterns. Wouldn't that make it easy on us?" Arceus was a lazy bastard who didn't like to put that much thought into design apparently. After pulling out his Pokedex and registering, he moved over beside Lars to show him the readings, then bent down. "I've heard that female Piloswines and Mamoswines have shorter tusks than males. Since males typically fight over the females." He nodded toward the Elekid. "But there are no tell tales in this one's entire evolution line. Isn't that nice?" pie

‘I think he’s taking his time with it. I’m not sure, though. But I’m pretty sure he’s just being indecisive right now,’ came the answer from the female Pawniard, who was still basically hiding behind Lars’ legs and being a very embarrassed one right now. ‘He took his time with Alpha—that’s the Lucario on our team, so I think he’s really putting some thought into what he’ll call me…’ she added a few moments later. Seriously, if she could blush her face would be a hot red right now! She’d continued to hide behind Lars’ legs—and that wasn’t until he noticed that the Pawniard was clinging to his legs did he realize that she was all flustered and such. “Oh, come on. I thought you were the straightforward type,” he began in his Pawniard’s direction, looking down at her. “Or are you just really flustered?”While he knew that his Pokémon most probably didn’t understand what the hell he was saying, the dual-type continued to hide behind his legs, before raising her blade-arms over her face and letting out an embarrassed squeak a few moments later. “Young love, isn’t that sweet,” he chuckled, before looking back at Leon’s explanation and continued taking notes. He could only wonder why some Pokémon had obvious differences yet others had next to none. What the hell, Arceus.Either way, he then took out his Pokédex and then began to shake it. “You think… you think I should get a new one?” he asked Leon a few moments later, before prying his Pokédex open and sighing—did he really have one of those ancient models? The question was purely rhetorical, but the thing in his hands looked pretty old and battered—not to mention extremely well-used. “This wasn’t mine originally…it belonged to a family member of mine. Don’t know why they gave me this dinky old model…” he added with a sigh, before showing it to Leon. Yeah, it was really old… MADE BY ★MEULK

Knight watched as the Pawniard hid herself. He just didn't understand. Was he intimidating her? Perhaps she was embarrassed because she didn't have a sharpening stone like he did and so she thought her blades were dull. They weren't. In fact, he was impessed of their condition given her situation. 'My Pastel Boy named me rather quickly,' he began with a shrug, sure to keep his distance and even look away from her to give her the space she might have desired to get over her flushed embarrassment. 'I wasn't sure what it meant at first, but as he explained it more and more, I've found I'm rather fond of it. I'm sure your trainer will give you a wonderful name that is adequate and as stunning as you are.'Leon watched their small conversation with a smile. "See this a lot in breeding, one or the other being shy. Sometimes they warm up to each other, other times they're not compatible. It's a delicate balance." Leon mostly told himself before looking at the Pokedex produced. "Arceus' wheel, Lars." Leon cursed before taking the antique. "It's definitely a hand me down, I don't even think they make these anymore... this thing's in worse condition than those tuna and egg monstrosities."Sass aside, with a small smirk, Leon turned the thing over and shrugged. "It's easy to transfer things. If you want, whenever you get around to buying an upgraded version, we can just transfer your information from this one over." pie

If she wasn’t all flustered now with all the compliments, now it was pretty much… she couldn’t words anymore at this point. This caused the female Pawniard to hide her face behind her blade-arms (even if it didn’t do much) and she let out an embarrassed squeaking noise; one which caught Lars’ attention. “Hm? What’s the matter?” he asked the dual-type, who was still hiding behind his legs, before looking up to Leon. “I don’t know about you, but I think your Knight’s a smooth talker, I mean look at her,” he began in the Breeder’s direction, unable to fight off the grin on his face. “She’s practically speechless right now,” he added with a chuckle a few moments later. The female Pawniard continued to hide behind his legs, at least until he’d gently pushed her forward, before sneaking out around her. “What’s there to be afraid of? At least you’re not slicing the shit out of each other,” he continued with a smirk on his face. This then caused the dual-type to turn around and face him before letting out another embarrassed noise! ‘Easy for you to say! I know you got that orange-haired girl with the glasses and you don’t give a shit!’ the female Pawniard said in his direction, before holding up her blade-arms out of exasperation before turning to Knight. ‘I’m so sorry, my owner’s being an idiot,’ she continued with a huff, before eventually wandering over to where the other Pawniard stood, still ten kinds of nervous but willing to get to know the other one better. ‘I hope he gets a nice name for me soon… and hopefully that doesn’t take an eternity!’ she added a few moments later. Back at where Leon and Lars were talking, his eyebrows went up at the mention of the sandwiches. “What do you have against my sandwiches? They were just squashed a bit too much but still perfectly edible,” he said with a bit of a pout on his face—and then the roasting went straight to his ancient Pokédex. “…if you know where to get one of the latest models, let me know? Honestly, it’s a bit of a drag having to lug that relic around… I don’t know why I even still have it… must be sentimental value, I guess. But sometimes it just dies even if I’d already completely charged it…”MADE BY ★MEULK
