" Bro, she's a goddamn Ranger. She can take care of herself, y'know? I'm sure she knows how to tie all kinds of knots in ropes, Uh... Start a campfire, hmm... Filter some clean drinking water... Y'know, Ranger shit. Why you bein' such a kill buzz? Your bad vibe is killin' my mel-..." " Pika! Piiika! Piiika!" Pikachu waves at the approaching Jenna, the charming little mouse leaping from the shoulder of Chancelor and running over to the feet of the Ranger before leaping up to her shoulder in a single bound. He wastes no time and begins snuggling with the blue haired female—showing a genuine like for the girl and always enjoying her company when she was around. " And how's my favorite Ranger doin', huh?" Chancelor greets the female with a big grin of his own, butt planted on a rock with a traveling-backpack leaning against the jagged side of it. " It ain't too late to reconsider exploring this mountain, y'know? I heard the beach was poppin' this time of year." If I can't evade my fate
[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] One foot after the other, Jenna hiked up the steep incline of the slope that laid before her. The summer weather was sweltering, but with every step, the Ranger told herself that it would get easier. Mt. Suribachi was a place she was familiar with. In her Ranger training, it was where she had been taught how to properly hike and climb. She had plenty of memories of chugging bottles of water, suffering alongside fellow trainees, as they prayed for the day to end.[break][break] Mounting the top of the incline felt nostalgic. Donned in her leather-clad hiking boots, the girl was dressed and ready for anything this place could throw at her; there was just one thing missing. A partner. Hiking through this dense terrain could be dangerous if someone was alone. If they had a friend, they could have someone look for help if something went amiss.[break][break] That was why she had asked Chance if he was interested in coming along.[break][break] “Mornin!” She called out by the edge she had just overcome, seeing the fighter and his pikachu already waiting for her. “Sorry, sorry. I know I'm late.” The Ranger picked up the pace as she approached, smiling as Chancelor's pikachu came charging and easily hopped atop her shoulder. “Hey, bud. How are you doing? Giving your trainer plenty of trouble?” That was followed by a scratch as she skirted her fingers into his thick yellow fur–the little troublemaker was too cute to refuse.[break][break] Nuzzled up with the electric mouse, she spared a smile at Chancelor's hesitance. “We already came up all this way. You want to turn around and head all the way back? Getting down is worse than getting up,” and she knew that from experience. “I'm sure everything will be just fine. I mean, what's the worse that could happen?” As if knowing she was close to jinxing them, she was quick to add, "I got cell service up here. Just in case."[break][break] Snapping off one of the pokeballs from her belt, Jenna released Lapis from her ball. The Lapras quickly formed from the red light, taking up much of the room on the path. The sea-fairing creature did not seem comfortable on the hot rocks, but this was only temporary. "Chance, meet Lapis. I wanted to bring her up here today. She's... well..." The Lapras hid her face behind Jenna. It was always so nice to see Jenna, y'know? She always had a smile on her face and took her Ranger duty very seriously. Her conviction to her ' profession' was very awe-inspiring—the youngest McQueen loved surrounding himself around people he could relate too. When she returns the greeting to both himself and Pikachu, the teenager can't help but swell with a sense of pride and admiration for the bluenette—bravado like Jenna's was rare. " No. No. No. I'm always down to clown, y'know?" He nonchalantly sits back down upon the rock, hands dangling between his legs as hazel eyes drift towards the dark maw of a entrance. " This mountain ain't been the same since the migration is all i'm sayin'. We'll be aight, tho. I mean we got me, the best Martial-Artist in the region and you, the most resourceful Ranger in the region." He grins at the girl, eyes shifting from the dark entrance upon the Pikachu lovingly nuzzling her. " You can tell by the face he is always bein' a pain in my dick." Chancelor speaks up on previous words casually, Pikachu retorting by sticking out his tongue and stretching his very chubby face. Getting up from the rock yet again, the Martial-Artist bends down to fetch his backpack to begin their descent into the metaphorical belly of the beast. However, coming back up, he'd set wide eyes upon what appeared to be an extremely shy and timid Lapris—the poor girl trying her best to hide her much bigger head behind the back of her newfound partner. " You've been busy, huh, Jenna?" Pikachu peeks over the shoulder of the Ranger and attempts to comfort the shy girl with sweet PokéTalk and very kind words. " Lapis is a fine name. I'm sure she'll get use to me, y'know?" Chance would then open himself up wide, arms being spread with his chest sticking out. " The ladies love me after all. Ain't that right, Bro?" He was referring to the Pikachu, and, Pikachu; being the little asshole that he was, frantically shakes his head no. Squinted eyes are fixed on the electric mouse— akin to how a mother would do her child if they were in public acting up. Then, suddenly, from the entrance came running out a Ryhorn; stampeding as if something frightened it from within. " I got someone for you to meet too, Jenna." The youngest McQueen says, summoning his rather laid back and nonchalant Chespin. The Spiky Nut Pokémon waved at the Ranger, a vine from his headpiece slowly feeding him delicious and salty walnuts. " We'll take care of this Ryhorn. Maybe your girl will loosen up after she sees us in action, yeah?" Casually and with no real motivation, Chespin strolls forward and walks directly in the path of the rampaging Rhyhorn. The rocky bull charges at the casual Grass type, only to find itself being snarled and tripped by two tendrils from the green headpiece of the Chespin. " That's it. Just like we practiced!" Chance booms, standing back and allowing the newly obtained Grass type to put all his training to work. The toppled bull attempts to pick itself up, but is bombarded with well placed and timed vine whips. However, after awhile of this treatment, the rock monster finds newfound strength and muscles through the bombardment of whips. It recklessly charges again with another Horn Attack. Chespin stands in place and begins to glow a green color, slowly becoming enveloped in light as his form began to morph before their very eyes. " I knew you were close to evolving, but damn, M'boy!" Quilladin now stood in the wake of Chespin, an armored Pokémon ready to take this horn attack head on. A protected arm grew green spikes and a fist was thrown forward from the Quilladin, a fist that slammed into the Ryhorn and made it topple over with immense force. Before the wounded bull could raise back up, another Needle Arm slammed into the wild Pokémon to finish it off. Chancelor had a huge grin on his face, happy to see the fruits of their labor finally paying off. " This is Trick. He came with the name, by the way. A Wild Pokémon that names himself, now ain't that some shit?" Quilladin glances over at Chancelor, an arm digging into armor to pull out a handful of walnuts. One by one they are popped into the brawling shield's mouth. Then, out came the Pokémon that probably startled the Rhyhorn, a rather mean looking Geodude. " You think Lapis can handle this one?" As the Ranger stroked the water-type, she knew it would take time; her Lapras had been through a lot. She was still nervous around humans. It was a problem that she hoped they could overcome; but, Jenna knew it wouldn't be resolved immediately. Maybe the Lapras would always be shy, but maybe there would come a time where she could gain more confidence in herself. “You can say hello when you feel more comfortable, okay?” She spoke to Lapis as if she were a small child hiding behind their parent's leg.[break][break] The water type nodded, letting Jenna cup her face. “Just take your time.” No pressure. That was the most important thing. Pikachu had far better luck. The Lapras listened to what the small mouse had to say, nodding every few intervals in agreement... even if it seemed perplexed at some of the phrases it may have used. The poor water-type still felt displaced. She had spent most of her life isolated to one pond. Her social skills needed some work.[break][break] Jenna diverted her gaze away from Chancelor, towards the mouth of the cave, as the Ryhorn came charging out. The wild pokemon had to show up eventually. The ranger braced her hand to her Lapras' neck, just to keep her from panicking–and couldn't help but laugh when she met the newest member of Chance's team. “You went to the Safari, too? I got one of my own.” Wasn't that a coincidence. “I'm not letting him out, though. Today is her day to shine.”[break][break] She brought Lapis here to train her. The Ranger had done this deliberately, hoping that winning a few battles and meeting new people would ease her pokemon's anxieties.[break][break] Lapis, who was flustered by the attention, tried to hide her face behind a flipper–but she couldn't hide for long.[break][break] Jenna focused on the battle unfolding, watching as the Chespin cleverly used the vines to trip his opponent. That was a good tactic, she'd have to remember that the next time she started training with Coulter. She had always been a hands-off trainer; the girl had been blessed with some pokemon that were familiar with combat. They did not need much guidance, or if they did, the girl wasn't always sure what to say. She was no expert at battle strategies. She was learning as she went, picking up tricks of the trade by watching others.[break][break] For Lapis, her approach had to change. She had to be there every step of the way.[break][break] “Oh! Congrats!” The girl replied as the Ryhorn was defeated and his Chespin was engulfed in white light; but, she didn't have the chance to congratulate Chance properly. Another pokemon had made an appearance–one that begging for a fight. The Geodude beat its fist into its other hand, looking to serve out some punishment.[break][break] Lapis could have fainted on the spot if Jenna hadn't kept a hand against her. “Yeah. I know she can.”[break][break] “Water Gun.” She ordered, not bothering to glance back at the water-type as she stepped forward. She had given the Lapras her vote of confidence. The Ranger couldn't hold her hand for what was coming next, even if she wanted to. After a moment of hesitation, Lapis unleashed the attack–though the length of the attack was not as long as it should have been. Her attacks were fluctuating under pressure.[break][break] The geodude easily swept around the attack, retaliating by clutching the nearest rock and chucking it in her direction.[break][break] She knew what Lapis was getting ready to do. “No. Don't.” The Lapras was gearing to try and dodge. “You won't be fast enough. Water Gun. Come on. Show 'em.”[break][break] The second blast of water was better than the first, but it was focused on the attack. The high pressure of the water was enough to split it – two halves divided, falling to either side of the pokemon. Even if the water gun had been performed poorly, it had enough force to do that. “There we go.” Baby steps. Lapis looked surprised with herself.[break][break] The geodude wasn't done with its assault, tucking both arms close to its body as it initiated its next move: rollout. “Alright, third time's the charm.” The geodude charged and Lapis unleashed her third attack. This time, it hit. The geodude kept spinning and spinning, trying to push itself through the blast of water that it met dead on. It was a commendable effort, but ultimately, it subjected itself to far more damage than it should have.[break][break] Lapis powered down her attack, panting from the overuse, to see an unconscious geodude in her wake. “Told yah,” and Jenna came the creature a heavy pat on the shell. It was always a treat to see more more ' inexperienced' Pokémon battle—it made gaining that experience and skill that much more inspiring in the end. The Ranger's Lapras may have been a timid beast that wasn't entirely sure or the area in which she was in, but she trusted Jenna enough to leap into battle and try her best; seeing a Pokémon willing to battle for their partner was always a good sign and showed a bond between human and beast. She took out the Geodude primarily due to type advantage, but a win was a win; especially when it came to morale and the Pokémon having faith in their ability. Both Pikachu and Quilladin began to give praise to the timid girl—Pikachu being a natural at cheering on others while Quilladin merely followed the mouses lead. " She took our lead and preformed flawlessly. Winning the battle is a simple feat, but winning the war is a long endeavor that'll take time, teamwork, and patience. I think the big girl took the first most important step in winning that war, don't you?" Hazel eyes leveling upon Jenna, a big smile from cheek to cheek. Suddenly, an Onix slithered out of the maw of the cavern, Quilladin almost instantly sprung into action; claiming this gigantic Pokémon as his next fight. " Like Venomoths to a flame, huh? Aight', Boss. This one is yours. Put that new armor of yours to the test." Quilladin, like the newly discovered Juggernaut that he was, charged at the giant rock titan like a football player blitzing the defensively line. The huge Pokémon picked up its rocky tail and swung in at the much smaller Grass type—attempting to flick Quilladin away like he was some kind of buzzing nuance in the ear. " I found Trick in the Safari Zone, yeah. My first visit, too. We were actually seeing if the Pokémon within could handle themselves in a proper battle, y'know? Being locked up behind walls tend to 'soften' Pokémon, but not those guys. Some put up a fight and Trick here was among the few that did. Honestly, I think he was released and somehow found his way in the preservation. He is almost too well trained despite being a 'Wild' Pokémon." Chancelor beings to explain to Jenna as the armored brawler stops the swinging tail with another Needle Arm—a punch that made the mighty Onix reel back in pain. Quilladin begins to then mount the beast, using green tendrils from his arm to allow himself to remain on the beast even as it bucked and wiggled. Reaching the top of the head after a rather long and daunting climb, Quilladin show gloats by flexing his new muscles. It felt good to win, even if the Lapras knew it was because of the type difference. Battling was never something she imagined being good at... but it felt good to know that she had lived up to Jenna's expectations.[break][break] “Just gotta keep fighting. She'll win. Eventually.” Jenna replied to Chance, sporting a smile that was unusually enthused. The ranger, while prone to sparing a smile or two, had never beamed at the male trainer like she had just done. She was more reserved. Her expressions were never suppressed, but maybe the smile wouldn't always reach her eyes. This time, there was no such nonsense. She was genuinely proud of her water-type and her success. “Let's keep the trend going,” while there was still energy and momentum.[break][break] They didn't have to wait long for the next batch of pokemon to appear.[break][break] The onyx came first –and Jenna was relieved when the Quilladin claimed that as its next adversary. The size difference between the rock snake and her Lapras may have been too intimidating for her to overcome... but when another pokemon made itself known, Jenna jumped at the chance.[break][break] A phanpy had wandered into their line of sight. It did not come from the mouth of the cave, but instead came from up the very incline that Jenna had traversed earlier. “Okay girl, I got something a little more complex for you to try.” While the ranger was not familiar with the small ground-type, she was aware of their iconic move.[break][break] Lapis leaned her head down and listened to her trainer as she whispered her directions. Maybe she seemed nervous at the directions, wondering if she could follow everything that Jenna had said, but the Ranger gave her a firm pat for reassurance. “You did great last time. You just have to learn to trust yourself.” Easier said than done.[break][break] The phanpy had initiated the battle with rollout, just as Jenna had predicted. They were notorious for it.[break][break] She had picked up a few ideas after watching Chance. “Wait... wait...” She ordered with a raised hand, watching the blue pokemon speed closer and closer. “Now!” And she swung her hand forward. At her command, Lapis unleashed her prepared attack: ice shard.[break][break] And one large shard of ice was implanted into the ground, right in the way of the Phanpy. It crashed through the obstacle, but its trajectory was changed. Instead of crashing into Lapras, it rolled past the two of them. “Okay. Thicker ice next time.” If it had been a bigger pokemon, that would have been useless. “But it was a good first try.”[break][break] When the phanpy recovered and tried the same attack, they used the same tactic; again and again.[break][break] It was only when the ground type flopped over, exhausted and no longer able to continue, that Jenna realized they might have been excessive with their practicing. During that time, Jenna had been watching Chance's battle unfold, noting that he didn't have to do much hand-holding with his newest addition.[break][break] “I wouldn't be surprised.” She said, crossing her arms behind her head. “Seems like it'd be something that could happen. Pikachu jumped off the shoulder of Jenna and quickly made his way over to the side of Quilladin. The armored Grass type had been checking the newly obtained armored—fists knocking on the hollow yet extremely sturdy shell he wore. Pikachu who stood directly beside Quilladin began joining in on the ' testing'—slowly knocking on the armor with the joint of the fingers. Quilladin grinned at the cunning mouse, suddenly flexing bulging arm muscles to show that he had grown that much stronger. Pikachu scoffs at the display and joins in on the flexing—flabby arms wiggling a little behind maintained and trimmed fur. The Grass type laughs openly at the ' whimpy' display, now flexing both arms like he was attempting to win the worlds strongest Pokémon tournament. Pikachu, not really one to keen on being made a fool, attempted to push the armored Pokémon over, but Quilladin didn't move a single inch and taunted the adorable mouse more. While the two did what they did, their Trainer had his attention on the Ranger and her extremely shy Pokémon. " I can already see the improvement. She is really hesitant in her attacks and that hesitation reflects the outcome of her attacks. Though her execution is near perfect, but execution and confidence go hand and hand." The Fighter briefly explains, wanting to talk to the big shy girl, but opting to give the timid beast the space she needed. " Your patience will go a long way with her, even more than battling." As he says this, eyes fix back to the dark maw of an entrance, a Whooper waddling out with a frightful look on the face. Quilladin, holding Pikachu back with a hand on the head catches the Whooper fleeing from something and springs into action—armored hands slamming into one another to show he craved further battle. " People and Pokémon are no different in that regard, Jenna. People just don't like having to put in that lil' extra work to see the good in another, y'know? Life is too short so why bother? Why deal with extra baggage when you got heavy bags on your own?" Chance attempts to play devils advocate while Quilladin makes easy work of the Whooper. " But when you find that one diamond in the rough, it makes it all worth it, y'know?" Eyes going back over to Quilladin who is now standing over the toppled Whooper, flexing while looking at Lapis. In the midst of all this, Pikachu jumps on the head of Quilladin and manages to take him down. If I can't evade my fate
[attr="class","therivmid"] [attr="class","therivmid1"] Jenna couldn't resist the urge to smile at the antics of Quilladin and Pikachu–they were picking on one another just as siblings would. It'd take time for her team to meld together as closely as Chance's team was. Right now, they were still unfamiliar with one another, trying to adapt. If the Ranger brought our her entire team, she knew it'd be awkward. Her team was still a ragtag band. Some were assertive and some were not. They conflicted. One-on-one, Jenna knew what she was dealing with... all together was something she kept in low moderation.[break][break] The Ranger glanced over as Chance made his approach, nodding at his advice; he was one of the most experienced trainers she had known. Anything he had to say, she'd take into consideration. “I think once I nail down a strategy with her, that'll give her that extra boost. She'll know her role. It'll give her something to focus on when she's nervous.” As a duel-type pokemon, her move versatility was something to be admired. In the right hands, Jenna knew that she could be an adaptable pokemon that could be wedged into most situations –it was just difficult to visualize it. Jenna hoped that with time–and experience–the answer would come to her.[break][break] In the background, she could see Quilladin boasting his latest victory. Chancelor's next words seemed to strike a cord; something resonated in her gaze, even if it was focused on his pokemon.[break][break] “I guess I never minded the extra baggage–” The girl said, slowly. One hand opened and clenched. “–Just wanted what was best. Even if it wasn't easy on me. Life's never easy on anybody. Nobody can keep shrugging it off. It'll get to you, eventually.” There was something in her voice that reached deep. Those were words spoken from experience. Her voice finds a strength as it continues, even if her tone remains the same. “Someone's gotta carry that weight,” and her gaze lost focus on Pikachu and Quilladin; it had hardened into something uncharacteristic of the soft-faced woman.[break][break] Lapis set her head down on Jenna's shoulder; knowing the meaning of the expression. The Lapras had been her only confidant.[break][break] But the Ranger snapped out of it, brushing a hand against the Lapras' snout. Her face calmed. “Oh, hush.” Even if no words were spoken by Lapis, Jenna knew what was being expressed. “We're not done yet, so keep your eyes peeled. You've been doing great so far.”[break][break] A numel had wandered into the middle of the road, having taken the same path as the phanpy had done. Without ushering a command, Jenna gestured with a flick of the hand for Lapis to go ahead. “One water gun should do it.” Lapis seemed to doubt it; but, she relented and released the attack anyway.[break][break] This time, the beam of pressured water cut straight through the air. It had been the cleanest shot she had used all day. The moment it made contact with the numel, it struck with momentous force. The weaknesses that the numel had to water were insurmountable and the pokemon was rendered unconscious from it; the level difference had not helped, either.[break][break] “When you do things the hard way–and you build up all that pressure–that's when you get diamonds, right? I want my team to learn something from that lesson. Sometimes, the hard way ends up being the right way.” Those were words spoken from someone that had never envisioned themselves as a trainer. Jenna shifted her weight, looking back towards Chance and the mouth of the cave. That would be their next objective–[break][break] But Lapis did something unexpected. As the battle ended, Jenna saw a rare moment of joy from the blue creature. She scooted back to them and... she extended out her neck, letting her face reside close to Chance as if giving him the permission to touch. That last victory had finally let her muster up the nerve to make an introduction, even if she seemed startled by her own abruptness. It was the same as someone running up to you, bowing without any hesitation, and rambling out an introduction from how nervous they were. Even Jenna couldn't help but laugh. "That's rather blunt of you, isn't it?"
