There was free coffee.[break][break]

At an indiscernible rest stop along Route 35, Jenna Wright tried to rub the exhaustion from her eyes. Dusk had just broken. In the distance, the sun was slowly rising into view, chasing away the dark skies. Her hands were kept warm by the small paper cup that had been handed to her; the steam from the coffee rising to greet her senses with its earthy aroma. Volunteers were moving between the wooden picnic tables, tending to the needs of wary trainers that had arisen to greet the new day.[break][break]

Tents were scattered by the side of the road, packed close to the only semblance of civilization. Jenna paid the tired trainers no mind as she sipped her coffee, trying to not burn herself as the hot contents met her lips. It was stout and black. While some would have recoiled at the overpowering, almost-burnt taste, Jenna lazily sipped and paid it no mind. It was liquid energy. She could tolerate the bad taste...[break][break]

Besides, it was free.[break][break]

“Anything for breakfast, honey?” A friendly woman asked with an apron tied to her waist. Jenna gave a polite shake of the head as she swallowed the last of the dark sludge. The aftertaste lingered with the sting of battery acid. “I can get you a refill if you want.” Despite the taste, the young Ranger wordlessly agreed and passed her cup to the volunteer. “Just sit there for one minute and I'll be right back. I didn't think we'd be so busy this morning.”[break][break]

Jenna nodded, cheek pressed against her hand, as she awaited her next dose of caffeine. Her eyes scanned the crowd of exhausted faces. The volunteer was right. More people were arriving. Seats were becoming scarce; but, one seat remained. It was situated at the very same table Jenna had chosen to occupy.[break][break]
