“A legendary experience?” Jenna asked aloud as she directed her flashlight, trying to use the beam to comb through the maze of stalactites to see if anything was trying to hide from them. “That doesn't sound good.” What had Chancelor encountered down here to make him think Blaziken was a joke? She drew her lips into a thin line, wondering if it had been a wise idea to continue this adventure. Lapras had improved through those battles outside, but she was still inexperienced. If something serious happened, the Ranger didn't want Lapis around to deal with it. She had to give her more time to grow and get comfortable...[break][break]

Or maybe the Ranger was babying her by thinking like that? Jenna paused at that thought, caught at a strange crossroad. Maybe she would have to make that decision at some point in the future? She just hoped it wasn't going to happen today.[break][break]

She hadn't been expecting the Murkrow to lung out from one of the distant shadows. Startled, Jenna accidentally dropped the flashlight from her hands when she jumped back; it clattered against the ground, rolling away from them. “Sorry!” As Quilladin blocked the downward sweep of the flying crow, Jenna tried to chase after the flashlight before it could roll down a nearby passage. She wasn't going to lose it. It was her best source of light... when Jenever wasn't around, of course.[break][break]

The girl picked up the flashlight, just as Trick chucked the obnoxious birds into a nearby stalagmite. She gave a flinch of sympathy, but her heart was still racing after that jump-scare it had caused her. “Yeah! I'm just peachyyyy–” Her note had dragged, realizing that her flashlight was illuminating something that was floating right in front of her. Something big and purple. She turned to face it, wondering what it could be– [break][break]

That was a ghost-type.[break][break]

Internally screaming, the Ranger dive-bombed to the side of the pokemon and shouted to Lapras in a voice that betrayed her surprise, “Ice Shard! Ice Shard!” Lapis was quick to respond; she had gotten plenty of practice outside of the cave and it had suddenly come in handy. The sea-fairing creature was able to quickly produce the frozen crystal formations and launch them towards the Drifblim.[break][break]

Jenna, on the other hand, hightailed it back to her Lapras and managed to narrowly avoid a Shadow Ball that had been shot in her direction. Couriers were fast. Jenna was no exception. “Again!” The Ranger commanded as she snaked behind the safety of her pokemon, unnerved by the ghost type.[break][break]

She didn't like ghosts. She really didn't like them. Ghost pokemon could be okay, in small doses... but here? In a dark tunnel? Jenna had no tolerance for that.[break][break]

The second ice attack struck with success, but the ghost type was still floating... and to Jenna, it almost seemed unfazed. “Shit.” It had gathered the energy for a second Shadow Ball; a move that she knew Lapras couldn't dodge. “We're gonna have to try out that new move of yours. Just brace for this. You'll be fine. You're tougher than you know.”[break][break]

When the Shadow Ball was released, it struck against the Lapras too quickly to be dodged. Lapis gritted her teeth and stood through the blast, dealing with the sting and the burn the strange energy had caused. “Alright. Now!” And Jenna raised her head and pointed towards the Drifblim.[break][break]

At first, it seemed like Lapras had decided to use water gun... but something was different. The powerful beam of water seemed too strong and as it radiated across the cave there was an overwhelming smell of salt–like the ocean was somewhere close by. Lapras used Brine.[break][break]

The weakened ghost-type, despite trying to act tough, took the full brunt of the attack and it seemed to deflate, floating helplessly back to the ground.[break][break]

Sheepishly, she looked back to Chancelor and rubbed the back of her neck. “Well, now I'm okay.”[break][break][break]

It took everything within the youngest McQueen to not bust out into mad laughter. Growing up with five older sisters and a bunch of other children that lived and frequented the Compound, the Rangers squeals told him one thing loud and clear—she haaaaated Ghost type Pokémon with an absolute passion. Trick the Quilladin indulged himself in salty walnuts while Pikachu joined Chancelor; his 'other-half' in the suppression of laughter—the cute mouse mounting the shoulder of the human while also holding a hand over his mouth. Jenna could undoubtedly hear them snickering behind her despite their failed efforts to hold back their giggling. Pikachu began hitting the head of Chancelor, signalling that the teenager was being way to loud with his snickering and needed to be more 'sly'; but that was a black ass pot calling the kettle even darker—Pikachu giggled just as loud if not louder. "She's learnin' a lot. Taking everything she has learned and adapting it into her own battle strategy. " The snickering boy was referring to Lapris who more or less acted on her own accord—using a new technique that came natural to her. "Every Pokémon and partner has their own strengths and weaknesses. It is your job to find them, mold them into greatness, and utilize those SQUEALS- i mean skills to reach great FRIGHTS- i mean heights."

Pikachu erupted into crazed laughter upon his human making two fatal mistakes in his word. Tears flowed freely from tear soaked eyes, the cute little creature hitting the face of Chancelor as the laughter just wasn't enough. That was until the ground began to tremble and something heavy, loud, and rolling out of control was heading in their direction, down the tunnel they stood within. Chancelor grabs Jenna's hand and pulls her off to the side, making both of them press up against the jagged cave wall. "Graveler territory, but it aint nothin' your girl shouldn't be able to handle." He says this as Trick the Quilladin gets soaked from the back; bombarded with rings of water that popped in his ears. He holds his heads while turning around to face where the sneak attack came from. There stood a slimy Gastrodon taunting the armored brawler. "Handle it before the Graveler comes, Boss." Trick leaps into action, a shield held directly in front of him as he plows through another wave of Water Pulses. Once within striking range, a Needle Arm is swung in the direction of the Gastrodon and slams heavily into it—one fist followed by three more for a four piece combo to put an end to the interfering Pokémon. Though, in the mighty strikes of Trick were too slow and the rolling Graveler already had the party in its sights. "You gotta' get it before it blows, Jenna! Go! Go! Go!" He rushes the girl, frantically tapping her shoulder before this Graveler brings down the entire tunnel with one mighty....

KABOOM!

The fury of sand was unexpected. It had dusted in from one of the tunnels, quickly enveloping the space where they had been standing. Jenna didn't get the chance to reward her Lapras for a job well done–another fight was ready to begin. The girl flanked by her pokemon's side, a hand pressed against her, as the sand roughly buffed against her water-type.[break][break]

The Ranger knew that the longer the sandstorm raged, the more and more damage it could cause Lapis. “Sorry, girl.” She muttered. “One last fight and we'll be done. I promise.” Her pokemon was breathing rapidly. Maybe all those fights had pushed her too hard? Her Lapras was not used to fighting like this. Jenna twisted her eyes from Lapras and towards Chance, nodding in agreement as she tried to shield herself. “You got anyone that can clean this up?” She had to yell above the sound of the howling winds.[break][break]

If he didn't, then they only had one option. They had to find the cause of the storm and knock 'em out... As two shapes approached from the shadows, her eyes glanced from Quilladin to Lapras. “I'll take the big guy. If I can't wrap this up, I might need some assistance.” If Trick could finish the smaller target, then he'd have an easier time transitioning to the larger one, in case Lapis struggled.[break][break]

When the smaller shadow charged, Trick met it head-on. The grass-type attacked, over and over, refusing to let his opponent flee so easily. At first, Jenna felt a sense of relief as the sand seemed to dissipate... but then the second figure made itself known, stampeding towards them with murderous furry–a Hippowdon. Chance's statement matched exactly what Jenna had been thinking.[break][break]

“Water Gun!” She shouted to Lapis, pushing against Chance as she jumped to the side of the raging pokemon. This was a serious fight. The Hippopotas must have been her offspring. If the Ranger knew anything about Hippowdons, it was that they were fiercely aggressive and territorial. The only way to calm its wrath would be through battle.[break][break]

Lapras released her attack, but unlike previous battles, it did little to stop the raging ground-type. It was then that Jenna noticed the spark –a shimmer and crackling of light that emitted from its parted maw.[break][break]

It was Thunder Fang. She hadn't anticipated that.[break][break]

When the attack connected, when the Hippowdon bit down upon Lapis' shell, her pokemon released a shriek that could have ripped Jenna's heart from her chest. “Lapis! You gotta use–!” It would be no use. Her pokemon had already retaliated with another burst of water, panicking and unable to listen to her trainer's commands.[break][break]

When battling, it was easy for a pokemon to listen to orders when they were winning; Lapis had never lost. She wasn't ready to focus through the pain and the Hippowdon was unrelenting–the electricity from its bite would only grow stronger and stronger as it funneled more energy into it. Each water gun seemed weaker than the next.[break][break]

Jenna knew there was only one option. As both pokemon continued to bombard each other with their weaknesses, Jenna knew that her Lapras was making her last stand to try and hold on... but the other pokemon was more experienced, more used to the pain that combat could cause.[break][break]

So the Ranger threw her pokeball, praying that by capturing the berserk mother, she could spare Lapis from being driven unconscious.[break][break]

The moment the ground-type was sucked into the ball, she rushed to Lapis' side to inspect her injuries. Both hands clasped onto her Lapras' face, making her look at her Trainer. “You'll be okay. You're okay,” Jenna repeated. “You did everything you could, okay?”[break][break][break]
