Every week, it had changed to suit the arrangement of pokemon that filled its terrain. The employees had to be fast, curving through the safari and shaping the land as if they were children in a sandbox.[break][break] Another week. Another trip.[break][break] Jenna yawned. Trainers were already rushing as the timer sounded. She'd take her time. Experience had taught her that rushing to find what she wanted could lead to mistakes–taking her time and remaining calm could help her spot what she wanted. The roster looked good this week. The Ranger was glancing above the level of the tall grass, trying to spot any taller pokemon that were wandering through the lush green. If she had lowered her gaze, maybe she could have prevented what came next.[break][break] Her foot collided into the side of the small ground-type, causing her to trip over the Trapinch. Arms waving, the girl was unable to recover and hit the ground with a hard thud, barely managing to avoid a faceplant. “Shit!” She exclaimed as her shoulder took the brunt of the fall. It didn't hurt too bad–the ground had been soft–but it still caught her by surprise.[break][break] She rolled onto her back, wondering what a tripped her. A rock? “The heck was that?”[break][break] That was when something angry and orange hopped onto her chest, hissing and clicking its jaws. “Oh! It was you!” She blurted out, realizing she was pinned beneath the tiny legs of the upset Trapinch. Its black eyes stared at her, burning with humiliation. “I'm sorry, sweetheart.” She replied, trying to apologize.[break][break] But, while she spoke those words, she scooped her hands under its belly and lifted it up. Its small legs squirmed, unable to find anything to grasp onto. The Ranger held it at arm's length as she stood back up, not liking the idea of letting those jaws sink into her. “Hey, hey. It's alright. I just didn't like being at the business end of that mouth of yours.” It wiggled even harder... but then stopped as it realized what was happening. Her thumbs stroked its belly, just to try and calm it down. It worked. The ground-type chattered its maw together in... approval? Jenna couldn't tell.[break][break] It was cute. “Okay, okay. I'll stop torturing you,” and she prepared to set it back onto the ground.[break][break] The Trapinch looked confused as its little legs touched the ground. “There. Better?” It released a tight hiss like the same from earlier... but it sounded less angry. That was good! Better than the little ground-type trying to munch on her ankles. Actually, it almost seemed angry that it wasn't being held any longer.[break][break] It nudged her hands, instead. It even tried to climb on top of them.[break][break] “What? Did you like me doing that? After I tripped over you?” That was weird. Testing her theory, Jenna scooped up the Trapinch again. Holding it in her soft hands seemed to placate the creature. “...Huh.” She remarked. Another new member for the team. Something told the Ranger that the small ground-type would be a good fit. The small creature had a sweet personality. Jenna wanted to encourage it.[break][break] Snapping the ball to her belt, the Ranger resumed her wandering. The grass swayed around her body as she easily pushed through the tall blades. The further she went, the taller it became until it rose to her meet her chest. The Ranger didn't pay it any mind. Her thoughts were elsewhere. Two Safari Balls remained in her possession. With the success of her first encounter, the girl felt good about her odds–she had been lucky. “Wish it could have gone that smoothly last time.” The memory of the countless Mime Jr. and Cleffa still lingered in her mind like a bad aftertaste. Those fairies had been persistent. Hopefully, she wouldn't have to deal with such stubborn pokemon this time around.[break][break] That was when she heard a strange sound. It sounded like fingers being dragged against a chalkboard. It was cringe-inducing. Shuddering from the shrill noise, Jenna tried to find the source.[break][break] She saw something in the trees. Something dark with hints of red that streaked along its body. The Ranger recognized what it was. A pawniard. It had been one of the pokemon that had attracted her attention. Why? She wasn't sure.[break][break] The sound must have been the sound of metal against metal. That was the only explanation. The creature had knives for hands, after all... and it had been staring at her with a challenging intensity. It wanted a fight. The Ranger could sense it.[break][break] Jenna squared her shoulders, fetching one of her pokemon as the glowering pawniard dismounted from the tree. Time to battle.[break][break] She released her Houndoom. It'd be best to exploit the clear type-advantage. Jenever focused her gaze on their foe, tail twitching in acknowledgment. If this weren't a battle, Jenever might have tried a friendly approach. It was too late for that. “Fire Fang.”[break][break] Houndoom charged, letting flames spill and coat her long rows of teeth. The Pawniard responded in kind. Both pokemon collided against one another. Jenever's attack was avoided and countered with Night Slash; an attack that dealt enough damage for the dog to wince. It did not deter her.[break][break] Eventually, the Fire Fang connected. And when it did, Jenever fiercely shook her head and turned up the intensity of the flames. The air smelled of drying dew and wet soil. The sprinklers must have just shut off. Trainers were starting to filter into the clearing that Jenna had occupied, but she paid them no mind. They were too far away to disturb her search.[break][break] However, it seemed like the noise of her conflict caused a stir. Some pokemon were looking in her direction from the distant trees. As Jenever returned to her side, the Ranger plopped a hand atop her head and wondered if any of them were looking to test their mettle. Some eventually lost interest. Jenna's fingers graced the surface of her last remaining Safari Ball. She held it with a loose grasp, back lowered, as her Houndoom charged into combat. She had already prepared another Fire Fang, intending to repeat the battle she had just fought. The bulbasaur used vine whip. It missed.[break][break] With one leap, Houndoom closed the distance, and the flames that emerged from her mouth nearly engulfed her head with their furry. The hellhound was unfazed by the heat, snagging the plant-like frog into her maw to hold it in place.
