A Patrat was traveling through the tall grass with a purpose; its small body parted through the long blades of green, making a path as it moved from one end of the field to the other.

From a distance, the Ranger can watch the path of compacted grass stretch onward as the small pokemon sought higher ground. A large rock, situated in the middle of the clearing, became its objective. Jenna could only quirk a brow as it scaled the crag. The Patrat had found the perfect lookout that allowed it to peer at any and all approaching figures...[break][break]

That also included the Ranger as she took her first step into the tall grass. The Patrat released an aggressive screech, trying to keep her from intruding. It was annoying. The sound was sharp and stung her ears with its intensity. Jenna fixed the small rat with an unimpressed stare, unable to comprehend the reason for such a ruckus.[break][break]

“...Gonna scare off the other pokemon.” Or attract them.[break][break]

Jenna fished for one of the pokeballs on her waist. Once the proper capsule was in hand, she snapped her wrist to deliver a fast toss that released her pokemon of choice; her Fennekin. The firefox blinked at the familiar surroundings, recognizing where she was standing. Not so long ago, this had been her home. The smells and the sights were familiar to her...but the Patrat was not.[break][break]

As the light faded away, Jenna raised her hand to catch the pokeball as it was launched back into her awaiting hand.[break][break]

Jenna had yet to use the Fennekin in a fight. Much of Morrigan's personality had yet to reveal itself, but Jenna knew the fire-type was fierce in battle. The Ranger had seen how she had attacked without hesitation. Right now, judging by the fur that bristled along her soft coat, Jenna was ready to witness it again.[break][break]

“Go ahead.” The fox seemed pleased at the command. She lunged forward and utilized Flame Charge. When her body was engulfed in flames, she collided against the Patrat and knocked it straight from the rock that it had tried to claim as its own. The normal-type hit the ground with a hard smack, its body bouncing across the ground. Before it could try to pick itself up and charge back into the fray of battle, Morrigan released a Psybeam and finished the job.[break][break]

The Ranger could only sigh, knowing that the battle had been a waste of time. She took a step forward, ready to call back the Fennekin, when the tiny fox was engulfed in light. The transition was fast; a sign that it was a change that was long overdue.[break][break]

The newly formed Braixen seemed surprised. She clenched her newly formed hands and glanced back to Jenna; someone that was still a stranger to her. “Hey. Looking good.” Jenna replied casually. Morrigan didn't seem like the type that was thirsty for praise or attention.[break][break]

The Braixen remained quiet, but nodded at Jenna's assessment. She agreed. It did feel nice.

With the Patrat out of the way, Jenna could continue her search.[break][break]

The last time she had visited the Safari, her mind could remember where there had been standing water; the employees for the Safari Zone often frequented these spots, double checking the water quality to guarantee that the new water-types were able to survive. Taking pokemon from around the world and forcing them to adapt to new environments could be traumatizing for their health... so, as the Ranger stepped out from the tall grass, she kept her eyes peeled for the familiar khaki uniform.[break][break]

She spied one. A man with a net that was walking back to the main path. If he was leaving, then that meant the pond was closer than she thought–[break][break]

Jenna almost stepped into it. The Ranger let her foot hover inches above where the water resided, noting that the swamp-like water would be perfect for what she was looking for. She withdrew Morrigan back into her pokeball, knowing that the fire-type was not equipped for what was coming. Her hands fetched the second pokeball that was situated next to her own.[break][break]

She released her Bulbasaur. “Sawyer. Keep an eye out for dying plants. We'll find 'em there.” Her grass-type gave a slow nod, turning to inspect the water that stretched out before them. Skrelp hid in rotten kelp. Kelp grew in salt water... The Ranger bowed down, sticking a finger into the water before bringing it to her nose. Yep. Salt.[break][break]

Skrelp were here.[break][break]

She snagged one of her empty Safari Balls, focusing on the dead patches of kelp that floated to the surface of the shallow pond...and her eyes were able to discern movement. Without a verbal command, the girl pointed out a bizarre shape that was blending into its surroundings. Her Bulbasaur nodded and deployed his vine whips, raising the two vines before crashing them down into the water, catching the hiding pokemon by surprise.[break][break]

And, without hesitation, Jenna scooped up her bulbasaur and flanked the side of the pond as the small poison-type released a frenzied series of dragon pulse–one attack after another was deployed by the Skrelp, who feared for its life.[break][break]

When it emerged from the water, trying to take better aim, the Ranger chucked her Safari Ball.

The Skrelp was captured. Jenna had to wade into the pond, not caring if her boots were soaked, as she grasped the floating Safari Ball. “Well. That was my main objective...” Everything else was a bonus. She glanced back to Sawyer, her Bulbasaur, and flashed him a thumbs up to confirm that the battle had ended.[break][break]

They should get moving, before they could encounter any distractions–[break][break]

Jenna felt her head twist, following the flash of red that had been seen in her peripheral. “Oh shit.” She knew what that was. “Sawyer–!” The Ranger tried to call out to her grass-type to warn him what was coming, but the Hawlucha had already initiated the battle. The wrestling bird lunged, quickly chasing down her Bulbasaur and grabbing onto him with both hands. Sawyer's stubby legs were too slow to outrace the aggressive bird.[break][break]

“Sleep Power!” The Ranger shouted, knowing that Sawyer wouldn't be able to escape from the bird's grasp. The next moment, the bird sprang up into the air. The Hawlucha was going to fucking barista bomb her grass-type. Jenna felt both of her hands press against her mouth as she watched, wondering if her tactic would work.[break][break]

When Sawyer realized that squirming would not be enough, he parted his leaves to expose his growing bud. It caused the small, adolescent flower to release its spores; sleep powder. The Hawlucha was blasted; choking on a face-full of the powder as it released the Bulbasaur mid-jump, unable to fully implement its attack.[break][break]

Jenna had to rush to catch her grass-type as their foe succumbed to the effects of the sleep powder.[break][break]

The Hawlucha fell straight to the ground, lured to a deep slumber that was undisturbed by its rough landing. The Ranger already had her second Safari Ball at the ready. With one hard throw, she threw the second capsule, watching the aggressive bird be engulfed by the red light.

The capture was successful.[break][break]

The young Ranger sighed in relief as she returned her Bulbasaur back to his capsule. That fight had been nerve-racking–her poor grass-type had nearly been annihilated by that wrestling maniac. “Sheesh.” Jenna said in relief as she braced both hands against her knees. That had been a close one. If the sleep power had failed, she knew she would have been running straight for the nearest Pokemon Center.[break][break]

After taking a moment to appreciate her luck, the young Ranger retrieved the newest member of her team. Two Safari Balls spent. That meant there was only one left. What to use it on? Jenna felt indecisive as she wandered away from the scene of her last battle.[break][break]

From the shadows of the surrounding trees, something was watching. The girl was oblivious to its presence... until a shadowy hand poked at her shoulder. The girl twisted her head, coming face to face with a golden mask. Another ghost-type had snuck up on her. The Ranger gave a small jump, recognizing the Yamask by its crying face as it clutched the small mask with its... tail? Was that a tail?[break][break]

She backed up, watching the depressed pokemon prepare for battle. Her hand snapped down to her waist, avoiding Sawyer's pokeball–he had experienced enough excitement for one day.[break][break]

Morrigan was released once more. The Braixen seemed surprised; this was the most she had interacted with Jenna. “Bear with me.” The fire-type shrugged with her newly formed shoulders. “You know what to do.” The fox seemed to approve of the Ranger's hands-off approach to battling. It was far better than what Morrigan had expected. Weren't trainers supposed to bark out orders and act like they knew everything? Weren't they supposed to expect complete obedience?[break][break]

The Braixen supposed she was lucky–but, she'd have to spend more time with the bun-headed Ranger before she could come to her own conclusions.[break][break]

The Yamask used curse. A purple haze surrounded the Ghost before a nail materialized; driven into the flesh of the pokemon as it sacrificed its own health. The same purple haze shrouded Morrigan, making her choke on the haze. “Shit.” Jenna murmured, wondering if she would have to step in...[break][break]

Morrigan used Flame Charge, ignoring the pain that seared into her throat as she charged down the ghost with her body ablaze. She had retrieved the stick from her tail, bludgeoning the Yamask with a fiery swing that struck with enough strength to render the ghost unconscious–[break][break]

And she was engulfed by the light of evolution once again. In the course of a single day, she had changed from one form to another... but it felt as if this had been a long time coming. All of her potential was unleashed. This time, Jenna was choking on her words as her newly formed Delphox emerged.[break][break]

The svelte fox approached her dumbfounded trainer, a clawed hand extended. Morrigan was taller. She was tall and slim by Delphox standards. That allowed her to rest her hand atop Jenna's head, rustling her blue hair. Maybe the Ranger wouldn't be so bad. Maybe they could be partners. The Delphox would never submit to a Trainer that tried to demean her, but this one... seemed different.

Jenna and Morrigan walked, side by side, as they continued through the Safari Zone. They were conversing–the Delphox was unable to speak, but listened as Jenna talked to fill the silence. The topics were mundane, but pokemon and trainer both paid attention to what the other was doing. Every gesture, every small comment, seemed to interest them. This was a chance for them to know one another.[break][break]

The Ranger tucked her hands back into her pockets, realizing that Morrigan could have been a very difficult pokemon to please had Jenna been an average trainer. “You want to take a break? I imagine those two evolutions were taxing.” It was an innocent suggestion. Morrigan gave a small shake of the head, eyeing her pokeball with distrust as Jenna extended it towards the fox.[break][break]

Jenna lowered the hand. “Hey, don't worry about it. I wouldn't force you. I promise.” Some trainers used pokeballs as a means of discipline. If a pokemon was out of line, some trainers would subject them to the solitude of their pokeball. “If you want to tag along, we better pick up the pace. I'm being timed.” The pokeball was returned to her waist as the Ranger transitioned to a brisker pace.[break][break]

The air was crisp. For some reason, the temperature seemed to drop. Jenna ignored the chill, sensing what she was going to encounter.[break][break]

A Cubchoo appeared, wiping its dripping nose with a paw as it eyed Jenna and her pokemon. Morrigan seemed ready to jump into action, but Jenna held up a hand to hold her back. “Don't worry about it. I got another idea.” The fox quirked a brow. “I just...want to try something out. You're not the only newbie I brought along.” Another pokeball was retrieved from Jenna's belt as Morrigan scoffed; a beginner? Yeah, right.[break][break]

The Ranger deployed the capsule, releasing the Lillipup that had been stored inside. Bonnie bounded from the pokeball, tongue lolling and tail wagging. The innocent pup immediately looked to the Ranger for guidance, not reacting to the Ice-Type pokemon that was preparing itself for battle. Bonnie was a simple dog. She wanted to follow commands, get a good belly rub, and enjoy a few snacks whenever possible. A perfect pokemon for someone new to raising them.[break][break]

“Giga Impact,” and a very strong pokemon, too.[break][break]

With a sudden burst of strength, the Lillipup charged down the Ice-Type and jumped. With both front paws raised, the small normal-type cleaved them down as if they were axes. The moment they struck contact with the ice bear, it smashed it down to the ground and made the ground quake. It caved under the force of the strike, leaving the Cubchoo in a crater, defeated and unable to continue.[break][break]

“See? Nothing to worry about–Are you shitting me?” Jenna watched as Bonnie began to evolve. What the fuck was happening? A Herdier bounded toward Jenna, who could only stare dumbfounded. “...Three. Three evolutions. Okay...?” As Bonnie licked her face, Jenna could only stare off into the distance, wondering what the hell was going on.

This was crazy.[break][break]

After Jenna regained her sensed and dolled out love for the newly evolved Herdier, she rose up from her knees and resumed her wandering. Bonnie and Morrigan were attempting to familiarize themselves with each other; the Herdier continued to sniff at the Delphox's flowing coat. The Ranger knew they would be polar opposites of one another, but maybe that would help them get along? Sometimes, differences could help bring people together.[break][break]

“We only got one capsule left, so I guess I shouldn't worry about time...” Skrelp had been her first choice. The other pokemon on the roster were bonuses. The Ranger could think of one or two options that would pique her interest, but if she left here with an extra capsule, she supposed it wouldn't be the end of the world.[break][break]

She couldn't be successful every time she came here– “Oh. A Karrablast.” Never mind. That was what she wanted.[break][break]

The tiny, grumpy insect was resting on a nearby tree branch. Its expression was contorted in frustration as its tiny legs struggled to climb down the branch without falling. Its efforts were futile. Its body was too plump and round to properly climb and the blue-shelled insect slipped, plummeting down to the cold, hard ground.[break][break]

Except Jenna was right there, palms raised, to catch the tiny insect before it could hurt itself. The Karrablast fell into her arms, far heavier than the Ranger had originally anticipated. “Oof! Got you!” The bug-type was ready to struggle against her, but seemed to sense that she was merely there to help...[break][break]

So it roughly shoved her away and dropped down to the ground, tiny limps trying to brush off the dirt. It was better than a face full of acid. “You're welcome.” Jenna offered as she raised a hand, keeping her pokemon from striking against the Bug-type for its rudeness.[break][break]

The grumpy bug only scoffed, crossing its arms over its chest as it tried to ignore her. “What were you doing, anyway?” Jenna raised a hand to shield her eyes as she looked up the tree it had been trying to climb; a plump berry rested on a high branch. “Is that what you wanted?” The bug-type tried to ignore her, but she could tell by the way it glanced away from the tree that her guess had been correct.[break][break]

Poor thing must have climbed up too high before realizing it couldn't reach it.[break][break]

“I can help you up.” That seemed to attract the Karrablast's attention. It tried to remain gruff and dismiss her offer, but the grumble of its stomach betrayed its hunger. Jenna could only smile knowingly as she dropped down to one knee, hands open for the bug.[break][break]

It gave in. The Karrablast hesitantly stepped forward, wary of her intentions. Its glare screamed that she'd better not try anything. “Yeah, yeah. I get it.” She hoisted the bug up from the ground, holding it above her head. With the added height, the Karrablast managed to grasp the plump berry with its tiny stubs. It eagerly chomped into the fruit, betraying a moment of joy as it enjoyed the lunch it had craved.[break][break]

Jenna set the bug back to the ground, her hand inching toward the safari ball on her waist. Should she? The Karrablast seemed to recognize what she wanted and... shrugged. It didn't care?[break][break]

She dropped the capsule atop the bug, watching as a red light engulfed it and its lunch.
