Elsie loved the outdoors. Both as a child and as an adult she had spent most of her waking moments outdoors. As a child, she would play from sunrise to sunset in the vast gardens of the estate she grew up on. As an adult, Elsie had become a researcher, allowing her to stay in the field all day, watching and learning from the world around her. Recently, she had packed up her things, bid her family farewell and moved to Johto to start a career as a ranger - another career that would allow her to be outdoors and interacting with Pokémon.

Her first stop was the Ranger Station where, she had picked up her first Pokémon, a small, female Nidoran named Maisie. For the time being, the Nidoran was safely in her Pokéball within the well-loved but still expensive-looking leather satchel she carried. The next stop on her journey would be Route 32, where Elsie hoped to find a new Pokémon to add to her team.

Elsie preferred grass types and asked some of the more senior rangers where she would be more likely to find them. They directed her towards Route 32, the scenic strolling path outside Hiwada Town. It was early enough in the day that there weren’t many trainers on the path with her. Those that she did pass seemed to be of the same mind as her and were trying to find their own Pokémon.

After walking a sufficient distance, Elsie turned off the path and began her way down a grassy ravine bordering the Route. From her research, she knew that the more unique Pokémon would often hide deeper in the grass. She calmly pulled Maisie’s Pokéball from her bag, and gingerly held it at her side, ready to throw the moment she spotted a Pokémon in the grass.

A sweet, herbal scent filled the air. It brought back memories of her childhood: a young Elsie running through the family garden, her knees covered in dirt, plant debris tangled in her hair. She immediately recognized it as being the distinct aroma created by a Pokémon using Sweet Scent. At home in Sinnoh, she could probably determine which specific Pokémon was producing the scent, but she was completely unfamiliar with the Pokémon inhabiting Johto. What she did know for certain was that Maisie’s sense of smell was better than hers, and the Nidoran could probably pinpoint where the scent was coming from.

A small ball of blue fur tumbled to the ground as Elsie clicked open the Pokéball. Maisie turned her head and squeaked indignantly at Elsie in response.

Smiling, Elsie raised a single finger to her lips, indicating that Maisie should remain quiet. “Find the Pokémon using Sweet Scent,” she whispered. In response to the command, Maisie scuttled off, leaving a narrow path of bent grass in her wake. Elsie followed as quietly as she, delicately stepping along the path forged by Maisie.

Maisie had only gone about ten feet before she abruptly bumped into the source of the Sweet Scent. It was a rather angry and confused looking Oddish that had immediately jumped to its feet upon colliding with the Nidoran. Before Elsie could get a word in, the Oddish stomped side-to-side, rustling the leaves on top of its head. Faintly at first, but quickly getting brighter, Elsie could make out green orbs being pulled from Maisie through the air to the Oddish. The sun was shining brightly, triggering the Oddish’s Chlorophyll ability, increasing its speed and allowing it to easily make the first attack.

Maisie was bewildered, but not seriously injured by the Absorb. “It’s alright!” Elsie reassured Maisie, “hit it back with a Double Kick!” Although Maisie was a poison type, it would be pointless to use a same-type attack against the half-poison Oddish.

Facing the Oddish, Maisie charged. At the last moment, she nimbly spun around and kicked the Oddish in the face with her two back paws. The force of the kicks sent the Oddish rolling backward.

The Oddish hopped to its feet and with it’s beady, red eyes squinted, launched another Absorb at Maisie. Between the heat, the effort of battle, and the life-draining Absorbs, Elsie noticed that her Pokémon was beginning to look quite tired. “Come on, another Double Kick! I know you can do it, Maisie!”

Elsie wanted to push the little Nidoran but tried to do so as tactfully as possible. The last thing she wanted was her only Pokémon resenting her before they had even truly started their journey.

Although she was panting, Maisie obeyed her trainer’s command and charged at the Oddish in the same way she had before. Again, Maisie’s rear paws made contact with the Oddish’s face. This time the limp Oddish didn’t hop back onto its feet, but lay in the grass, breathing heavily.

“Great job, Maisie!” Elsie scooped the Nidoran up in one arm and gently tapped her with a Pokéball. With the other hand, she rolled an empty Pokéball toward the prone Oddish. She held her breath as the Oddish was pulled inside the capsule, waiting to see if she had made her first wild catch.
