They brought an energy that could be felt, even from afar. “It's ominous, isn't it?” There was no response. The Ranger cast her eyes down to the Espeon at her side, who stared at the dark and menacing shapes with total indifference. Was Aeon even looking at the clouds? He seemed to be looking beyond them. His eyes held an emptiness that could not be explained.[break][break] Sometimes, his silence was unsettling. What was he seeing? What kept him so captivated?[break][break] Pushing her bike, the Ranger knew she only had so much time before the storm hit. It'd be best to backtrack down the mountainous route, back to Fusube City. She would not tempt her luck. Not in her current state. The Ranger knew that trying to camp would only cause trouble. A flare of pain arose from her side, where an ugly bruise had formed.[break][break] She had been told she was lucky. It was a bone bruise, not a break.[break][break] To Jenna, it hurt all the same. Her hand lightly cupped where the pain originated, wondering how much longer the wound would interfere with her life. She had to be cautious. Careful. Nursing this injury would take another few days. [googlefont=Fira+Sans|Playfair+Display] [attr="class","aaa"]route forty-five, otherwise known as the mountain road. it's an impressive stretch of land; filled with various bridges and rivers. and waterfalls. waterfalls! it's a beautiful route fit for anyone looking for a view. unfortunately, theo isn't looking for a viev; no, he's looking for something more specific.
it doesn't look like he's going to get it as the dark clouds loomed in from up above, foreshadowing an inevitable downpour. the only question is when exactly the inevitable will come.
"piece of shi—" unlit cigarette in his mouth, lighter in his hand, he struggles to get it to ignite. each attempt ends with disappointment and slight pain at the tip of his fingers. he grows frustrated with every failed attempt; and there has been far too many for his liking. "not my day, huh?"
a thunder cracks, booming through the entire route, aiding to the sullying of his mood. he sighs, exhaling his frustrations as he grabbed the cigarette and stuffed it back into his pocket. this day's all but fucked. with little hope left in his system, he glanced over his shoulder and what does he see? hope.
gods' gift to him; an apology he'll gracefully accept: an espeon. there's a pesky trainer attached to it, but he's gotten rid of worse. still, the espeon looks too strong for them to handle and slasher's way too weak and unreliable. they're rapidly approaching. looks like he'll have to improvise.
stepping onto the road, he frantically waves at the ranger to get her to stop. "hey, hey! please! help!" his voice carries with it distress, which he pulls off flawlessly. he has a feeling she'd stop, so he continues.

The entire walk up the mountain path had been quiet. The rains had driven everyone away. The Ranger imagined they were clustered in the caves in the distant hills. Pokemon could sense the shift of the weather better than anyone. If the rains were coming down as hard as the forecast suggested, it'd be wise for her to pick up the pace.[break][break] Her side ached. Maybe it was the moisture. It had only been a few days since the incident. The wound was still healing. The Ranger knew it had been foolish to push herself, but traveling was all that she knew. Jenna tried to ignore the pain and put on a strong facade; it was something she was good at. Aeon seemed to see right through it, flanking closer and closer in case she needed support. “I'm not that bad.” She murmured. “It just smarts.”[break][break] She heard the crack of thunder. The rumble crawled up from the ground up.[break][break] “Shit.” They had to get moving. The Ranger got ready to start peddling on her bike and head back to Fusube, but that was when someone jumped out from the trees, waving their arms and frantic. It was a man. The girl could spy the outline of his jagged hair from down the road.[break][break] This was just her luck. The one time she was feeling like total shit and someone needed her help. As a Ranger, she had an obligation to agree–she just wished it was under better circumstances. “Woah. Take a breath.” Jenna asked of the man, unable to discern his lies. “It's not raining yet. You got plenty of time. Do you know where he went? Which cave he was heading to?”[break][break] Aeon stared at the man. He didn't blink. He didn't move. His milky eyes were clouded but focused. His body refused to budge, holding as still as a statue. [googlefont=Fira+Sans|Playfair+Display] [attr="class","aaa"]he first lets his eyes scan her, taking in as much as the moment allows him. she's a ranger, that's as obvious as it comes, and what's less obvious is the crookedness in the way she walks. she isn't limping, but it's enough to set him off. it tells him she's injured.
"did i say cave? i meant the city. ah, i'm a mess, i'm sorry."
strike one. he drops the first hint that gives him away, whether she picks up on it is out of his control. her espeon, however, seemed to have notice how things seemed a bit off. he glances down at it momentarily. the pink pokemon, as valuable as it is, ruins his plans because he can't fight a pokemon. he's physically not able to. not to mention the psychic abilities it has.
"can we try that way? i think it was that way."
pointing north, he waits for her answer. one of his hand finds his pocket while the other hangs by his side. he gets an awfully bad feeling about this situation; and he's one to always trust his gut. always. it's saved him more times than he'd like to count. but he doesn't need his gut to tell him what's wrong with this situation, no, he's looking at it right now.
the espeon.
clearing his throat, he starts to take slow steps back. "actually, i think he'll be fine. let me go look for him myself." his eyes never stray.

The Ranger slowly crossed her arms over her chest, both eyebrows raised, as she let the man continue. The mix up between the city and the cave? That could have been dismissed. People said dumb things when they were caught in the heat of the moment... but when his eyes glanced back to Aeon with caution, his story fell apart. He knew it, too. That was why he tried to back out of it.[break][break] The Ranger rubbed the bridge of her nose.[break][break] “Dude. You wanna... walk behind that tree, take a breath, and try that again?” She deadpanned, her eyes suddenly matching the empty gaze of her Espeon. Eevees always took after their trainers. “I mean, I got all day. What's a little rain gonna do, huh?” Her tone was as flat and as dry as a desert. What was he? A mugger? Some jackass with Team Virus?[break][break] Probably not Team Virus–or so she hoped. If he was, that would mean there were more nearby.[break][break] Jenna released a long, painful sigh. The injury was not mixing well with her mood. She had to draw it back. She wasn't a cop. She was a courier. “I shouldn't even bother asking what you were just planning,” because it had been so obvious.[break][break] Even if Jenna sported Ranger credentials, that did not mean she could run around arresting people–that was not her job. She never wanted that to be her job. Some Rangers liked to mix those two elements together. She had not. All she wanted to do was travel–maybe help a few people along the way.[break][break] There was another crackle of thunder, followed by the cloudburst. One of the thunderheads surrendered to the weight of the moisture it had collected. “Shit.” Jenna glanced up at the sky for a fraction of a second, right as the downpour hit.[break][break] It hit hard.[break][break] The sudden onslaught of water was instant. It drilled against them with the weight of hail. The girl had to throw both hands over her head, cussing. Within moments, she was drenched. “Well. That's as peachy as a pecha berry.” She should have never left Fusube City. She should have stayed in the Pokemon Center, nice and warm and with kind faces. Several scenarios ran through her mind about how shitty this day had become, trying to find the route she could have taken to avoid this–[break][break] But none of those scenarios included an Onix. The long shadow was cast over their shoulders.[break][break] “...Oh, well. I take that back. Now that's real peachy.” Venom dripped from her lips, one hand still braced to her side. “Aeon.” The judging Espeon had to end his stare-down, looking to the frantic Rock Serpent that was rampaging toward them. It was undoubtedly trying to reach shelter from the storm. They were in its way.[break][break] In a desperate attempt to stop the encroaching pokemon, Aeon used Psychic in the hopes of lifting the massive rock-type from the ground. It worked, but not for long. The drowning noise of the rain made it hard to concentrate. He dropped the giant serpent after managing to levitate it for only a few short moments–but the impact sent a shock-wave. The Serpent was knocked unconscious, but the grounding beneath their feet seemed to shift in an ominous way.[break][break] The cliffs that flanked them seem to shake.[break][break] A landslide. Jenna recognized the signs. “Move!” She shouted to the would-be thief, suddenly shoving him towards one of the distant caves to their side. The moment she did, the earth beneath their feet would seem to lose friction.[break][break] She had to run.  shit. arrogance is a double-edged sword. it sets you apart from others, makes you special but at the same time, it makes you vulnerable. it makes you a target. theo normally threads that line well; he knows when to push things and more importantly, when to back off. he misjudged the situation today, or rather, misjudged the espeon. he overlooked it, assumed it was nothing more than a mindless pokemon. even the best make mistakes sometimes. his errors just came at an unfortunate time. "no, i think i'm good. thanks." thunder cracks. rain follows. it's a good distraction but not enough to allow him to flee. he waits it out, baiting her to make a mistake. but before anything else can happen, the ground trembles as the skies did. an onix. it's snaking right towards them at inhumane speeds. he tenses, reaching for slasher's pokeball out of reflex. he stops himself and watches as espeon takes charge of the situation. its PSYCHIC engulfs the onix and lifts it up in the air; only to drop it moments later. he recognizes it, too. he's too distracted by the imminent landslide to react to her shoving him into one of the caves. the momentum carries him, but his feet fail him as they trip. he stumbles onto the ground until his back hits something. it's dark, but when he turns, he sees a nidorina. "oh, fuck—" slasher's out of his pokeball within seconds. his CRUNCH stops the ground-type from DOUBLE KICKing theo right in his face. theo moves to the side, rising to his feet as he avoids the battle. GROWL collides with SCREECH. POISON STING faces AQUA TAIL. behind him, the ranger had managed her way into the cave. "are you trying to kill us?" he snaps at her. "what the fuck were you thinking?" the entrance of the cave trembles; its ceiling breaks and falls, toppling down as they block their only way out. "congratulations. now we're trapped."

When the landslide happened, there hadn't been enough time for her to process what her pokemon had done. Her first thought had been to run–but why had that happened? He had never done anything like that before. She had believed he was more conservative when battling. He had never been reckless. Any time he had used Psychic, he had been wise enough to compress the move into concussive blasts to strike at his opponents. What possessed him to try something so risky? The Ranger didn't know. There were many things she didn't know about her psychic pokemon. Communication was not his strong suit.[break][break] They would have to talk. She had to figure out what had caused it.[break][break] After the cave collapsed, she nearly doubled over, clutching her side as it flared with pain renewed. She had been told to avoid physical activity. There was a chance that exerting could cause problems. The damage done to her bones left them fragile. That brief moment of running could have broken them. A tight hiss left her lips, one fist pounding against one of the rocks to her side.[break][break] When it passed, she confirmed that they were not broken–they just really fucking hurt. “I'm sorry.” She breathed out, taking responsibility for what had happened as she tried to gather her composure. “I don't know why he did that. I don't even know where he got that idea. Are you hurt?” There was genuine concern in her voice. She wasn't going to try and come up with excuses. This was her fault. As a trainer, she was supposed to anticipate stuff like this. “That could've been bad. Shit.” She had been lucky.[break][break] Her gaze focused, glancing up at the agitated thief and his Totodile. Somehow, she's not surprised to see the water-type standing next to his trainer, looking just fine.[break][break] “Cave systems around here are usually drilled to have a few extra exits for trainers, just in case something like this happens.” Which meant they didn't have to stand around and wait for someone to come and find them.
