It was a bumpy ride. Away from the main route, the pavement beneath her wheels had shifted to the hard, compacted earth. Jenna has to keep her mouth shut for fear of letting her teeth chatter; her body shaking as she peddles along the rough roads. The wild landscape of Johto was spread out before her. Wild open fields rolled for as far as her eyes could see. This section of rural landscape ran like a snake through the forested region; a place where ranchers and breeders called home.[break][break]

She peddled past old farmsteads and old ranch-houses. They were the remains of legacies long forgotten. Fathers who wished to pass their profession to their children watched as they went to the cities. Now those fathers were retired, knowing that they were the last of their line–a bittersweet accomplishment.[break][break]

Some people fought it. Some people chose to stay. As Jenna followed the long stretch of dirt road, she knew she was going to visit someone that lived by that example–for what reason, the girl was unsure.[break][break]

She had called in advance, warning of her arrival. It'd be rude to stop by someone's home unannounced... even if his home stretched further than she could comprehend with her eyes.[break][break]

Jenna Wright passed through a wide wooden archway that welcomed her to the property. A cast iron sign hung down from the old, carved wood, reading the name of her destination. Horned Ranch. She had arrived.[break][break]

A ranch-house stood in the distance, she just had to keep peddling to reach it. The roads were smoother as they lead up to the home, granting Jenna the chance to ride comfortably and not clutch her bicycle for dear life.[break][break]

After that, she pulled down the kickstand and left her bike down by the stairs to the porch. Cooper had to be around–somewhere.[break][break][break]

Cooper Armstrong first thought the phone call was from a potential customer, which made him quite elated as he had just finished delivering pamphlets to Asagi's residents. But it wasn't. Not that he was sad about it, no. However, instant gratification was always welcome- and Jenna was always welcome too.[break][break]

He swiftly put on his pants. Made himself look presentable, especially around lady-folk. Of course, he did not forget his classic hat and horns.[break][break]

When Cooper heard the crisp braking of wheels, he knew she had arrived. He smoothed his thin white shirt. Readjusted his belt buckle. And out the door he went, the screen barrier clacking against the frame.[break][break]

"Jenna! Good to see ya." The clomp of his heavy boots graced the porch. "Glad y'didn't get lost on your way here." Cooper chuckled.[break][break]

He jabbed a thumb backwards, past the rustic ranch house and toward the vast fenced field.[break][break]

"Sweetpea's been waitin' for ya. Been riled up and excited, believe it or not, the calm thing she is." He extended a hand to hers, hoping to help her up the porch stairs.[break][break]

As the screen door creaked shut, Jenna spied the long, curved shape of Cooper's horns as he stepped out from his home. It coaxed a smile onto the Ranger's features. It was a cute gimmick–she knew it had been successful. When trying to find this place, she had to stop and ask for directions. The moment she mentioned “the man with the horns,” people had immediately pointed out the roads for her to take.[break][break]

“Mornin' Coop.” She greeted, accepting his larger hand as he helped her up the last few steps. The planks of wood squeaked in protest. “Hope I wasn't interrupting anything.” While ranches could appear serene from a distance, Jenna knew that there was always work to be done. Places like this had to be maintained–mouths had to be fed. “I'll try to not take up too much of your time.” He wouldn't have to feel obligated to keep an eye on her.[break][break]

Her eyes followed the direction of his thumb, eventually spying the bullish shape of Sweatpea in the distance. Her squarish head peaked up from the fields like a concrete pillar. As bizarre as it seemed, the fossil pokemon seemed to fit in with her surroundings.[break][break]

“She looks happy.” The Ranger commented. “Thanks for taking her in. I couldn't give her what she wanted.” Sometimes, that happened. Not all pokemon were cut out for adventuring. Some just wanted to sit back and watch the skies roll overhead. The Bastiodon was likely eating her own weight in berries. It was the perfect life for such a docile pokemon.[break][break]

It had been a few weeks since the rock-type arrived at the ranch. Jenna had wanted to visit sooner, but figured it'd be best to give her time. Sweetpea needed the chance to get used to her new home, without any distractions. “I'm happy I could finally visit. All the times I ran into with you, I kept telling myself that I had to see this place.”[break][break]

It had a rustic charm. As Johto continued to modernize, there were fewer places like this.[break][break][break]
