The fledgling bird scratched constantly. At every hour of the day, he seemed hellbent on raking his body against the sharpness of his claws. With each swipe of his talons, he uprooted the soft down that covered his body. If that was not sufficient, he would drag his body against the nearest abrasive surface. As the Ranger watched, she knew what was coming. He was growing. The Precocial phase was ending.[break][break] It made her nervous.[break][break] It was no secret that he was the strongest. His size could be deceiving, but the Ranger was not fooled. She had seen what he was capable of. Now, she could sense that the next stage was arriving... and she just hoped she was ready for it. Evolution could change a pokemon. Would he still be the same? Would he still rest atop her shoulder and seek her for comfort as he lazily slept the days away? Some of her pokemon changed when they evolved–most of them changed for the better.[break][break] Jenna hoped this would be the same.[break][break] Sterling was unable to rest. He sat atop the girl's shoulder, looking uncomfortable as she dismounted from her bike.[break][break] “After today, it should be over.” She smiled, affectionately scratching the crown of his head. “You feel it coming?” He stared at her, unable to explain what his body was doing. “I'm sure it'll be okay.” Sterling did not need the reassurance but sensed that she did. Same as always.” The Ranger ordered. How many times had they done this? She had lost track. The Rufflet was one of the oldest members of her team. While everyone else had changed, he remained constant; members of her team who were once smaller than Sterling now towered over him.[break][break] The Tangrowth prepared itself for battle. With its multiple limbs raised, it summoned a power from within itself that disturbed the earth. Jenna could feel the tide that seemed to emit from it; watching as nearby rocks levitated from where they had been laid to rest. Ancient Power. The Ranger recognized the attack. “Sterling. Sweep above it–” Her orders were interrupted when the rocks were launched.[break][break] Jenna had to move. As the rain of debris were shot in her direction, the Ranger could spy Sterling swing to make a hard left to avoid the assault. Jenna barely managed to perform the same dodge, flinging herself in the other direction to avoid the onslaught. Rocks that had been aimed for her body collided with a nearby tree, missing her completely. Sterling was not so fortunate. A stray rock managed to clip his wing and drive him back to the ground.[break][break] But he brushed it off and continued onward on foot, not letting that brief interruption keep him from completing his attack.[break][break] Aerial Ace was his signature attack; it was too tempting to resist. Sterling caught enough wind beneath his wings for it to raise him; swept up from the ground, he slammed with powerful force against his opponent. Jenna was scrambling back onto her feet as he followed up his attack. Sterling's Aerial Ace had been successful, why not continue it?[break][break] His talons had latched onto the tangle of vines that laced the Tangrowth. He ripped the grass-type from the ground despite its size far surpassing his own. Flapping hard, he flew up higher and higher until he finally figured it was time to release his struggling opponent. Sky Drop. The Tangrowth fell back down to the ground. Another battle awaited them.[break][break] Jenna felt her eyes drift, spying the light green of the Cacturne from the darkened hues of Illex Forest. Its eyes gleamed from the shadows. Another pokemon that had been displaced by the migration. The cactus pokemon did not belong in a place like this. Jenna imagined it missed the scalding heat of the desert where it originated; but, this was not the time to humor such thoughts. It was time to fight.[break][break] Sterling could feel his body tremble, radiating an energy that even the Ranger could feel. Something was slowly awakening. Unlike her other pokemon, who evolved and surprised her, Jenna could feel this coming. It was impossible for the Rufflet to hide it. “Go.” She murmured, letting her fingers stroke his soft feathers one last time. They seemed to collect static the moment they made contact. It shocked her fingertips. “It's time.” There was no doubt in her mind that Sterling would win this battle and obtain his next phase.[break][break] “Aerial Ace,” she ordered. If this was going to be it, then she wanted to take an active role in this battle.[break][break] The Cacturne expect the attack, raising a wall of spikes to deter the Rufflet. “Shit.” Sterling had to halt his neck-breaking pace to avoid the sudden shield, wings aching from the sudden shift in direction.[break][break] Then, without warning, the wall dropped and Cacturne utilized Sucker Punch to catch Sterling by surprise. It worked. The punch collided against the small bird and sent him back towards Jenna. She managed to catch him, keeping her Rufflet from colliding against something worse. “Got you.”[break][break] The Rufflet was frustrated. Jenna could feel it. He never liked to waste time battling. It was a chore to him. “One attack is all it'll take.” The Ranger said to reinforce him as he departed from her grasp.[break][break] He used Tailwind, driving his wings with a hard force to summon the winds around him. The augmented speed would help for what he planned next.[break][break] When the Cacturn tried to use Pin Missile to attack from afar, her Rufflet avoided it. The newly garnered speed allowed him to dodge with grace–but it also allowed him to build even greater momentum for when he used Aerial Ace. The attack collided with a resounding crack, as loud as thunder after the lightning.[break][break] The Cacturn hit the ground, unable to continue... and her Rufflet landed on the ground, finally allowing himself to be consumed by the energy that had been growing. He glowed. Softly, slowly, he transitioned. After spending so long as a tiny hatchling, he had grown used to seeing the world from a certain angle. He was used to looking up at Jenna and craning his neck to do so. Now, when the Ranger approached, they were almost at eye level with one another.[break][break] He allowed his eyes to shut as her hands ruffled through his new feathers. The itching was gone. “Feeling sleepy, huh?” He did. If the Ranger kept scratching, she could have easily coaxed the older bird to rest. “Well, I think you deserve it. We can set up camp here for the night–”[break][break] There was a growling.[break][break] Sterling and Jenna paused, their eyes glancing to where the sound originated. A bush was rustling. Something was emerging from the dense leaves and bramble of the Illex Forest. A Mightyenna. The Ranger is not surprised the see the dark hound. This wasn't the first time they had encounter this Dark-Type pokemon in this stretch of the woods. Her eyes glanced back to Sterling, who seemed irate. “Think you can stick around for one more fight?” He gave a dramatic sigh like she was trying to force him to do something unreasonable. “Pretty please?” She jokingly requested.[break][break] He caved. The newly incumbent Braviary stepped forward, raising a wing to block any unwarranted attacks against Jenna. The Mightyenna crouched low to the ground, snarling at the more experienced pokemon. It wouldn't back down–not without a fight.[break][break] It charged. The black hound allowed a cool air to emit from his jaws, preparing to use Ice Fang. Sterling wouldn't give him the chance. The moment the Mightyenna lunged into the air, ready to bite, Sterling had already prepared an attack of his own.[break][break] Superpower. With one sharp swing of his wing, he unleashed a power that had been aching to be used. The force of the strike was indescribable. With one downward swing, he smashed the Dark-Type to the ground with such force it cracked and split the earth to form a crater from the impact.[break][break] And a steam released from the Brviary, immediately exhausting him. His foe was unconscious. Jenna placed a hand against her Braviary. “Alright.
