"don't venture out from home that often."[break][break] maybe he was getting old. near his thirties, the thought that life was too short became more of a reality carved in stone rather than a saying in jest.[break][break] "i'd bike to ecruteak, but the one i had... broke." cooper coughed, cradling the trapinch in his arms half to comfort the pokémon and half to reassure himself.[break][break] the beady-eyed pokémon clapped its jaws several times, coming dangerously close to clipping off some of cooper's chin hairs. If I can't evade my fate

The girl was the one taking lead, guiding them along their path as if she were a modern-day trailblazer; Jenna should have felt comfortable in this role, but she does not. She feels like a penny being shoved into a quarter slot. There was too much space. It was one size too big.[break][break] All that wiggle room gave her a sense of unease. It was ridiculous. How many times had she traveled along this route–by foot or by bike? It was etched behind her eyelids so that even when she blinked, she would always see the road ahead of her.[break][break] “You'd have to be crazy to get good at this.” The girl called back, switching to her “Ranger” voice. It was spoken with an air of assurance. Jenna was taught that this profession was about instilling confidence in others that took to the roads–teach people the tricks of the trade so they can wander Johto without fear. “I used to be the same way.” Until something kept her from going back.[break][break] Now, she just blamed her wandering tendencies on her profession. It was an easier explanation. It was short, sweet... people didn't want to pry; they knew the girl was young. They could assume she was out to see the world–and to some extend, there was some truth to that logic. Jenna was trying to experience the world around her. It just came with extra baggage.[break][break] It was complicated.[break][break] The girl extended out her arm, just as her Noibat returned back to them. The small bat easily navigated down from the canopy that was strung over them, rustling as lightly through the leaves as a stray breeze. “All good?” She asked, rewarding her dragon's cooperation with a slice of fruit. He nodded, eagerly taking the treat from her hands with his small fingers.[break][break] “He's still learning, so we might come across a few wild pokemon on the way. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Bike or not, I'll get you there as quickly as I can.” That statement was followed by a soft smile–a small smile. But circumstances led him onto a different path. Not that he minded; he was doing his parents proud. At least he hoped.[break][break] "Calling yourself crazy now?" Cooper rubbed the tip of one of his horns. "Guess you are a little crazy... with all the ruckus around Team Virus lately, I don't know if I'd be walkin' around all willy-nilly."[break][break] As Jenna reassured him once more, Cooper surrendered to the moment sense of security. Her subtle smile communicated to him, that he had chosen the right person. Furthermore, the simple scene of a Noibat plucking fruit from the ranger's fingers was enough to conjure the illusion of an uneventful stroll. Yet such things didn't exist. Not here.[break][break] As they stumbled upon a steel princess and her knight, Cooper's trapinch clapped its jaws ferociously, sensing the territorial dispute in their company's agitated shapes.[break][break] "Yikes. I'll take care of the Aron, if that's all right with you? I don't want my little guy locking jaws with her's." Cooper unlocked his arms, allowing the ant lion to spring forth, its head bobbing dramatically as it landed.[break][break] The Aron's eyes narrowed within its sturdy shell before he emitted a high-pitched screech ( metal sound). Wincing, Cooper quickly cast his hand toward the ground: "Dig! Nobody wants to hear that!"[break][break] After a moment's distraction, the Trapinch burrowed underneath the earth. The ground rumbled as sparse weeds and dandelions shifted and shook from their roots. A sheen glimmered from the Aron as it exercised its knightly duty of iron defense. The aron's stubby legs shook as the earth fell beneath him, revealing a wide orange maw. With a violent chomp, the strong teeth captured the armoured pokémon—but dealt no pain.[break][break] Perfect.[break][break] "I might not know how to read a map, but 'least I know how to battle just a bit, heh!" Cooper hollered at Jenna. "Bulldoze! Slam him into a tree!"[break][break] His deep voice roared out like the disturbed earth, and as the aron frantically realized its restrained condition, the trapinch charged toward the thick base of a nearby oak. Before impact, the trapinch lifted its massive head before slamming himself and the aron against the trunk. Screeches, unintentional and pained, rained from the creature as the trapinch broke its defenses. Relentlessly, the aron was smashed onto the tree while the trapinch crunched on the softening carapace.[break][break] Finally, the aron rolled out of the trapinch's teeth, its limbs fidgeting from the abuse.[break][break] word count: 424[break]

[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] Mawhile was going to be a challenge.[break][break] As Cooper engaged with the Aaron, Jenna had to think carefully about her first move as her Noibat disengaged from her shoulder. He flapped his tiny wings, keeping himself suspended from the ground, as he waiting on his Ranger's commands. Echo was still young. He needed guidance when it came to battle. The girl clenched her jaw, finally settling on an idea; it would be risky, but if it worked, everything would work out just fine.[break][break] “Echo, use supersonic.” Causing confusion was an effective tactic. An annoying tactic, but a tactic none the less. At her command, her Noibat emitted the high pitched noise from the speaker-like mechanism inside his ears. The sound was focused toward the Mawhile's direction, who had no possible way of dodging something like sound.[break][break] The creature almost doubled-over, clutching at the two long ears that protruded from its head as if they were hair. The giant mouth extended from the back of its head opened and closed with a veracious furry–a panicked reflex as it tried to snatch the Noibat. In the end, it clapped its mouth together with such speed, it accidentally bit its own tongue, causing damage; vice grip had failed.[break][break] The Ranger glanced away from her battle, just as Cooper raised his voice as his battle neared the climax. “Get 'em.” She replied, giving a thumbs up.[break][break] Her battle, on the other hand, continued to repeat the same cycle. The confused Mawhile would try to attack and would either hurt itself or miss outright. All attempted Vice Grips failed. Her Noibat was still freely flying, focused on dodging any incoming attacks. On occasion, he'd release a loud shriek in an attempt to lower his foe's defense. He had caught on to Jenna's strategy and was trying to supplement it while she had been distracted.[break][break] He knew that if one attack were to connect from the Mawhile, he'd be toast.[break][break] “Alright, let's wrap this up. Use tackle,” and all of the damage the mawhile had inflicted on itself, combined with her Noibat's shrieks, had lowered its health and defense enough for Echo to claim the victory. He took a moment to puff his chest in pride before returning to his Ranger for praise. “Yeah, you did good,” and she scratched the top of his head with her fingernail. It must have felt good because he drummed his small foot against her shoulder.[break][break] "Good thing we wrapped that up quickly. Let's try and get moving. All that noise might attract more pokemon," and she gestured for Cooper to follow as she started moving. Among the trees, the abandoned peak of the Bell Tower stood ominously. Cooper could not help but wonder if this tower would be the next to fall. Another pair of steel hovered onto the path, casting the shadows of an impending showdown. In his ears, he could hear a western whistle. The sun felt hotter. And he swore a tumbleweed had flitted by.[break][break] "Yikes— guess we disturbed the peace too much." Cooper said to Jenna with a laugh. His fingers cradled an empty pokéball as he quickly directed his trapinch to catapult into action. "I'll tip you extra! And maybe a drink... if I have the cash!"[break][break] As altair clapped his jaws, the metal cyclops assumed a preemptive sheen. The iron defense prepared the beldum for the trapinch's hungry mouth. But the trapinch was numb to the self-preservation. Instead, the ant lion barreled forward. His head seemingly had a mind of its own as it slammed clumsily into the side of their opponent. A solid hit. But the beldum refused to reveal weakness. Instead, the mechanical creature retaliated with a take down, rushing toward the trapinch like a hijacked plane. [break][break] "Open your mouth!" Cooper shouted.[break][break] Altair complied. As the neverending black of Cooper's pokémon expanded from the orange gates, the beldum only accelerated. With a dramatic strike, the beldum made impact—but the trapinch held strong. Its small legs dug into the ground as the trapinch skidded backwards, casting small whirlwinds of disturbed dirt. The trapinch had the beldum arena trapped, and seeing the glint in the rancher's eyes, altair began to slam the beldum's heavy bottom onto the ground.[break][break] After the ruthless rhythm passed an appropriate amount of repetition, Cooper cast his ball.[break][break] word count: 367[break]

The dense foliage was broken apart, veins and partings of grass running through the edges of the distant forest as if it were veins, creating ridges where trees rose up from the ground as if they were the parting walls of canyons. As the blue skies rolled overhead, she knew that Echo could rest on her shoulder as they continued–when the land stretched before them, they would be able to see any approaching threats with their own eyes.[break][break] Which was why the Ranger was surprised when she spotted two floating pokemon in the distance; their steel bodies reflecting light to make them twinkle as they made their approach. The magnemite was nothing out of the ordinary, but the beldum? That was unexpected. “That's a rare catch, right there.” She had remarked to Coop, just as the man took notice of their new company.[break][break] “Might've made too much of a ruckus, but it's nothing to sweat about.” Her finger gently nudged her Noibat into action, glancing over to the breeder as he tilted his hat in her direction. She released a hint of a laugh as he explained his intentions. “You calling dibs? Don't sweat it. It won't take up any more time than this normally would.” That meant the magnemite would be her opponent.[break][break] Echo soared, taking advantage of the clear skies. For a dragon with such small wings, he knew how to use them.[break][break] And as he soared downward towards the magnemite, it prepared itself for battle... and Jenna felt the odd urge to call out a move that her Noibat rarely used. “It's gearing up for something defensive. Use snatch!” She called out, both hands cupped to her mouth to help her voice project.[break][break] She was right. Noibat extended a hand as he flew downward, letting an odd and dark energy coat his fingers. When the magnemite attempted to use Light Screen, his fingers broke through it and tangled themselves inside the fabric of the move as if it were a blanket; with one hard yank, he was able to covet it for himself.[break][break] Jenna knew it wouldn't do her pokemon much good. Echo wasn't a special attacker... but it kept the magnemite from securing those benefits.[break][break] The magnemite attempted to respond to the theft with supersonic; Echo was ready to divert it. While the steel pokemon was able to float above the ground, it lacked the speed and finesse that wings provided. Her Noibat was able to quickly maneuver, twisting and turning around the floating steel orb. It assaulted it with tackle after tackle, trying to slowly whittle down the steel type. It... was going to take awhile.[break][break] Jenna glanced away from her battle, knowing it had become repetitious, to watch how Coop was doing. He had just chucked his pokeball. "i've never seen a bastiodon before..."[break][break] a curiosity bred into his bloodline seemed to activate in his heart. like a vial broken, that inquisitive nature inspired his limbs to move as he approached the ancient beast step by step.[break][break] "i just wan'ta..."[break][break] hand outstretched, cooper eyed the looming shield with an open gaze. he clicked his tongue several times as one hand slipped into his pocket. the air seemed to still. the world fell into stasis as the bastiodon locked eyes with his, fingers of grass falling from its now closed mouth.[break][break] "i've got some berries." cooper whispered to jenna.[break][break] pulling out some orans, he steadily lifted his arm before a sudden grunt from the creature caused his hand to open in surprise. the berries scattered onto the dirt path. hints of blue stained his sweaty palm.[break][break] word count: 339[break]

If I can't evade my fate
[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] “You're too kind.” The Ranger scratched her cheek, struggling to process that compliment. Jenna seemed to fluster, if only for a moment, as she let Coop's words sink in. “We should get you to where you need the be. And maybe I can help you pick out a name for your new friend–” There was a noise. A pounding. Jenna paused herself, straining her senses to try and catch that noise once more.[break][break] Maybe they had lingered for too long. [break][break] As the ground shook under Jenna's feet, she knew something big was coming–something bigger than her team. Echo seemed to stiffen on her shoulder, tense and ready for her command, as the Bastiodon lumbered out from the line of the trees. “Wait... aren't they extinct?” She had said aloud, sparing a glance towards Cooper's direction to catch his reaction. He was equally stunned. “I knew the migration had been bad, but this is...” It was beyond explanation. Had it been abandoned after it was resurrected?[break][break] Jenna watched as it ripped foliage from the ground, chewing lazily as it stared in their direction. To Jenna, it was almost reminiscent of a Tauros confined in the stables of a ranch. It could have appeared domestic–grazing without a care in the world. She supposed if she was a living, breathing wall, she would have the same attitude.[break][break] Her eyes shift over to Coop as he takes a few steps forward. “Careful. Caaaaaareful.” She said, trying to keep her tone soft and gentle as to not rouse the beast. Her heart seemed to beat in tandem with every step he took, humming with such a force she'd wonder if it'd pop from her chest.[break][break] She should have brought her original team. With just Echo and Tessa, there was no way she could defend either Coop or herself.[break][break] At the breeder's whisper, she nodded in understanding. A berry could coax some trust from the creature. Maybe it could buy them enough time to make a run for it if the encounter went south. Her eyes watched Coop's calloused hands as they reached for the berries; a hard lump of suspense had locked in her throat. If it didn't work, could she make the run to Ecruteak from here? Could he?[break][break] When the berries spilled out from his hands, the girl could've had a heart attack. Shit. Her body seemed to lock into place, watching the creature's reaction... and it looked to the berries on the ground, and then to Coop.[break][break] There was a thump as it took a step forward, nostrils flaring as it breathed in the scent of the fruit. It was a nasally sound, something deep and almost congested, as it boldly took another step forward to sniff at his hand. “Just stay still. Stay very still.” Jenna warned, knowing her voice had been raised a pitch, betraying her worry.[break][break] It raised up a leg and ever so gently pushed against the breeder. Cooper was a strong man, but the push was coming from a creature that weighed several times his weight. It would have been impossible to push against it–and the Bastidon pushed until the breeder would fall back, bringing the berry-stained hand to mouth level.[break][break] It started licking him, trying to get every bit of juice. For Jenna, that seemed to confirm her earlier suspicions. This was a pokemon that was familiar with people.[break][break] She took one step forward, then another, as Coop had to endure this situation. She scooped up one berry from the ground, and then another... and gently presented them to the Bastidon, hoping to draw its attention away from Coop.[break][break] It worked. The foot that would have been lightly pressing the breeder down was released and it ambled towards the Ranger, the ground shaking with every thunderous step. “H-hi, sweetie.” As she extended out one hand with the berries, Coop would be able to see Jenna reach for her pokeballs on her waist.
