The cliffs were ahead, where the ocean would collide against the island with an unrelenting fury. It was slowly, methodically, chipping away at the land that Tanaba City resided. It was a battle that would spawn long after she was gone. Maybe the Ranger would have taken a chance to look for herself, but knew that her stomach wouldn't be able to handle it. She wasn't afraid of height; just had a healthy appreciation for them.[break][break] The thought of falling onto the rocks at the bottom was not a pleasant mental image, either.[break][break] Prick looked up at her from her bike's front basket, wordlessly asking if this was the place. “Yeah. He'll be here soon. Don't worry, it won't be too long.” The little guy gave a low sigh, nuzzling himself back into the soft padding of the blanket she had provided him. The wind from the sea could be cold. It cut straight through the material of her washed-out white hoodie. The blanket wasn't much, but it'd help insulate her little Nidoran if he started to get the chills.[break][break] Raising a hand to shield her eyes, she stared down the stretch of Route 48, knowing that it would lead through this small landmass. The landscape was rocky and disjointed, worn down by the salt that carried on the breeze. “Looking forward to seeing Drilbur?” Or, as Jenna had named her, Drilbertha. The name had been in jest. She never had the time to chose a proper name for the small mole. She just... didn't mesh well with the team. She was the type of pokemon that wanted a domestic life. Jenna was the opposite.[break][break] “Hey, I think I see him.” She pulled out her phone, shooting a quick text just to verify if it was him. It felt odd, knowing that she had traded a pokemon she had captured to a complete stranger; but, his advertisement had sounded heartfelt and he had agreed to meet with her today. I just wanted to meet up with you at least once, you know?” If she hadn't, it would have felt like she had abandoned her Drilbur to a stranger. The Trade Center was good at preventing such things from happening–she knew that Oswald was a good trainer–but this was to also put her mind at ease. Hopefully, he'd feel the same. [attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] She nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I've seen the migration do some crazy things.” How else had she managed to catch a Houndour in the middle of the Ice Caverns? While the temptation to send out Jenever lingered in the back of the Ranger's mind, she opted not to. Prick had been... touchy as of late. He seemed hellbent on spending time with her, even if it seemed to be done begrudgingly. Jenna hoped it was a sign that things were turning between the two of them; but, with his prickly nature, it was hard to tell.[break][break] They could chat while they walked. “Anyway, after you.” She gestured with her hand towards the road, wondering what would wait for them up ahead. Pushing down the kickstand to her bicycle, the Ranger scooped up Prick and held him under one arm. It was best to hold him like this. If a battle was ready to happen, he'd always scratch her with his claws while trying to dismount from her shoulder.[break][break] “Let's see if we can run across anything worthwhile.” A fairy-type would prove to be useful. While Jenna was never one to fall for the cutesy pokemon, she'd lie if she said that wasn't a factor in this decision.[break][break] It didn't take them long. As the two of them took a few steps down the path, they had already attracted attention. Two pokemon blocked the road ahead of them; a Ralts and a Lickitung. It was the most bizarre combination she had ever seen. “Uh?” Was that worth their while? Probably not. The Ralts seemed to be the most interesting of the two pokemon, but not a pokemon that Jenna was interested in investing time into.[break][break] “I'll take the little one,” and she swung the arm holding Prick, letting him propel himself from her grip. He had been wiggling something fierce. For the last few days, he had been itching for a fight. He had been exploding with energy at the first sign of conflict.[break][break] Was... was it because he was getting close to evolving? The girl wasn't sure.[break][break] “Alright, you go ahead and do what you want to do,” and Prick hit the ground running. Jenna rarely gave commands to the Nidoran. He knew how to fight. Constantly shouting moves could be tiring. If she had something to add to the battle, she would offer her advice and leave it to him to act on it or not. “So, how is the little Drillbur?” She asked Oswald, tucking her hands into her front pocket.[break][break] Ahead of her, Nidoran crashed against the Ralts with his horn attack.[break][break] “She didn't seem fond of roughin' it in the woods and sleeping in a tent every night.” Something that was integral to being a Ranger. Jenna figured it'd be best to put her somewhere nice than to torture the pokemon with a lifestyle it wouldn't enjoy.[break][break] The Ralts had used Confusion, which seemed to stagger Prick; but, not for long. The little bastard did not hesitate to charge through the pain and throw caution to the wind. Just like how he threw his poison-coated paw into the Ralts face, delivering a hard blast from his Poison Jab. “Oy, don't keep rushing back in like that. Remember what I said–remember to flank. You can't face down every opponent head on, you know.”[break][break] Before Prick could respond to the advice, he was blasted with another concussive blast from the Ralts' confusion move. “Tch.” She remarked. “He tanks too many hits.  | And the migrations were just getting crazier. It was such an odd phenomenon, one that had many people confused. It was nothing but exciting for Oswald, he lived for this sort of stuff after all. Honestly, if he wasn’t careful Oswald could end up talking about it forever and while it might be interesting to him it might be boring as hell for everyone else around him.
If he was able to make any new additions to his journal that would be wonderful, he had been slacking on remembering to do that as of recent. Couldn’t even remember what the last thing was anyhow.
Finding something to record in his journal would definitely be worthwhile. And as they moved Oswald kept an eye out, hoping to run into something soon. Fate must have been listening because soon came much faster than Oswald had expected it too.
The first Pokémon he noticed was a Ralts, a cute little thing and definitely not native to the region. And nearby it was……a Lickitung? That was definitely an odd combo, so much so that it had Oswald scratching his head. ”Wha?” Now what was the story between these two Pokémon, the migration was being weird already.
Oswald nodded in response to Jenna’s claim for the Ralts, the trainer turning his head to his Eevee who had been just as confused as the rest about the combo before them. ”I guess the other one will be our dance partner then.” Merlin reluctantly crawled out of his Oswald’s hoodie and jumped to the ground, facing the Lickitung.
”Don’t let its dopey appearance let you keep your guard down.” Oswald wasn’t worried about the Pokémon at all but letting Merlin be all lackadaisical about it could lead to some bad habits. The Eevee rolled his eyes, he would be fine.
Merlin charged the Lickitung, using Quick Attack to charge into the other Pokémon at impressive speeds. ”I’m glad you brought Drilbur up. She’s doing fine!” There had been something on his mind ever since he started to get to know the Pokémon.
”When I first met her everything was alright and dandy, no problems.” Oswald began, watching as his Eevee began to use Swift on the Lickitung. ”But there was something odd that happened…..never seen a Pokémon do this before” He paused, not being exactly sure how to explain what came next; it was a bit awkward having to say all of this out loud.
When he looked back to the fight Merlin was in, Oswald chuckled a bit. The Lickitung was trying to get a taste of the Eevee with that big tongue of hers and Merlin wasn’t having any of that. The sight of an Eevee running frantically away from a Lickitung was pretty funny all things considered.
Right before the licking Pokémon could get a nice big ole lick out of Merlin the Eevee fire of another swift attack. The volley of stars appeared to be too much for the Lickitung this time around and it went down. With the battle over the Eevee walked over to his trainer, looking completely stressed out which made Oz laugh a bit.
”If he’s not careful he’ll never get to that older.” Oz responded. ”Oh but right! I guess I’ll just have to show you at some point what I’m trying to say, it’d be easier that way.” Seriously it was hard to described and hopefully she’d feel the same way once she saw what it was that had boggled him so much.

[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] Was something up with the Drilbur?[break][break] “What kind of weird?” She asked, unable to hide the concern that shone through her tone. “Drillbertha” may be in the ownership of another trainer, but Jenna still harbored the bond that had been forged the moment she captured her; it was more distant than with other members of the team, but Jenna knew she only wanted the best for the ground-type and vice versa. “Is she alright? Have you shown someone at a Pokemon Center?”[break][break] The Ranger was so fixated with what Oswald would say next that she hadn't noticed him getting ready for a second encounter; a Meowth had made the poor decision, deciding to wander out from the tall grass, where Prick could see him. The small poison-type immediately jumped to action, unfazed from his last battle... he was even trembling with anticipation.[break][break] Very shortly, Jenna would realize why. “I just hope it isn't anything serious.” If Oswald didn't seem too concerned, then it had to be minor, right?[break][break] The girl twisted her head, sighing when she realized her Nidoran had initiated another fight. “I swear, you can't take your eyes off him for more than a minute. He's good at fighting, don't get me wrong. It's just... he's got a chip on his shoulder that makes him too eager. You know?” He acted like he always had something to prove.[break][break] He used double kick, crashing both of his blacklegs against the cat in a brutal dropkick maneuver. The attack had collided right against the Meowth's face; it couldn't have stood a chance. If it managed to recover and try to continue the fight, the Nidoran would just use the same move, over and over again.[break][break] “Alright, you did it.” The Meowth fell over, unconscious. “You burn up all that excess energy or–”[break][break] Prick shuddered, glancing back to Jenna with a confused expression before he was engulfed in a glowing white light.[break][break] “Oh! Oh! Now I get it!” She blurted out in shock, understanding why he had been itching for a battle so badly. He was close to evolving! “Wait, shit – I wanted a picture!” The girl performed a mad scramble for her phone, having hoped to catch this moment. She almost dropped her phone, but she managed to switch to apps and the camera–the next few photos she took were taken in a rapid secession as the girl clicked over and over.[break][break] And when the light faded, when the Nidoran's shape was no longer distorted, Prick reappeared from the light; he was bigger than before. Bulkier... but what really stood out to Jenna was the horn. What had once been a nub that could have been comparable to the females of his species was now reshaped as if it were a spear.  | Oswald let out an annoyed sigh, cursing at himself for worrying the girl about the Drilbur. She was fine; it was just an extremely weird issue that wasn’t anything serious. ”Hold on, hold on. I’ll just show you what I’m talking about.” Oswald went and took out the mole’s capsule; ready to release the ground type but Jenna getting distracted by her Nidoran stopped him.
Well there wasn’t much you could do when your Pokémon was acting up. It was better that they dealt with the Drilbur situation later rather than someone getting hurt because no one was paying attention.
”Yeah I know how you feel. I’ve got one that’s kind of like that.” It was hard to kick those sorts of habits to the curb though. And even if you did think it was gone it was going to come back at some point. That was something that always stuck with you.
Just thinking about it had Oswald get lost deep in thought about his own habits that were probably less than great. His attention went to the Snubbull that was currently sniffing his Eevee. ”Welll look at that, you have a fan.” Oswald teased, laughing as the Eevee was clearly not enjoying it.
What looked like the Snubbull being friendly quickly turned into a tragedy as the Fairy type took a bite out of the Eevee. Poor Merlin was already stressed out, he really didn’t need this. The Eevee let loose a Swift attack, the stars knocking the Snubbull away from him.
But that would keep the fairy away as it came for the Eevee again, this time trying to come in for a lick. The sight of this horrified the Eevee, especially after dealing with the Lickitung. Freaking out, Merlin continuously fired off Swift attacks until the Snubbull was down for the count.
”Jeez, you didn’t have to go that hard on it.” The look the Eevee gave him was screaming “You’re next” if he kept talking. Oswald put his hands up in a “don’t shoot me please” manner, a smirk on his face as his attention was then taken away from the Eevee by the blinding light that was nearby. Jenna’s little prick was evolving!
Oswald always enjoyed watching a good evolution. The Ramon boy had a big smile on his face at the sight, it only getting a bit smaller when he noticed Jenna’s expression change a bit, a bittersweet moment?
For a second he had almost completely forgotten about the Drilbur still in the pokeball. He released the Pokémon, the mole letting out a loud yawn before looking around. She gave Oswald a wave before spotting Jenna, hesitating a moment before approaching her once trainer and fellow teammate.
”She’s happy to see you.” That was a good sign, it’d be nice to enjoy this moment before Oswald had to ruin it. ”See everything’s all good until you uh…….” He rubbed his neck, not wanting to be this guy but he was going to have to be.
”Call her by the name….Drilbertha.” And there he goes, he said it. The face the Drilbur would make at the sound of that name being spoken was one that was terrible hard to describe to someone who was why Oswald was having a hard time with it.
It was a twisted mix of disgust, anger, sadness and confusion that would make anyone fearful that the Pokémon was going to die or something. ”And if you keep saying it she’ll get even worse. I’ve seen her sit in a corner and not leave it all day and one time she punched a poor kid’s Sentret into a wall.”

They both knew it; but, that didn't mean they still weren't family.[break][break] At the mention of the Drillbur's old name, Jenna could help but laugh–even when the mole's expression soured into something indescribable. “Oh! Come on! I only named you that for the trade. I didn't mean it.” The mole huffed, regardless of her old trainer's protests. “I would have named you Hazel. Or something.” The mole didn't buy it. With one tiny hand, she did a downward chop onto Jenna's head. “Ow! Ow!” And then another chop, and another. “Okay! I deserve it! I yield!” Her names were always notoriously bad. Some fit. Others didn't. Her approach to nicknames was lackadaisical.[break][break] “Take back this problem child.” She said jokingly, passing the Drillbur back to Oswald... but it felt weird to do it. It was different. When she had put that pokeball into the trade machine, there was no connection like there was right now. Her old Drillbur was in her hands... and that guilty feeling seemed to resurface. “I want to promise that I'll always be there for you, okay?” She said to the ground-type when he took her from her hands. “Just because we weren't going to work out doesn't mean I don't miss you. So, be sure to call often.” It was like an oath.[break][break] Prick nudged Jenna, embarrassed to hear his trainer utter such sappy words... even if he agreed with her. “Hey, who said you were done battling?” She said down to the new Nidorino. “We gotta take you for a test run.”[break][break] The moment the Ranger gave him permission to fight, Prick was like a child in a toy store. Eyes agleam, he tore off, running down the route to find something to battle against. Jenna could only smile to herself before turning to Oswald. “I...hope you'll come up with a better name than I did.” That was followed by a sheepish chuckle. There was a tinge in her heart, but this was the right thing to do. They all knew it. He was a good trainer. She could sense it.[break][break] In the background, Oswald would be able to witness Prick find, corner, and proceed to beat the living snot out of a poor jigglypuff. In his new evolved form, he spared no mercy in combat. A poison jab to the left, a horn drill to the right... the innocent, fluffy pink pokemon never stood a chance. | The interaction between Jenna and Drilbur were quite honestly adorable, so much so that it had Oswald chuckling. While some might think that the way Drilbur was acting meant that she didn’t like her old trainer that much it was actually the opposite. He wished he could have been there when she decided to name her that for the trade.
Part of Oswald feels like he might have agreed with her just for the joke which probably made him just as bad as her. The thought of it made him laugh, there were people out there that are just bad at names and the end of the day.
”I’ll be sure that you hear from her from time to time.” Oswald smiled as he placed the Drilbur down and returned her back into her pokeball. ”I think I’ll think of something that’ll fit her well.” He reassured Jenna, watching her Nidorino off in the distance. Seeing the Pokémon it was going up against he felt bad for it.
A fairy type against a poison type? Yeah the poor Jigglypuff wasn’t going to stand a chance against Prick and Oz was right seeing how the battle went in the Nidorino’s complete favor, it wasn’t surprising.
While he watched the fight he noticed that he had lost track of Merlin. Looking around for the Eevee, Oswald was in disbelief when he finally found the fluff ball as it was currently on the back of a rampaging Tauros.
He had no idea how in the world Merlin managed to get himself in that situation but Oswald figured he was going to have to help the little guy out of it. ”Merlin use Swift!” The Eevee’s ears perked up at the sound of his trainer, looking around to spot him nearby and calming down a bit at the sight of him.
The Eeveed did as instructed and fired off a Swift attack at the Tauros. The aim was to get the thing to slowdown enough so that Merlin could get off of it safely. While the attack did some damage it didn’t completely stop the Tauros and the bull kept bucking about, trying to swing the Eevee off.
In a panic Merlin had did it again but this time the bucking of the Tauros and the impact of the attack had the Eevee flying off of the bull. ”I got you!” Oswald ran as fast as you could nad lunged, catching the Eevee mid-air.
The Tauros was now charging at the two of them, ready to skewer the both of them with its horns. ”Use Swift and don’t stop until it’s down!” At the speed it was going there wasn’t much time to move out of the way. Merlin fired the barrage of stars, and their view of the Tauros was obscured due to the attacks.
But they were successful as the Tauros went down, its body skidding across the ground and stopping right before its horn could pierce either one of them. ”I’m not taking my eyes off of you again.” Oswald laughed.
